Fan on but computer off. Also no signal.

Left computer on last night, "no signal"today.

Re-booted several times, only get first normal black screen then solid black screen with curser in upper left corner.

Hard drive light goes on then turns off and stays off

With computer off now fan is on

Windows xp

A simple fix or into the shop?

Have you tried to start in safe mode do that. Also try disconnecting everything from power including the router and modem leave off five minutes then power up in this order, power to start modem let it fully light up, power to the router let it fully light up, then the PC.

Yes, definitely try Safe Mode. Last week I was uninstalling something from startup, and, as a result, Windows would not load. I started in Safe Mode (everything is verrrryy slow) and restored to a day earlier which undid my boo boo. Of course, you may have a greater problem, but it's certainly worth a try.

I bought my daughter a Dell Inspiron 1000(Win XP), when she started college. It is now about 3 1/2 years old. For the last several months-it has done this same thing. Usually after several tries-I get it to boot into Windows and I do a system restore-back to a date when it was working properly. It will then boot with no problems for a few weeks-then it will do the same thing again. I have taken it to a couple of different places to have it fixed. The first PC Tech replaced the LCD cable. It didn't fix the problem. The second PC Tech said he couldn't find any thing wrong with the laptop other than some settings-which he changed. The problem is still not fixed. So if anyone out here has any idea what could possibly fix this problem-I would be very grateful. I really hate to keep spending time and money and still have the same old problem-so now the laptop just sits most of the time, and she is using one of my desktops. I have been told that the problem might be the motherboard-but if this were the case-would it work after a system restore? All of my daughter's files are backed up-so should I try to reinstall everything to the way it was originally. Can I do this with the disks that came with the laptop? Thanks

I was able to flush the dns on both the xp and vista laptops. But I still can't connect either laptop wirelessly to the "fmaily room" network (which is still unsecured). I cannot access the Nat,spi or firewall soI don't know if that's the problem. Both laptops show a strong signal (full bars) to the family room network - but don't connect. They do connect via wired connection (does this mean I have so far created a network switch). On both laptops I selected "family room" as the preferred network to connect to. But both connected to my Lynn network (from the opposite corner of the house - with only a weak signal). On the Vista laptop it says Windows cannot connect to "family room" - and when asked to connect to family room, it said "Windows association failed due to an unknown reason." When I selected "diagnose and repair, it said Windows did not find any problems with your Internet connection." Then I tried one further thing. I saw on the Vista laptop that it still listed the family room network as having WPA2 security - so i changed what the laptop had for listed for family room network to reflect no current security settings. Then I tried to connect again. It wouldn't connect. Then I clicked repair/diagnose - and it said "this network is marked as a "hidden" network and is either not in the range of this computer or the wireless settings saved on this computer do not match the settings of the network." It is in range of the network - 3 feet away and receiving a full strong signal. So perhaps the network settings do not match the router or access point (although I'm not sure where to look to check this since I think I set it all up to match). The other thing is says is "if you own or set up this network, reset your wireless router or access point and try connecting again." Should I try this? Does it mean unplugging SMC access point, linksys router and modem - waiting and replugging them in? If so, in what order? Or does this mean resetting the SMC completely and starting from scratch? So now what? Jane - I realize that Mikie's the guy - and I very much appreciate his help. Those links helped me get clearer on definitions, but don't really get specific enough to address these set up complications. Thank you. Lynn.

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.

fwiw My experiences with the plug in usb WiFi adapters, they all seem to have much lower receive and send power than the internal types. They struggle with distance I think is their main problem for some uses. Here Im using a little tiny Trendnet/Realek usb mini adapter, sticks out maybe 1/2 inch. Has 100mw rx 200mw tx, with no antenna, and that's = very weak. It works flawlessly though in my use, even in full energy savings mode - I bought it to experiment with two channels and it matches my Trendnet wifi/dsl-modem/router, and only cost ten bucks delivered.. Actually it worked out so perfect for here that I use it full time as its weakness in send/receive signal is such that it doesn't see but just one neighbor, where as if I actuate my internal wifi it sees a dozen ssid's at any given moment . It is mostly line of sight here to the router here which I keep that router set at 12% transmit power to actually appreciate in my mind I have as fast as possible network speeds without bothering neighbors signals. My iverizon dsl 7.1mb is way under the 120 to 150mb windows says is available - so do I need it :) But if I were streaming to a tv or moving backup files around.. maybe 2 channels then would really be appreciated and actually useful. I don't think I've had a single dropout since I uninstalled the TrendNet install and let Microsoft automatically discover new hardware and install with their version of the realtek wifi driver. Windows has all the necessary built in programming for managing it.

I'm trying to understand what a cable/dsl modem would have to do with Ginny's problems?

Immediately after the BIOS splash screen start tapping the F8 key at about 1 second intervals. You should get the Windows advanced options menu. If Windows starts (or tries to start) just let the machine finish booting and then power down and try again. Sometimes it takes a couple of attempts.

I'd try safe mode first.

yes that is why I said try safe mode First and gave the LINK with full instructions . And the reason for the power cycle is this comment which we really don't know how to interpret now do we. "no signal"today
And it certainly won't HURT anything.

First thing to do in my opinion is to get the computer to shut off. Either hold the on/off button in for at least 4 seconds which should do it, or remove the power plug from the back of the tower.

Once it has ceased all activity then start it again and watch the screen and the LED lights on the front of the tower (assuming this is a desktop confuser of course. The LEDs should show as one constantly on and the other blinking as the hard drive works.

My computer is running again. I cannot give you the specific words as to what he did - something with "boot track." It took him a couple of tries but he managed to bring it back without having to do a restore from my Acronis backup.

He said 3 things could have caused or contributed to my problem.

Windows Automatic Updates which run at 2am ran into a problem....

I have too much on my computer - 132 GB. He was quite emphatic that Windows does not do well with so much on a computer; I should have 50-60 GB of files, not 132.

My computer is 9 years old which doesn't help.

I am about to make the switch from PC to Mac and this tells me I need to do it very very soon. In the meantime I will get off some of the files I can live without, or put them on DVD.

Thank you as always, for your ideas. I really do appreciate it and will miss you when I switch. I see there is a MAC forum here so I won't have to leave GW Computer Forum entirely :)

Glad to read you have it all fixed again.

The statement about too much data on the hard drive needs clarifying. There is no limit to how much data one can store on a hard drive providing there is always 20 to 25% free space for the swap file to work efficiently A good indicator of too little space is when the activity light on the computer seems to be flashing on and off continually while you are working.

My hard drive is 500GB with 120GB "used" and 344 GB "free space."

My computer guy who I believe is quite smart, feels Windows cannot handle this many files no matter the fact my hard drive is only 1/3 full.

I know the world is full of different opinions and this is his. I respect the opinions of all you guys but don't feel I have to figure this one out since I'm moving to Mac.

He did say I will have an easier time with this much stuff on the Mac since they are Linux based.

Based on the tech's statement one has to wonder why folks buy one and two terrabytes hard drives?

I'll leave the Mac products with Linux based operating systems to those who own Apple products but Linux is free Apple is quite expensive????

Actually OS X is Unix based but so is Linux. I suppose that makes OS X and Linux siblings.

OS X is only $29. It's the hardware that runs the operating system that's a little expensive. ;)

I run Linux and prefer doing so but it's not like it will handle more files.

I had a terabyte or so hooked to XP several years ago and Windows handled it fine. It still will.

Is complete hogwash. Unless he's saying that you had too much browser accumulation. Windows can handle 100 times as much in files to access, and more. There's simply no problem, what you have is light compared to what many have. I myself have more than 10X as much as you and there's no issue at all.

On the other hand, it's easy to justify replacing a 9 year old computer if that's what you want to do. New toys are fun!
