Really old hydrangea, what do I need to do for it?

Hi. My husband and I bought a house that's been in the family since it was built in the forties. Since, we move in late in the fall, we are still learning about the plants on the property. I believe we have a very old hydrangea, likely 50+ years old. I've attached a picture. We have removed 3 wheelbarrow loads of dead wood from the underside of the canopy, but what else do we need to do for this plant?

The picture keeps posting sideways, I'm sorry.
