Having To Scroll Horizontal When Viewing Net?

Dell 4600/1GB RAM/2.4 Processor/XP/17" LCD monitor. I wear glasses. I have to keep fonts readible. It is more comfortable to view the screen at the lowest size 800x600. The next size is 1024x768 which I find uncomfortable.

My regular programs such as Word Perfect and Links fit within the screen very well. On the Net it seems I'm more often than not having to scroll horizontal to read or see much of what's on the screen. At electronic stores I've seen monitors that are rectangular as opposed to the squared 17" I have. Would the new monitor cure the problem or is there something I can do with what I have to straighten it out? Thanks, Gene

If a website has a width of 955px it will not fit in your screen which is 800px (760px). The only way to fix your problem is to up the resolution to 1024 and change the text size so that you can see it better.

One other option is to use a different browser. I use Opera (free at Opera.com). It looks a lot like Internet Explorer, but has a number of nice features that IE doesn't. With it, you can enlarge the page/font to whatever size is comfortable for your reading (up to 10 times normal), and then hit the "Fit to width" button, which will make the page fit your screen by doing a word wrap that lengthens the page. You will only have to scroll down; you will not have to keep scrolling from side-to-side.

There are a lot of people on this forum who care deeply about the lining-up of their drawers. I find this pretty puzzling. But recognize there is something of the self-selection among anal retentives and being on this list to begin with! (That is, caring-about-drawers-lining-up is disproportionately selected for as a trait among GWebbers, almost by definition). So when I say no one could accuse me of being easy-going, even though I don't care about drawers lining up, that sort of satisfies this thesis: people who are on here to begin with care about minutiae (read: are anal retentive) and so you will find a bunch who care about drawers lining up. But you don't have to, and still retain your AR card carrying status. You can't care about absolutely everything in life before tipping into the truly pathological never-leave-the-house-OCD world. So it's OK to pick and choose your battles. For me, no way is this one it: just no way at all. But I know there are many, many (had to go back and add another "many") battles I choose that legions would shake their head in wonder at. Quite frankly, I think if you let this one go, it leaves with with a slight net to add some more to your plate. For example, I find myself spending a lot of time fighting public-schools battles. It leaves me with less caring for the lining-up of drawers. But my point is: there's no Rule here, it's almost a lifestyle-decision. And YMMV quite legitimately on that. p.s. I think it also depends critically on the kind of drawers you have, as well as layout and drawer fronts. I have cherry shaker-style wooden drawer fronts, and none of my stacks anywhere really lines up like the above pictures with horizontal and vertical lines. So it's OK when stacks are not like one another; they aren't really in any direction (I now realize). There also isn't that shininess that lends itself to the uber-symmetry. So again, YMMV for multiple reasons.

We have an iPad and though I like it, if I'm going to do any amount of typing I'd rather use something with a keyboard. If I want something small and portable for internet, email, etc I prefer my iPhone since I can carry it anywhere in my pocket. The iPad is really DHs electronic newspaper reader so he can read all his papers online. He too prefers a keyboard for typing. It also has no DVD drive but I did buy some software that allows me to copy a DVD onto the iPad. Not sure what netbooks have in terms of a DVD drive - I think they also have no such drives. iPads also have no USB ports. We have a older compact desktop and an older big laptop. If I were going to get another computer right now I would consider a small laptop - like a net book size. Don't need one right now though so who knows what the latest technology will be by the time I do. Big plus of iPad compared to net books is much longer battery life.

If you are running W10 then you could open Edge and when you have said article on screen and click on an open book icon top right which is reading view and you would have the article minus any advert crap, this is a very nice feature of Edge.

I can't believe I didn't see this thread before now! Great job, Jojoco! Productive, creative and fun. My grandmother built a dollhouse for my younger sister, but I think I loved it even more than she did. I always thought it would be great fun to do one. The only one I have done was inside a jewelry box. I remember the bed was a fabric covered penny and I thought a round bed was the coolest thing ever. It would be fun to do a standard sized one.

I am only musing here but I do not think many sites are built with a fixed size over 800 pixels wide. Those that show full width on a larger screen (as this site does) are set up to fill the screen they are being displayed on.

The hit counter on one of my web sites shows that about 80% of the traffic are using a resolution of 800 x 600, most of the rest are 1024 x 768 with a tiny few larger. Based on that I wonder if your problem might be due to a setting on your computer rather than the sites you view. Give us a link to a site that requires you to scroll sideways.

CNN is my home page. When I log on I have to horizontal scroll almost a couple of inches to read the right side. I appreciate everyone's advice. Gene

Go to the 1280 resolution and when you get to a website where you are doing some reading, hit the Cntrl button and rotate the wheel on your mouse. Each click of the wheel increases/drecreases the size of the font to where you want it.

...but that doesn't resolve the problem originally raised about horizontal scrolling. That's why I suggested a different browser.

Wow, so much for my web site knowledge. CNN has a table width of 980 pixels. Surprising but more larger monitors are readily available now so perhaps CNN assumes all the reader have those larger screens.

CNN looks and fits fine here and I'm running on a more smaller monitor.. 14.1 inch laptop at 1024x wide IE window.
