CD/DVD drive

I put a CD in my CD/DVD player on my laptop and it's stuck in there. It ejects but without the CD. Any ideas on how to retrieve the CD and fix it as well?

Sounds like you may need to take the Laptop apart to get it out so we don't cause anymore damage. I think your best option is:

Take it to a local technician.

If you are not afraid of the computer try going to Youtube and type in the make and model of your computer. Very likely there'll be a video tutorial on how to take it apart. Just pay attention to detail if you try and keep screws separated by size as you dismantle.

If you are of a nervous disposition then go the route Zep suggests.

This is going to be an interesting issue. Here's why. You are going to have to unplug the old drive from the inside because the bios is going to see that it is there when you are reloading Windows. It doesn't look at the current install that you have. First you need to unplug the old internal CDROM. Second, start up the computer and go into the "Setup" menu, with the external drive plugged in. As soon as you start the computer, there should be some Compaq screen that pops up and tells you to push F10 or something like that to get into the setup screens or what some call the "Bios." The bios is software that runs on your motherboard and allows access to different startup and hardware aspects in your system. You need to go under the startup sequence menu and look to see if the external drive is recognized. If it is you can load Windows from that drive. If not, let me know the exact make and model of the external drive and I can see what your options are.

Can't Play or Rip music from CD in WMP

I guess this isn't the problem then. I have WMP open and it doesn't even recognize that there is a disk in the Drive E. I first noticed this last week when I tried to rip some songs off a DVD. For instance if I put CD audio into Drive E, and choose "Rip" it tells me to insert a CD, and eventually ejects it. However I can play a DVD in the same Drive on WMP.

depending on how the drive has failed using the freeze method does work in some cases. However you need to be very fast and be ready to copy the data off to an external drive or flash drive it will now last long when it starts to thaw which is instantly. You need to put it in a zip lock bag in the freezer and leave it normally over night to get a good solid freeze. Then if you have those blue ice frozen things as soon as you take the HD out of the freezer keep that blue ice on it to keep it cold (some people actually use dry ice). Good for you Bev, you will love it! We are on our second Dell, this one is just a year old. We have found the service just great. This one right from the start seemed to run a much louder than our first(which we had for six years) and it also seemed to get much warmer than the other. We called Dell they sent out a tech, he installed a larger fan, and we were good to go. No charge. Carol

What's the make an model #

We ask because, basically we just Google the make and model with the word dissemble in the search terms and hope to find some sort of instructions,

I don't recommend it, but we could try to find instructions and you may make a decision at that point in time.

Great tutorial! Thx for recommending it Chuggerguy. Zep, it's HPg60 series, I googled it and found out how to remove and replace it. Owbist, I will try to keep all screws nicely separated. I'll TRY to do it by myself. I'll come back and let you all know the outcome. Thx again all. Great group of people.
