PC techies, advanced users, please help

I appreciate any help from you knowledgeable peeps.

A lot of people at the electronic stores are not that knowledgeable or are confusing me.

I am looking to purchase a PC, because my old one is on its way out.

I want a FAST computer. I'm not into games, music, or videos. Although watching TV, or a DVD would be nice.

#1 NEED is to wisk around the web quickly (have NO patience!).

- I may be running a website/business.

This computer may be temporary UNTIL the all-in one are perfected and the prices go down. Because of that my budget is low-ish.

I am confused what EXACTLY makes the computer run fast.

Which things should I look for in order to have the fastest possible operating computer without spending a fortune?

-Is it the amount of GB?

-Is it the amount of storage?

-Is it the processor?

-Is it the quad core?

-Is there much difference between Duo vs Quad core?

-Is it the combo? In what way?

-Which can I forgo and get the same affect as having ALL the top of the line?

Would a 8G, Duo core, be faster than 4G, Quad core?

Please keep it simple. List the things I need, and what they mean. I need help without someone trying to sell me something. I'm very frustrated. I'm not that computer savvy. TIA

To do this you want a fast internet connection & a fast video card. If custom computer $100 - 200 video card. doesnt make much sense to go fast on an internet connection if you can't draw and paint the page it loads fast.

" i did find midi files, but i am not happy with them. and, none of them have the lyrics." I always found midi files to be extra, extra cheesy but I figured that was just an XY chromosome thing. Good to know we are in agreement here!!! Keep in mind that since partingwishes.com does not allow HTML or any other sort of creativity in designing a tribute page the way YOU want it, you can take your page elsewhere where they are more flexible with what you want done. There are MANY sites that offer free webpage hosting. Most offer easy, simple tools you can use to build your page. Yahoo's Geocities is one of many. I use it and I like it a lot. Another way would be to use Macromedia Flash to design and create your page and then publish it on the web. Flash does have a pretty steep learning curve, imo, but it is an awesome tool and has many uses. One of the MANY great things about Flash is that it can synchronize audio, pictures, video seamlessly into a relatively small file. Peewee's tribute, for example, was done in Flash. If you decide to go that route, most schools offers courses in Flash.... or you can get your B.S. degree from the School of Hard Knocks and figure it out as you go along. Works for me!

Thanks, Raven. I'm sure he's behind on lots of stuff. Early in 2009, I had him change his update settings to notify him of updates, but not automatically download. That was to hold off on sp1 (at a time when I think I read here that folks were having trouble with it - but I didn't follow that topic, so didn't realize sp1 had become a good idea and that sp2 followed). We also set it that way bc. his computer was automatically updating and then rebooting when he was in the middle of doing other things. So this was to allow him to time his own downloads and installations. But he just never thought of it - and I didn't think I needed to keep track for him. I do keep track of his Avast, superantispyware, malwarebyte and spywareblaster. Every now and then when he's done surfing I have him leave out the laptop and go ahead and update and scan. I'll have to keep track of more than that, obviously. I got foxit reader on my ancient laptop in my office and love it. It takes so little room and does what I need quickly. Do you like pdf-xchange viewer more than foxit reader? Or does he need to use firefox to use foxit reader? I installed firefox for him - and set up tabs with the places he likes to go (did that in the summer) - but he hasn't used it. He's a bit resistant to tech changes. He balked when I got Tivo's - although he loves it now. He's a musician - and I got him Protools so he could record the music he wrote. That was over 1 1/2 years ago - and he hasn't learned it yet - he's barely scratched the surface. Last spring he bought an Imac bc. it was better for recording music. And now he's finally setting up his den and equipment. I'm hoping he'll actually learn the software this year. I'll take care of the rest for him so the only learning curve he has is Protools (certainly the most challenging of them all). But I digress. I'll check his other updates and run Secunia - I'm pretty sure I already put that on his computer last year. Thanks. Lynn.

if he goes to the link in my post that is labeled Analysis and Malware removal, at LzD, they will assist him in removal, he will need this type of assistance or it will not be gone as you found out previously. The infection will definitely prevent you from trying to install new programs that would try to remove it, that is a normal tactic for these infections, it will also render your current programs to not function properly so it is questionable whether or not your Norton is able to function as it should since the infection has likely altered it. AVAST is free but you can NOT have 2 antivirus programs running on the pc at the same time so unless you have removed the Norton you do not want to install any other antivirus programs. The malwarebytes is ok to install and run and definitely should be run if the infection will allow it. The LzD link I provided can assist in getting the pc to allow the programs to be installed and run. As shown on the siri.urz blog cyber security is one of the current known fake AV infections, it is not easy to eliminate and need the use of specialized programs and tools with analysis. Vista user here. My AVG has had no problems. As well, I use SAS without concern. I don't use any other firewall than the Vista because it is bi-directional. AVG is and has been a wonderful application. Many users switched to Avast when AVG v8.0 was released, and the AV and spyware detectors were combined. AVG might have rushed the release a bit without sufficient testing. There were problems and some users ran around as if "the sky was falling". There is always the potential for burps in any software. However, in general everything is fine now and you can't go wrong with either application. DA

Ahhh, good suggestion re Video card. Can you give me a few choices for a video card?
I want to be able to UNDERSTAND how everything ties into the SPEED, and make logical choices.

If you don't play games, almost any computer will be fast enough.

It's the software that you will be using for your businesss that might slow things down.

If it's for business, you should plan on a backup computer.

I've got several computers, including a nine year old desktop that has never been upgraded. It whips around just fine on the Internet, and pages open just as fast as my newer computers. Your Internet experience is going to depend almost entirely on the speed of your connection. As for other software, my old computer doesn't open applications like MS Word or Excel as fast as the newer ones, but there is no problem once the program is open. If you are going to not edit movies or play resource intensive games, just about any moderately-priced computer will work fine for you. And, unless you intend to run a multi-national company, standard inventory and accounting software should run just fine, too.

well quad core with the highest amount of RAM you can afford would be the fastest typically, do you need that much no idea. Depends on how much you want to spend on this pc.
I like AMD processors myself and they are generally a bit cheaper so going with AMD would save you some and still be just as fast or faster. If you go with a 64 bit operating system then you can go with plenty of RAM and since RAM is cheap it is smart to get plenty. As to hard drive size that totally depends on how much you plan on storing and what kind of files, text don't take up much space on the other hand video, music, movies, pictures take up much more so you would want a bigger hard drive. I thing a 500 gig drive should sure get you going. Having a back up drive is always a good idea, a usb external drive is a great option. Since windows 7 has built in imaging backup program having an external hard drive to save image to is perfect.

Just read up on google and go with what you can afford.

Dead simple, use a browser with tabs so you can open many windows at the same time. If speed to jump is associated with the financial markets use 2 screens as well

You 'may be running a business'. If so buy it right first time, this is a write off at 30% per annum (assuming U.S. rules are the same as Canada) Buy peripherals separately so each is a total write off in the year of purchase. (Bought collectively with the computer you may find yourself having to lump it all together to be written off at the 30%

That is not controlled by the computer, it's controlled by the connection you have. You need DSL or "business quality" cable connections. Normal household cable is shared with everyone on the block and it can be very slow.

If you plan to run a website/business, I strongly recommend you just pay a few $$ a month for website hosting - siteground.com is a good one with lots of free tools and templates - because setting one up from scratch is a technical nightmare and your thinking a fast CPU = fast internet indicates that you aren't geekish enough to do it.

Any computer currently on the market is enough for web, office stuff and viewing DVDs.

Buy the cheapest one you can find and pay extra for more RAM (lots more RAM) and a good graphics card.

have an old win98/k6-450 512 pc100 ram desktop/local-network-server

People think is the fastest computer they have ever seen when they use it to surf the web. heheh
It loads and scrolls webpages really fast.

I think its really slow personally. I guess loading its old photoshop remotely from the laptop isnt so cool across the wifi network. But works fine once loaded.

It has matrox graphics card and fast hard drive, and the 7.1 dsl connection. That's why it seems so fast to people used to slower graphics and internet connections.

those sound like very good specs I would bet you will be happy with that system and monitor. Congrats on your new toy!

I see it comes with Norton 2009.
Here is one review of it. Link provided.

This is definitely the slimmest, most unobtrusive Norton ever. Its protection is top-notch where it counts, though antispam and parental controls are still weak. As the best all-around security suite yet.

Minimal performance impact. Extremely effective spyware and virus protection. High-powered, comprehensive firewall. Free, proactive support. Phishing protection. Automated log-in, form-fill. Network map with remote configuration.

Antispam misses too much, blocks too many valid messages. Rudimentary parental controls. Network map allows no remote correction of reported problems.

Given those specs you should be fine for the next ten years or so! And with your described needs, I doubt very much that you need a new video card, or that you would notice any difference if you replaced the one that comes with the computer.
