guys i need help

there is an old couple that lost everything last year and I would like to help this year's christmas to be special. I posted freecycles to see about help 3 days ago absolutely zip. so I need to find really beautiful very low cost items I can make. they have no decorations and i am on a limited budget but I want to make this a year for them to remember. so any help or advise would be great.

Here's a tip. You might want to try the $ Stores. They have great things. You don't have to spend much, and they're cheaper than if you were to purchase craft stuff to make them.

I wouldn't have thought of it, but Jane is right on. The Dollar Tree has a lot of cute things and they're already putting out christmas things, so you could purchase just a few things each pay period, and have enough to make a nice display by Christmas.

You could check Good Will or other thrift shops for a tree if they need one.

People are very generous especially at Christmas, I wouldn't give up on getting help. This is a very nice thing for you to do. - Gail

Your plants are on the spindly side. They need more light. But you also need to know that strawberries have a dormant period for part of the year. There should be a number of holes in the firewall already that has wire or cable going through already. If one one of those is in a convenient spot, just enlarge or cut another hole in the rubber grommet for your wire. If there isn't one existing in a good spot, drill another hole making sure it will be in a good spot on the other side of the firewall. Install a rubber grommet in the hole to protect the wire from the sharp edge. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

hi corrie, i've been looking awhile for you... harder than it sounds, isn't it?! usually the type/brand of hood dictates how high above the cooktop it should be. will you have a microwave combination hood or just a hood under a cabinet? or a chimney style like marcydc's? with the sink, it's totally up to you... you can have cabinets or shelves, or you can elect to have no cabinet... even with a fancy backsplash up to the ceiling. these aren't on the same wall, but it gives you an idea... Here's my own perspective from an entirely different climate - fwiw. I love Young Lycidas! I'd read some bad reviews but really wanted the color, and it was my surprise favorite of the year. Yes it's lax, but I find that can be graceful. It has personality. Some have suggested Darcey as an alternative and I'll agree she's an absolutely wonderful rose, tidier and more compact if that suits your garden design better. I'm discovering that my favorite DAs are those which do not have thick canes and vey upright growth. I don't want my English roses to look like Grandifloras. Not that I hate modern roses... For those with similar tastes, I will offer that so far I'm not pleased with the growth of the Lady Gardener. Too erect. Maybe maturity will round it out. Concerning the "modern" character of Sir John B, I haven't figured out yet. Mine have begun as low, broad, sturdy branching plants. The foliage is a bit shiny, but not the shiny plastic look of some Kordes roses, for example. The color is bright, but not garish. Deeper than bright. Medium pompon blooms with good substance. They're both rain and heat tolerant and last a long while without fading. I think it's a rose that could make a nice bridge between modern and old style roses. I grew a Hyde Hall hedge that didn't work out. It had dramatically uneven growth, much winter die back, and terrible back spot. It might like a drier or more temperate climate. Beautiful, plentiful blooms, very little fragrance. Sorry for no pics, my hard drive crashed recently :(

I've found wonderful Christmas things at Goodwill, all year long in fact. And of course "Twenty" Dollar Tree as I fondly call the place. You could post on the Wanted section of Craigslist too, tho often trees are listed in the free section this time of year.

Bless for doing this for the old couple. They will LOVE whatever you do for them.

You might also try thrift stores as you can get some wonderful treasures there. Also, Family Dollar, although not a dollar store, has larger items like Christmas trees, etc. for small amounts of money.

Hopefully, you'll get more replies on Craigslist as the Holiday season approaches. Also, if you have time, yard sales are a great place to find some bargains. All the other suggestions are great, too. Good luck!

You might also contact your local Division of Aging and other social service organizations closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Many organizations call wanting to adopt a family at the holidays...it would be a wonderful opportunity if the couple would agree to it. Items received probably vary, but I've seen gift cards to Walmart, grocery store...etc. Presents of socks, blankets, houseshoes...etc.

Plus food for the holiday meal, many places do Thanksgiving and Christmas both. Churches and Salvation Army are also great resources to try.

Our Dollar Store has quite a few holiday items...even $20.00 would buy a lot decoration wise. Goodwill Stores and such are also great places to try.
