Light colored granite remnants in Los Angeles area?

Hi All,

I'm helping my mom with her bathroom remodel and she will have a dark wood stained vanity. We both love the look of marble but she is worried about the staining/maintenance and has decided she would like a light colored granite top instead. I think Vermont White would be a lovely compromise, but don't think it's readily available in our area. Does anyone have a sense of this?

Are there any slab yards in the LA area with a wide variety of remnants? Suggestions on a different granite are also welcome. The rest of the color palette will be light sagey green on the walls, white tub and sink, polished nickel fixtures, possibly subway tiles laid out in a herringbone pattren. Also considering some calacutta tile accents with maybe a bit of steel blue or warm beige/greige for contrast. She really likes glass tile so want to figure out how to incorporate that in the shower/tub area.

Every yard that had an on-site fabricator that we visited had remnants. Some white ones to look for are Bianco Romano, Andromeda White, Kashmire White and White River. Those are the common ones that usually have the same name from place to place, there's lots of others whose names vary.

We have Andromeda White (purchased from Stone West in Ventura) in our kitchen for 4 years and couldn't be happier. We just put Bianco Romano (purchased in SLO county) in three bathrooms. Our master has a dark wood vanity and grayish green walls, and lots of white tile- sounds very similar to what your mom's planning. It's not all the way done yet, but LMK if you'd like me to snap a few pictures.

Ky31 doesn't spread by rhizomes or stolons, but it does spread by tillars. The tillars will eventually become independent of the main grass plant and then produce tillars of their own. I just think of tillars as short rhizomes. Again, KY31 will handle your dogs abuse. My female dog does urinate in the grass and it does damage it as expected, but it recovers quite well. in fact, it's proving almost impossible for me to kill. When I first planted KY31, I didn't know anything about lawn care. It was my first home and when I moved in, the back yard was basically all mud. I picked Ky31 because it was the cheapest. After having such great success, and learning more about lawn care and turf, I've become somewhat of a lawn care nut. I renovated my front lawn (that was mostly ryegrass and weeds) with Kentucky Bluegrass and Turf Type Tall Fescue. That looks amazing in comparison to my backyard KY31. Late summer and early fall, I tried torturing the KY31 backyard. Repeated scalping during the heat, not watering in the heat of summer, rough rough raking with a detaching rake and shovel, etc. this was in preparation to overseed Titan RX, an improved variety of tall fescue. after the overseeding on top of the overly abused KY31... The KY31 has survived. Hardly any of the Titan RX is present in the lawn. the seedlings were all choked out of existence. im serious, I think KY31 will survive a nuclear apocalypse.

I applaud your interest in using a practical groundcover for your hot, sunny area. This spring, I bought some rupturewort and planted it in a dry, sunny area. I'm watching to see how quickly it spreads. So far, it seems to be performing well in the 90-plus temperatures we've been having here in Fort Collins, CO. If it looks viable, I may use it as a lawn replacement. I've also been playing with Veronica pectinata because it's evergreen, has a beautiful green color and is drought-tolerant. It has been performing surprisingly well so far along the pavement at the edge of my front yard. Only thing is, after it blooms, it flops open for a while and looks ugly while it produces seed and recovers from blooming. But it's currently putting on more leaves and will look lovely again before long. So it's a question of whether you're willing to put up with a month or so of ugliness. Creeping thyme is quite attractive. It can, however, die out and turn brown in the middle, making it unsightly. Your mention of clover is intriguing. I researched it online. It appears that clover is quite drought-tolerant. But it's a short-lived perennial that needs to be reseeded every 2 or 3 years. A number of sources suggested combining it with grass. So if you wanted to experiment, you could seed Dutch white clover among your existing grass, you could see how it works out for you.

I agree, produce a base plan showing all the existing elements, key dimensions and so on. But planning and reflection would be where I would recommend starting. As part of planning ask yourself what size and types of gatherings you would hope to host, what key activities would need to be supported by the outdoor spaces? How does the yard work with the entertaining spaces in your home? How could improving the yard inform the look and feel, function of those entertainment areas in your home? Do you have a terrace or deck by the house with transitions to other outdoor rooms? Will you have formal events or a mix of casual family friendly activities? Sports areas ie lawn bowling, playing catch, playing with kids, or no kids and adults only? Nighttime versus daytime vibe? Think about the seasons, holidays and so on as well. What might change over the year with usage patterns? Make a list and prioritize all of this to think through what you envision. What’s possible, where are the gaps? Do you have a partner or spouse and do they share your vision or? Would your entertaining be DIY or with catered? Or a mix? Bands, musicians, what would the needs be for that? Do you have dedicated storage for entertaining related items, access to power etc. in the yard? Buzz me if you need more insight I’m planning. Good luck!

Start making phone calls. They usually don't keep track of what's in the remnant section well enough to say whether they have a certain trade name stone as a scrap, but most granite dealers will let you go through the yard and pick one you like.

Take a sample of cabinet and flooring (I took a door and a spare floor tile) to help you pick.

I went through a couple hundred chunks and managed to find two pieces I liked. I only needed parts of one, so that was a successful trip. I saved about 40% over the cost of buying the same stuff from a whole slab

Ok, I took some pictures for you. We've been fogged in, so the lighting isn't great, and keep in mind that we're not done yet (note paper on floor!). These pictures do the best job of capturing correct color tones, even though they're not the best...We'll post finished ones soon :)

The vanity is about 10' so here's two shots of it to get your bearings, as well as a peek at the linen closet, shower entrance, and WC door. Then two closeups of the vanity which do the best job of capturing granite color (especially the first):

We did three bathrooms all using the same slab. Here's a picture of it in our gray guest bathroom with a white vanity, and our white bathroom with a black vanity:

The white granite route is a great way to go if you know you just can't be happy with the patina that marble will acquire over time.
