Scan it then open your documents folder and look for scanned documents.

you need to read the info that came with your scanner, it should open up a scanner manager once you scan something and show you the scanned item and ask if you want to save it, edit it etc.
In answer to your question yes you can do that, how exactly depends on your scanner.
As Zep said usually it will save them to your scanned documents area of my documents check there if it is not opening a manager window.

You asked a dumb question, I have a dumb answer, LOL!

If what your are scanning is not to be used for some OCR reader and to convert it into text file, you may try this very easy way:

Set your digital camera to the highest resolution and just take a picture of it.

It kind of depends on what you mean by "redo part of it." Scanning a piece of paper just creates a digital image of that paper, just like if you were to take a digital photograph of the paper. You can do things to the "scan" like you would to a digital photograph. White out areas, add text, etc.

The next step is optical character recognition (OCR) where software looks at that image and interprets a picture of characters and coverts it to actual text that can be edited. The problem is that the quality of the OCR software can vary and it often isn't a 100% acurate translation. You can also loose formatting with things like columns and tables.

As for how to use the software, the best I can suggest is to read the manual of help file that came with your scanner and software.

Those are all good answers. Now what is it you want to do with the document exactly...?

Kudsu9, DH is on the rules committee for an organization and they have the rules on a spreadsheet form. He wants me to add another class in the middle. Now I did it by printing everything off then using sissors and tape and putting it to a new piece of paper, but there has to be a way of working on the original without doing that. He also needs some rules changed or added to, I hate to have to type it all out making changes as I go. Now you see the real problem....laziness.

As mentioned above, OCR (optical character reading) software does work, but you usually have to go through the resulting document and clean up the text because some errors will creep in. And, a lot of OCR software works best with plain text. Older versions will not necessarily be able to figure out what the formatting is for the table, and preserve and translate that to another document that you can easily modify. There are programs out there that can do this with varying degrees of success; however, you may spend more time fooling around with this than if you just typed the document from scratch.
