Bringing the 'Outdoors' - "In" for Fall

All summer this wall has been EMPTY (since painting/new floors early in the yr. I finally happened upon the 'perfect' picture for my wall & it's for FALL! It's a canvas print I bought at Gordmann's ...here it is above my Gr'ma's old treadle sewing machine in the living room:

See ...I've brought Fall decor indoors! Also in that brass boot, I cut some Stonecrop Sedum from my gardens today & added that...here's a close-up:

And trying to wait patiently for this pumpkin to dry .... DH & I poured it in a plastic pumpkin early in the week & I'm ready to paint it a bit & add a branch for a stem & some metal leaves on top ....pretty cool ...I got this idea from a garden page I am on alot...but I need the pumpkin to cure a few more days! The glass cage/house I got at a thrift shop yesterday shopping w/friends on a day trip...glass is out of it right now for cleaning...you'll see this pc decorated at Christmas! TFLookin'! Jeanne S.

I am seriously coveting that new painting you have!! Nothing is prettier than Fall tree scenery to me. And its so perfect with the vignette you created under it. (love your lamp too)
Then there is that neat cage!! WOW. That piece is going to be such fun to decorate with. That was a super TS score!

Cement pumpkin idea is really cute.

Thanks, PM ... do you have a Gordmann's? Used to be called 'l/2 Price' stores. I have looked & looked since our floor remodel & painting the walls ...I like to change out framed prints ...& @Christmas I put up that old window from my sis' house when it was tore down w/B&W fave family Christmas photos. This is big ... 35 x35 ...but I LOVE it...it's canvas which I've never bought before.

I had my 1st canvas print made from one of my photos this summer for Winter decor:

And I couldn't pass up that glass cage for $12@ a new thrift shop run by Mennonites ...thick glass panels ...it's more of a creamy color. Jeanne S.

pabrocb, I'm not sure you wouldn't have issues at the inspection station on entering Florida. You could probably sneak a few small strawberry plants through if you kept them hidden and didn't stop at the plant inspection station and buzz right by on I-95. But if you are planning to bring your garden in on a trailer with bushes & trees flapping in the breeze, I'm sure you'll be stopped & possibly fined. It would actually be better to buy local plants acclimated to Florida's climate as most of the northern plants would not survive the heat here. I'm a transplant from New Hampshire and learned the hard way all your fruit trees have to be low chill hours type trees or you will have beautiful shade trees but no fruit. I bought fruit trees from the same nursery's (mail order)that I used when I lived up north and now I have a nice orchard that never makes any fruit just shade. Lou

Absolutely. I bring some in every year. I root it and keep it cool and dryish under lights for the winter. This year there was some in a pot of agapanthus that I kept cold, bone dry and in the dark (around 50 degrees) for the majority of the winter. It remained unfazed by the process, and is now happily growing again.

Skybird, Thanks for the hollihocks! I'll still be bringing those light purple irises.. they're very regal-looking and showy. Also, I'll be bringing some of that catmint. When I thinned out and transplanted my irises last time (Oct 08), I had about a zillion extras, and gave them away to my neighbors and co-workers. Here's a BEFORE shot. Then I dug them all up, washed off their little dirty feet, and separated them. Then replanted about half of them. Here's a RIGHT AFTER shot. And here we are, 3 months ago. Oh....um, oops. As you see, I got some of them mixed up. I think I can pick out the peachy colored ones, if anyone would especially like those. I'll be transporting them the way my momma taught me - bare roots, in a big tub of water. I'll bring ziplock bags so you can keep them wet until you get home. Then, if it will be a day or two until you can plant them, you might want to put them in a big clean plastic bowl with fresh water, just deep enough to keep the roots wet. I'd leave them outside, but not in direct sun. You probably already know the little trench arrangement for putting them in the dirt, but if not , I'll show you on Saturday. By far the biggest problem with winter indoor container citrus is winter leaf drop (WLD) Below is the best remedy to protect against this major citrus problem. Many people seem to have problems during the winter with their citrus trees. There is a phenomenon that affects citrus grown in containers know as Winter Leaf Drop (WLD), which is what happens to the trees during storage in winter quarters. With the appearance of fall and a decrease in temperatures, the trees are brought indoors to protect them from freezes and frost damage. Unfortunately, the most common recommendation freely given for storing the trees indoors is as follows: "Give the tree as much light as possible, keep the medium moist, but never over water. Let the medium dry out more than in summer. Hold the tree at temperatures around 41 - 50 F (5 - 10 C)." If you have followed this advice and have had no problems, you are lucky because most people who did so had problems. The trees start to shed leaves, leaf after leaf drops, and in spring, after the last frosts, when the trees are placed outside again, many trees have few or no leaves remaining on the limbs, twigs and branches. The cleavage is often between the leaf petiole and the leaf blade, the petiole remaining on the tree. Often the dropped leaf shows no chlorotic patterns or any other discoloration. Our first thought is that Winter Leaf Drop was influenced by low-light conditions during winter times. But even with extra illumination Winter Leaf Drop continued. Often, after bright, sunny mid winter days, more leaves are shed than after longer periods of less bright light. So we tried to find out what might be the cause of Winter Leaf Drop. We chose five lemon seedling trees, all about one foot high. The seedling trees were placed in different locations with different conditions: The first seedling tree was placed in a cool and bright location at a south facing window, at temperatures around 43 -50 F (6-10 C). 2.The second seedling tree was placed in the same room, but at a north facing window. 3. For the third tree, we chose a temperate room with temperatures around 59 F (15 C). 4. The fourth tree was placed at the same temperatures but on a south facing window. 5. The last plant was placed in a warm room of 70 F (21 C) at a south facing window with extra illumination. All trees were irrigated as needed, just to keep the root ball moist, but not wet and not allowed to dry out. Only #5 was irrigated more regularly and fed evenly. After winter we found that #1 shed nearly all its leaves. #2 dropped some leaves only, and the others had only lost some (fewer than five) or no leaves. We found light may NOT be the factor causing WLD, so we thought about temperature. After a long discussion with citrus experts in Florida and Israel, it was found that temperature will cause WLD. The temperature tables from the book Biology of Citrus show that citrus stops root growth and root function if the soil temperature drops below 54.5 F (12.5 C). Leaf activity will be reduced if the temperatures drops below 64 F (18 C). Leaf activity means the full process of water evaporation for leaf surface cooling, energy transformation (photosynthesis) and starch reduction for building amino acids and other compounds for forcing plant growth and cell development. Citrus controls its leaf temperature by evaporating water from the leaf blade. This reduces the temperature even during hot periods and will maintain the leaf temperature at the optimum levels between 77 F (25 C) and 95 F (35 C). But even on cold days the sunlight can heat up the leaf surface quite quickly to levels beyond the critical temperature of 54.5 F (12.5 C). Photosynthesis itself works better in cooler conditions with high light radiation than in the warmer periods of the day, so most of the photosynthetic starch production is done in the morning before noon and less water is evaporated than during the afternoon. Optimum leaf temperature for photosynthetic activity for most plants ranges from 50 F (10 C) up to 90 F (32 C). Photosynthesis itself needs carbon dioxide, light and water to transform the carbon dioxide into starch and oxygen. During the night the starch will be oxidized to provide energy needed for plant growth and development. The whole process is called breathing. Water and nutrients for the breathing process must be taken up by the roots. Oxygen and carbon dioxide will be delivered from the air around the plant, taken up by the leaf surface (and to some extent by other green parts of the plant) so leaf and root activity must run in a balance to provide the best plant performance for growth, flowering and fruit development. If a citrus tree is stored at temperatures below 54 F (12 C) but gathers enough light for photosynthesis, this balance is broken. The leaf activity requires water, which the roots cannot deliver. The tree stops evaporation and water will be unavailable for cooling the leaf surface on bright days, so the tree reduces active leaf area by leaf abscission. This seems to be the best theory about what causes WLD. Partial or complete defoliation was never critical if the root ball was kept a little more on the dry side, but if it was too wet, a quick root decline developed even if Poncirus trifoliata was used as a root stock. Most of the trees recovered quite will in spring (if the roots stayed healthy and a heavy bloom was set). But in recovering the whole canopy, often the trees used up much of their starch reserves in the stock, which did not fully refill during the short summer times. After some years, many trees suffered, growth was stopped and the trees died because all of the starch had been depleted. So what to do about WLD? Irrigation during wintertime seems to be a recommended practice to slow down WLD. Irrigation with warm water 77-90 F (25-32 C) supports the root function, even the water uptake, so WLD will slow down. Irrigation reduces the plant stress during cold winter time and is therefore recommended. Keeping the trees in a room with high humidity seems also to slow down WLD but cannot prevent it. Also a place more in the shade, to minimize leaf activity, slows down WLD. Keeping the root temperature below 64 F (18 C) but at or above 59 F (15 C) seems to work best for stopping WLD. The plant functions are minimized, but water and nutrient uptake for leaf activity is high enough to support the breathing process and leaf surface cooling by water evaporation. If WLD persist, force the root temperature higher, around 70 F (21 C) this should stop leaf drop. Sometimes during the winter, fruits dry out on the tree and drop if the tree is stressed too much. So for fruit development and fruit maturity, higher temperatures and good leaf activity should be maintained. Irrigation with a nutrient solution should be done even in winter.

Hi party ...good to hear from you, too ...I haven't posted pics for awhile ... I am not selling ...this is just one of my fave photos from last Winter out the porch window ... it's printed on canvas (not by me) ...I had it done ... most any photo shops or Walgreens, Walmart, etc. can print on canvas ...it's price-y ...but I wanted to try one. Thank you for your compliments & I LOVE your baskets ...but shipping & the cost would be too much... (this canvas size (12x20) is in the $50 - $60 range). Glad you like it! Thanks! Jeanne S.

Jeanne, so glad you found time to share some of your wonderful fall decor w/us. What a perfect print to complete your fall vignette above your DGM's treadle sewing machine table. Great seeing your brass boot filled w/sedum. The pumpkin on your metal leaf is a neat idea. Just love the colors you chose for this vignette.

The glass cage/house looks like a fun thing! I'm also excited to see how your pumpkin turns out. I love others crafts!

What I love the most is your winter canvas print!!! That is so neat. BTW, You are such a sweetheart to share your Bird Pictures. People like you are precious and few.

Love the Winter photo you chose to transform onto canvas. It turned out beautiful and will make a wonderful folcal point for the season. Pricey yes, but so well worth it and can be enjoyed forever! My DD is pretty good at photography and has done that with photos of my DGKs on the beach..
I like changing pictures too, especially in main areas that get decorated for ea season. I always enjoy seeing yours change as well!
Great find with the glass caged house and love your Jack O project...I'm looking forward to seeing it when you're finished.

Jeanne, I've always loved your bird photos!!! -- but I got to thinking after I posted to ask and was worried that I had offended you by even asking. :( A photo is a very personal thing and I should use my own photo for something like that!

I had also wondered if your original bird photo was taken with a regular camera or digital, and if the latter, what was the resolution setting? but now I see your comment about using 'larger format' so it pretty much answers my questions. :) Too bad... last year I saw a Pileated Woodpecker for the first time in my life -- they're HUGE! -- and I got some great digital photos of him, but they were not high-res photos. I stopped using a regular camera in 1999!

Jeannie,I love your fall and winter themed pics. You are a super talented photographer and always seem to get just the right moment to get the perfect shot. Trying to get the perfect pic of wildlife is hard. You can't tell them to stay still and smile, knda like my DGC. I love how you arranged the little vignette on your GM's sewing machine . The brass boot reminded me of Candy's beautifuly painted boot in shape. Thanks for sharing with us.

party ... yes I keep my camera set on the highest resolution most all the time (unless I accidentally hit something to change it) ...I switched to digital long ago, too...but it was a 'hard' decision after shooting 35 mm for so long...but it's the only way to go!!! Can shoot, shoot, shoot ...wonderful ...pick & choose!

I'm giving catching up another go which I'm so happy about because I didn't miss this.
Your new fall print is wonderful and I'm over oogling your birdie print. Your bird photos are always some of my most favorite.
Love the concrete pumpkin to. If I had an ounce of energy left ,I would borrow your idea for a pair to go beside the porch steps.
The couple of times I've put out the plastic ones themselves, some neighborhood human weasel has swiped them. Least a concrete one , they would have to muster some energy to haul it off..LOL

Thanks for sharing about the canvass photo printing from Walgreens, what a great idea. Unfortunately I have a problem with wall space, LOL. In my house, its that little area between picture frames! I've got way too much stuff on the walls, big surprise huh?
What I am kicking around doing is from an idea I saw on Pinterest. About going to Staples (I think) and getting the poster-size photo print for $5. I have several very large Whippet/Greyhound paintings, and it occurred to me that maybe I could put one of these jumbo prints right on the front of the glass and tuck edges into the frame. I don't think most folks would realize it wasn't framed if they didn't look close. I'd planned to try it with some Xmas pix from my files, soon as I find out what kind of picture I have to take to them to reproduce. Maybe I'll get one done for Fall and see how it goes now I've seen your lovely artwork.

Karen ... that sounds like a good idea to try (poster prints) ... kind of like that idea of 'gift wrapping the framed print on the wall that some have shared in the past.

Here's a recent bird pic that I've shared on another gardening page ... harvested my sunflowers & this is out the porch window in a recycled bird feeder. The squirrel scared off this Woodpecker but he kept flying back to see when he could have a 'go' at the Sunflower again! ;-) Jeanne S.
