Toto toilets, about to purchase

I am going to be purchasing 4 Toto Aquia toilets. I am purchasing them because my plumber uses a specific supplier that doesn't deal with Toto, but he will install them. My question is, what do I need to know? Do I just purchase the tank and bowl, or are there other parts that need to be purchased? Do they only work with toto toilet seats, or are any ok? Any recomendations on where to buy them?

I recently bought two Toto toilets, but they were one-piece units and came with everything in the box (including the seat), so I'm not certain about the Aquias. I'd suggest calling and talking to a knowledgeable representative at a merchant that sells plenty of Toto toilets, to try to make sure you get all the answers you need.

If it helps, the company I used was HM Wallace in Georgia, which does business online as PerformanceToilets.com, NationalBuilderSupply.com and FaucetWarehouse.com among others. (gives some background info on the company.) Unlike some online sites, this is not an online-only storefront; it's a large brick-and-mortar company which has developed online sites with good pricing and knowledgeable sales staff. They get weekly truckload shipments from Toto, so if they don't already have the toilets you want in stock, they'll likely have them within a week. (A local Toto dealer I spoke with quoted 3-4 weeks because they wait to aggregate several orders.) HM Wallace also ships toilets, free, using UPS and FedEx; many other companies use freight lines and charge for delivery.

Go to www.toiletsthatwork.com. It will give you all dimensions, whether or not ADA, rounded/elongated, etc. We have the Ultramax II and like it a lot. We have the Soiree in our other bath, It has the double cyclone flush which is really great. Cotton white is whiter than colonial, which is more off white.

I don't have an answer. But in doing my own research lately I found that the folks at the Terry Love toilet forum love the Aquia, and Terry has installed a ton of them with good results. I bet if anyone knows, someone over there will! I almost bought an Aquia, so I read a lot about them.

Jackfre: "Now, buy the Toto Washlet 300 Bidet seat for it." An advanced toilet seat, yes; a Toto Washlet 300, no. Inax, which invented the advanced toilet seat and did all the basic research on what were optimum configurations, determined that the optimum angle of incidence of the water spray for "posterior" cleansing is 70ÃÂ° from horizontal (or just 20ÃÂ° from vertical) and -- therefore -- from the start manufactured INAX seats with two independent spray wands, because a wand that was positioned to deliver a spray at the optimal angle to the "posterior" position was not well placed for directing a spray to the bidet position. So INAX designed its seats with a separate wand specifically for the bidet spray. Each of the two INAX spray wands is positioned to deliver the water spray at an optimal angle. Toto, which was a couple years behind on the basic research, decided to use a single spray wand (with two nozzles) for both functions. In order to do that, Toto had to position the wand for the posterior cleansing so that the spray impinges at a 43ÃÂ° angle, actually closer to horizontal than to vertical. The 27ÃÂ° differenbe in the angle of spray means that the spray that hits the posterior orifice is angled toward the front of the toilet (think about that). Knowing that difference, when we purchased an advanced toilet seat in the United States, we purchased an INAX Clessence, and it is superb. The rest of our extended family resides in Japan, and most of their homes have Toto Washlets, because the contractors who built their homes had a "special relationship" with the local Toto distributor. (Special relationships are VERY important in Japan.) We have stayed in their homes many times, and -- believe me -- the two-wand INAX toilet seats clean what needs to be cleaned better than the one-wand Toto Washlets. They just do. Toto, which has been in the North American market longer than INAX has, and INAX, both use American subcontracted internal parts in their toilets sold here, but I am unsure whether they, or either of them, subcontracts for parts for their seats. However, INAX (technically, INAX's corporate parent, Lixil) purchased American Standard a year or so ago, so you can be assured that INAX is "all in" for American sales and distribution. FWIW, if you read closely in the toilet forums of the Terry Love website, you will see that Terry Love himself, who is a big fan of Toto toilets, has at least one INAX Clessence installed in his own home, presumably on a Toto toilet. Our Clessence, also, is installed on a Toto Vespin II. The white color of the INAX Clessence (the only color option) is as close a match to Toto's "Cotton White" as one could hope for.

I must repeat, as I always try to, that I am of record as a friend of the owner of National Builder Supply and I write a blog site that I use their name in because of my friendship. I am not employed by them nor paid to endorse them. With that said I am a customer of NBS having bought both 2 Toto Ultramax toilets and just recently a Toto Washlet and as a customer not just a friend I highly recommend them. Now to show my fairness I recently did a project(for a soon to be published blog) where I compared prices, freight and service on some of the larger online marketers in addition to HD and found that National Builder Supply and Faucet Depot were neck and neck regarding both and far above any of the others. Equally as part of my daily life I read and respond in some 30+ discussion forums such as this one and find both to have the greatest service recommendations. If anyone is interested in knowing the oevrall results of my project and the other marketers let me know and Ill tell you when I publish the blog. My conclusion at the end of my survey was a very Strong Cavet Emptor because some of the ones I reviewed employed considerable trickery when it came to listing prices then when you get to the point to settle up your shopping cart you find excess freight charges (especially on tubs and toilets) and hidden service charges. I am truly disappointed and trying my nest to make sure the word gets out.

I bought three Totos locally after calling several plumbing supply, building supplies or bath/kitchen stores asking for the price. I ordered so much stuff from the place (crown molding, vanities, Panasonic fan, recessed wet light, etc.) that I got a 15% project discount....ask for it since you are ordering three. When I ordered one of them took about 3 weeks to come because it was on backorder. Everything was in the box that the installer needed. There is no reason to order a seat from a separate manufacturer.
For other tub faucets I ordered online, not everything the installer needed was in the box. He contacted his preferred plumbing supplier and went to get what he needed that was missing and he knew the right questions to ask. Your person could do that too.

Just to clarify something in Sue's post: the one-piece Toto toilets include a seat. Most (all?) two-piece Totos, like the Aquia the original poster is planning to buy, do not include the seat. If in doubt, check the Toto web site, or call their customer service.

I ordered my Aquia in there pieces: tank, bowl, and seat. After seeing the soft-close seat in a showroom, we opted for that (maybe $30 more than the normal seat?) and it's great. personally I wouldn't want to mess with the sleek lines of the Aquia by using an aftermarket seat on it. The seat fits it perfectly.

We also just ordered an Aquia III...I just had a hard time making up my mind which I wanted but really wanted a skirted toilet and ADA. We had to order the three parts-soft close seat,bowl, tank.

Hi Sammiecanada,

I just bought an aquia 3 recently. Was wondering how much you paid for it (before taxes)? I'm in Canada too and got it for $640 which I thought was pricey, but the cheapest of the 3 places I called. Just curious.

Works great so far. The 3 isn't quite as sleek as the 2 which I have in another bath but oh well. For some reason the 3 has a sort of bump out on the bowl which makes it wider. Sort of like some wide hips. It's weird. Oh well.

How was the installation of yours? I have read they are a bit difficult. I had tried to get the newest Vespin but there is a long delay so decided on the Aquia 3.
