What really is Java, and do I need it?

I googled Java, and read things, still don't understand what this program is, and what it might do to Better? my computer and what I am doing with it?

I guess I just am back in the dark ages here sometimes, don't get the gist of what an article is trying to tell me.

Can someone explain in PLAIN english, what this program does, and do I really need it to run the computer, I know, it sounds like I know nothing, and in some areas, I don't.

Would appreciate any input anyone can provide, you guys are always so knowledgeable, and also very frank, and you also are kind to us.

I have IE-FF, and XP.

I uninstalled java a year ago and never looked back, as far as I'm concerned it's a security risk. Flash has taken over most of the responsibilities of what java does. Some game sites might still require it.

Java is a relic of the early 2000s, when Java applets added needed functionality to web browsers. It has long been surpassed by other technologies.

As we discussed in a previous article, Java has become the #1 way for malicious hackers to break into your computer, using Java's numerous security problems to install malware, viruses, or password stealers. This is a problem for ANY computer with Java installed, PC or Mac.

I had also looked thru the programs, and as I had techie remove several later in the year, didn't find it, so was wondering when the notice came up to download, whether or not I should take the plunge.
As always your advice is spot on, and I do appreciate it a great deal.
Again, thanks and am going back to lurking again, til I have another question, or a problem. Trying not to have either one sometimes is a futile accomplishment.
all the best.

The spent flowers could be deadheaded but it such a large specimen now that (a) it may take "forever" or (b) you may not be able to reach many of the top blooms. I would try to remove dead wood regularly but I would do this around the month of May when it is clear which parts are dry and which ones are just dormant. Opening some areas in the top so light can reach the bottom leaves is always useful too (or thin out the leaves a little). Besides this, you can just do the usual things. Apply 3-4" of mulch up to or beyond the drip line so the roots do not have to be watered often. Add a layer of fertilizer below the mulch using either cottonseed meal, compost or well composted manure. Maintain the soil evenly moist as best as you can. And in case this applies to your soil, amend the soil to acidify if you notice signs of iron chlorosis. This post was edited by luis_pr on Mon, Apr 1, 13 at 7:17

I thought about getting a wall oven in addition to my two Cluny ovens and warming cupboard. When we were building out house, I was worried that I wouldn't have enough space with just the Cluny ovens; which are smaller than the Sully ovens. I ended up not doing the wall oven, because I wasn't sure which one I wanted and I became overwhelmed with out decisions related to building a house. Over five years later, the space I left for the wall oven, still holds my microwave and I have no intention of buying another oven in my kitchen. I easily feed my entire family of six and host large parties with the Cluny 1400. I can't speak for everyone, but like me, I believe many people are use to large American sized ovens and worry about downsizing to something smaller. What I've learned is that my old American sized oven was never very practical, I could only cook things at the same temperature and most of the time I was heating up the entire oven space for something like a casserole dish. And for larger events, the oven was mostly taken up with something like a turkey making it almost impossible to cooks sides on the same day.

Shower systems - what are these? what do I need really?

It may vary from brand to brand, but 'thermo-balance' [or pressure balance] valves automatically decrease the hot water flow if it senses a decrease in the cold water. This way, if someone flushes a toilet, the bather isn't scalded. These are also called 'anti-scald' valves, and are required by code almost everywhere and so are pretty standard. They usually control the volume of water as well as the temperature. Thermo-static valves generally cost more. They automaticly control both the hot and cold, so that the shower temperature doesn't change. They allow you to pre-set and forget the temperature of your shower ['remembers' the temp from shower to shower] and you use the volume controls [you may want a separate volume control for each shower element] to turn things off and on.

What kind of chair mat for new LVP? Or do I really need one?

The difference between the old vinyl you had and the new LVT is the LVT is thicker with a core. So, the wheels can make impressions or indentations. You may use a hard surface mat. Here are a couple of examples. You may not have any issues if you don't use a mat, but why take the chance? Protect that flooring investment! (note: the flooring in the photos is not LVT) LVT

If I ever get the notice from a web site that I need java, then yes I may install it at that time. I have never received any notices in about a year now. Some of the old games do still or may require Java but are quickly being replaced by Flash.

Think I recall reading the default minimal microsoft java isn't the safest thing in the world and that alone I would think would have most people actually wanting to install the current the most current oracle java & their auto updates.

Java runs many games including on WL/Yahoo messenger, and it runs some chat rms. I certainly need it and keep it updated on all 4 or my PC's
