CD/DVD drive

I put a CD in my CD/DVD player on my laptop and it's stuck in there. It ejects but without the CD. Any ideas on how to retrieve the CD and fix it as well?

Sounds like you may need to take the Laptop apart to get it out so we don't cause anymore damage. I think your best option is:

Take it to a local technician.

If you are not afraid of the computer try going to Youtube and type in the make and model of your computer. Very likely there'll be a video tutorial on how to take it apart. Just pay attention to detail if you try and keep screws separated by size as you dismantle.

If you are of a nervous disposition then go the route Zep suggests.

This is going to be an interesting issue. Here's why. You are going to have to unplug the old drive from the inside because the bios is going to see that it is there when you are reloading Windows. It doesn't look at the current install that you have. First you need to unplug the old internal CDROM. Second, start up the computer and go into the "Setup" menu, with the external drive plugged in. As soon as you start the computer, there should be some Compaq screen that pops up and tells you to push F10 or something like that to get into the setup screens or what some call the "Bios." The bios is software that runs on your motherboard and allows access to different startup and hardware aspects in your system. You need to go under the startup sequence menu and look to see if the external drive is recognized. If it is you can load Windows from that drive. If not, let me know the exact make and model of the external drive and I can see what your options are.

I have been trying to correct the same problem with my HP with Vista 32 bit. After reformatting, it is there but doesn't stay long. I tried to find a fix but everything I found required a fix in the registry. In my own research I did find the fix he used, but was afraid to try it on my own and I still had a warranty. I finally called a tech and he walked me to the MS site and had me download a fix for it. Worked. I saved the fix, but it's on my lap top. If you think it could help you I will see if I can find out where I got it and the name.

Hi, all you nice people who tried to help me. I decided since nothing else worked, I'd have to install a new network card, as suggested. A younger friend came over and did it for us, out of the kindness of his heart, but still no results. He took the computer away and had another friend work on it, and at HIS house, it did connect to the Internet. Long story short, the trouble turned out to be that the router would no longer work with my computer, and when a new one was installed, the problem was fixed. Since these friends were very, very busy for several weeks, I had to rely on my husband's computer for the Internet until the two friends had time to spare for mine, and I certainly do not begrudge the wait. Now everything is running fine. I'm sorry for not reporting on this and thanking you all immediately, but certain other situations had arisen that kept me so busy that I forgot a few things I meant to have done sooner. My only guess about the router trouble (I tested and found all the ports on it were still working just fine for my husband's computer.) is to wonder whether it could have been caused by my unplugging the ethernet cable from my computer a number of times when we were going to be away and there was a possibility of thunderstorms. I recall a box popping up requiring me to make choices about a network, which I didn't understand, because we have no network that I know of. We only plug into the same router and our computers are not connected in any other way. But I mention this in case it makes sense to someone here who knows computers, so that you can help someone else if they have a similar problem. Again, many thanks.

Mike, I have an Inspiron 1545 - is this what you mean? Let me know if you need more info. I would still like to download the driver for my laptop, but how do I do that? I do consider myself "adventerous", but not when it comes to computers, haha. owbist: thanks so much for the info, but like I told Mike, I don't feel comfortable when working on the hardware in computers. This morning I'm NOT able to burn a CD, but right before that I was able to play a movie. I don't know what is going on. Now I'm sure I'm not able to watch a movie either. So, how do I "download" this driver file. I see it, and it is actually in my download folder, but when I try to download it, it says there are no files to download. When it says download, it says "save file", not RUN, like I want it too. Any suggestions on this? Thanks! I appreciate all the advice.

What's the make an model #

We ask because, basically we just Google the make and model with the word dissemble in the search terms and hope to find some sort of instructions,

I don't recommend it, but we could try to find instructions and you may make a decision at that point in time.

Great tutorial! Thx for recommending it Chuggerguy. Zep, it's HPg60 series, I googled it and found out how to remove and replace it. Owbist, I will try to keep all screws nicely separated. I'll TRY to do it by myself. I'll come back and let you all know the outcome. Thx again all. Great group of people.
