VOTING FOR YELLOW HOSTAS

(remember when we used to call these "gold?")

The Objective: to come up with a list of the best-of-the-best hostas by coloration and clump size. Blue Mouse Ears and Queen of the Seas are both fine hostas, but they don't serve the same functions in the garden, so we're going to generate a very useful list. Please encourage your friends to vote... the bigger the pool of voters, the better the results.

The Rules:

You can vote for ONE OR TWO hostas in each size category - don't agonize over the sizes - just give it your best shot... we can move things around a little as necessary. The goal is just to get at least one good vote from each person in any size category for which they have a favorite.

Size:

We all know sizes are tricky to nail down - we are basing our votes on the overall diameter of the hosta clump at maturity under typical gardening conditions. When a hosta is a contender but seems to straddle the categories, I will refer to Zilis and consult with folks - but ultimately I'm the decider! Just give me your favorites - we can sort things out later.

Here are your five categories... please list your votes by category:

Dwarf/Mini = equal to or smaller than 18" diameter

Small = larger than 18" and smaller than 28" diameter

Medium = larger than 28" and smaller than 48"

Large = larger than 48" and smaller than 66"

Extra Large = equal to or larger than 66"

If you frequent more than one hosta forum, please vote on only one of the sites.

I was going to give you a hard time about making me look up a lot more plants than you will vote for - but you are clearly giving this a lot of thought to come up with such a good list, so...

here goes... I agree with almost all your sizes...

S Curly Fries (check spelling)
S Designer Genes
S Dragon Tails
S Feather Boa
S Limey Lisa [I'm making a judgement call based on growing this a long time. Most folks grow this as a Dwarf/Mini... the clump expands, but when it does it is "loose"... so we'll put this in the D/M category)
S Marrakech (check spelling)
M Alabama Gold
M Amber Tiara
M August Moon
M Fire Island (in 5-6 years, mine has never developed the full adult leaves and seems to want to stay in the small range... but MEDIUM is the common listing so we'll go with that)
M Jaz
M Little Aurora (I know it is supposed to be MEDIUM... but I had to wait an awful long time before mine get into even the small range... so slow, and seems so happy at 18", but officially MEDIUM.)
M Maui Buttercups (though this is small for most of us, with its heritage of Francis Williams and August Moon, we have to believe that this one will end up MEDIUM in our gardens...)
M Nancy (don't know enough about this one... people call it a small based on height, and the heritage is unknown, and all the pictures are of small plants... still, leaf size would suggest the possibility of staying in the SMALL or becoming MEDIUM. Call it either one if you want to vote for it...)
L Dancing Queen (its listed as LARGE, and we'll go with that... but I've never seen one bigger than medium... the registration and tc were done long before Kent ever grew it to a mature garden clump... so I think the size is a guess and we might change this to medium eventually...)
L Daybreak
L Diva
L Piedmont Gold
XL Choo Choo Train
L Krugerrand (this one gets large - but I can't find any record so far of it getting over about 5' in diameter, so we're keeping it in the LARGE category for now)
XL Sun Power (ironic name - mine burns up every year by midsummer due to a few hours of midday sun... much prefer Paradise Power - SP with a greeen margin - and given time, it does get into the XL category...

thanks for the votes, Irawon! I am going to have to move them around a little... Popo will certainly get mention in the final list... hard to put it in a color category... definitely blue green early in the season, so I believe we'll put it in blue... but it does usually green up pretty early. I have the same problem with Cutting Edge... Teaspoon, because it is so cute when its small, has gotten a reputation as a mini - but if you just plant it and grow it for a few years like any other hosta clump, it will actually become a medium sized clump of small leaves... Zilis puts it in small... I put it in medium... we'll have to work that out later, but it clearly is a favorite for lots of folks... Candy Dish will be in the Medium category, Lakeside Looking Glass is too. Lakeside Black Satin - it's right on the margin of being large, but I believe it is typically medium in most garden situations... so we'll keep that one there...

evans, the circuit boards are built not to last. The circuit board went out on our Magic Chef gas slide-in range 3 years after we bought it and it was going to cost $1,000 for the circuit so we opted to just put the stove on the curb for trash and buy another. We bought the new Magic Chef, but this time purchased the extended warranty which is a very minimal amount of money. Within a couple of years the board went out and they replaced it free of charge. That was 10 years ago and the stove has worked fine ever since. In case you're wondering why we purchased a second Magic Chef, the reason is the price was much cheaper than the other brands that we could find in a slide in gas range. When I buy my new range for the new house I'm going to make sure to purchase the extended warranty for that one also. It will be a Jenn Air.

I've just discovered this thread and not a moment too soon (or late?). I can sooooo sympathsize. I'm also a stay at home mom former teacher debating the return to work. I have gotten totally jazzed reading all the great ideas and options. like you, I know htat my whole family would be miserable if I returned to work full-time. Right now I have a great set up subbing at my oldest dd's school. I have MIL babysit and when she can't I swap child care with a neighbor who works evenings. If you ever do feel the need to sub, find a nice girl's school with strict rules. My daughter's school is a dream to sub at. Small class sizes, the teachers always leave extensive plans and the girls actually respect the teachers (even subs). But as you said the pay sucks. It really only works out to be spending cash for me. So the ideas in the thread about future employment when my youngest starts school are real boosters. Good luck with that pet sitting. I am envious of your opportunity and the excitement that goes with something new and exciting - not to mention lucrative!

I know many people use clumping clay (sodium bentonite) litters with no problem but they do have some disadvantages. The clay is strip-mined. Strip mining is as the name implies. Heavy equipment strips off the top layer of earth to get to the seam of clay, which is often quite thin. Strip mining is an incredibly destructive process that has wiped out thousands upon thousands of acres of land and removed millions of tons of earth. The problem with these products is they produce a lot of dust (although some brands claim that the type of clay they use produces a dust-free product), which contains silicon particles that have been established by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a known human carcinogen. Clay particles tend to cling to your cat's fur and in-between their toes. In addition to leaving dusty cat prints on your floors, breathing these particles can cause respiratory infections. I tried several brand-name clumping litters when I got my cat and we both coughed and sneezed. Swheat Scoop was recommended to me by a customer at PetSmart and I gave it a try. It doesn't clump as firmly as the clay litters but it does clump and if you scoop gently it is easy to deal with. There is some dust but the dust is heavy enough that it doesn't fly up in the air. I have no odor in the room from the box if I scoop every day. And the best thing is the cat and I don't cough and sneeze any more.

Jim, I figure if I ask on a few, it will help others figuring the sizes. Besides you're retired so you have all day to look up sizes....lol.

Dwarf/Mini = Limey Lisa,
Small = Curly Fries, Marrakech
Medium = Maui Buttercups, Nancy
Large = Krugerrand, Diva
Extra Large = Choo Choo Train, Sun Power

Btw Jim - Maui Buttercups is about 33" in my garden and Nancy is 25" in 2nd year. Thanks for looking those up.

thanks for the quick responses, all! Still hoping for more votes as people get some time to think about this.

Somehow the yellows seem to get a lot of good entries ever year... so I know I'll have a hard time when it comes around time for me to vote... I sure like a lot of those mentioned so far!

and mocassin - don't think you got by with it - I caught that attempt to get an extra one in!

I am surprised that the hosta I consider the finest yellow addition in the past decade - maybe the best yellow large hosta ever - has not gotten one vote on this thread!

Again,it confusing to me, but trying to be a team player, I will try to remember to take a note-tab with me when I next go out and peruse the gardens during the nextr few days, should the preponderence of visiting relatives allow me the time, teehee.

First of all, Sun Power is in an entirely different class than all the other golds. By far and away the best.

Other very good ones are Daybreak (the brightest in my yard), Stardust, Key West, Sutter's Mill, Solar Flare. I tend to go for the large ones.

Golden Sculpture is very large and has a beautiful shape and leaf, but the color isn't gold enough to please me.

Medium: King Tut, Pharoah's Gold (one of Don Rawson's - if not legit in poll, substitute Aspen Gold)
Large: Dancing Queen, Fried Bananas

In doing this I'm thinking it might be interesting to hear why we left some out. For instance, I'm generally fond of Fire Island and have three in my garden where I have very few duplicates. But this year they're all slug eaten, so I can't bring myself to vote for it.

Also realizing that I generally have a lot more competition in the medium and large categories (for yellows, greens and blues) than the others. I won't vote for something I don't like in the other categories, but I may not like it as much as something in the more competitive categories.
