.bak files revisited

I deleted the .bak files from my recycle bin before I remembered there had been a discussion about it..all "seems" to be all right so far. But..is there some place where you can turn off the pop up to compress files? I had Windows 98 for years and would compress files once in a file on my own and never got .bak files. Can you turn that option off?

Until these last 2 or 3 threads on the .bak files I have never looked in my recycle bin. I did look just now to see if these were on my confuser too, and they are there. However under normal conditions I have never thought of inspecting the recycle bin. I simply empty the thing periodically without a thought to the content.

Why would you want to disable an added feature? It is not like it pops up every five minutes to bother you. To me it is a useful aid.

It "does" pop up quite often...not every five minutes, but often enough..and then my recycle bin is full. I sometimes put something into my recyle bin and leave it there for a while just to make sure that I won't be needing it...when I go looking it is full of .bak files...you can compact those e-mail files manually..or at least I used to do it with Windows 98 from time to time.....I guess it is just that I'm dealing with something new...I'll probably get used to it.

There is a reason, Steve. I have not repotted it. That's the pot I stuck in before it went dormant,when I dug it out of DH's MA garden and we brought it (dormant) to Alabama. The same was true of Mama plantaginea, low soil, and I bare rooted and repotted her a couple of days ago. I think it was a good move. Also, poor little Eskimo Pie from that same move, was bare rooted, what was left of it, and now I wait and see if it recovers. The NOID Satisfaction needs the same treatment.Steve, do you think the soil has that much impact on the looks of two identical hosta? It is the newer Satisfaction that is later emerging, and it is in good potting mix. Of course, I did not even think about the soil making such a difference until now. But oh boy, I see the original group of hosta from 2010 will all need repotting this year. Should have done it last year, mea culpa. Means I must now repot S&S, Lederhosen, Dick Ward,the remaining hosta from my very first 2010 order with Plant Delights. The Seawright order from 2011 was not put in the ground, so that low soil problem does not exist. Thanks for bringing my attention to the issue. My project for the day is repotting those hosta.

Sometime back OE, when you compressed the database on many computers, would lose all your saved data. So microsoft had an update to send them to trash before compressing. Might look and make sure OE seems to have all its files/folder before deleting if you don't use your email often.

If you're waiting on the $8000 tax credit, that means you're a first-time homebuyer? We were "move-up" homebuyers and therefore had to provide different info. We had to prove that we lived for 5 years in a previous home within the preceding 8 years (or something like that--I've already forgotten) which required copies of proof of paid real estate taxes or mortgage interest statements for that time period--I provided both---to cover ALL bases so they couldn't come back and ask later for something else. Then on the new house, I provided both the HUD settlement statement (well within the period, which we did up front because we financed the build and "closed" before construction even started) AND the Certificate of Occupancy (that fell just before the extension deadline). They only required one or the other on both old and new residence, but like I said--I wanted to cover all bases and not have them coming back asking for something different. If you followed the guidelines and qualified and submitted what they asked for, you should have no problem getting it. Good luck!

Hi Everyone.....I just joined....Thank you so much for all the wonderful info in this thread. You see...GFG was one of my grandmothers favorite quilts to make. I begged her to teach me (way back when I was a pre-teen) but alas I never got to learn. She has been gone for 27 years now and I have been trying to teach myself....LOL....Now with all your help I will be able to make my Grammie proud. I am going to start out small....ie...Chair pads.I remember Grammie making pillows. Then work up. I want to make one each foe my 2 granddaughters. I have lots of material, just need to get them sorted. I do have a question or 2.. ;o) If I decide not to put a white border around each flower....what should I use? Light or dark fabric? And does it all have to be hand stitched or can I cheat and use a machine? Also...do you use the hexes for yoyos? Grammie made these as well? Dont know how to make them. No, sorry, you can't turn it off, it's part of an update... When you use the Compact Folders feature in Outlook Express it makes a copy of your folders before hand then places those copies in the Recycle Bin when the task is complete... About the only way to cut down on the amount of .bak files in your Recycle Bin is to NOT run Compact Folders very often...

Well as Rita says there appears to be no way to stop the notice from appearing. However if you are also concerned about the recycle bin filling up you do in fact get a warning on that if it gets too full.

I only empty my bin during a disk cleanup and that is not too often either. By default my recycle bin is 10% of the hard drive - 25 gigs. (Isn't that foolish? Not long ago I thought I was king of the hill with a 32 megabyte hard drive)

You can have your deleted items removed immediately rather than go in the bin if you wish. To do that right click on the Recycle bin and place a tick beside "Do not move items to the Recycle bin.............." but then you cannot restore a mistaken deletion.

I want to tell you....I have a LARGE hard drive...the guys in the computer store were laughing "at" me...not "with" me about what I ordered. But..I can take it...the first computer I had (this is my second) the kid I bought it from said I would only need a 20 gig hardricve and 64 RAM...and no one needed a CD burner. I had never bought a computer before and took his word for what I needed. My son to this day says I over paid (bought locally) and I probably did. But...I didn't have a bit of trouble with that computer and it was still running smoothly when I bought this one....it just wasn't "enough" for what I wanted to do. I had added more RAM, but it was also Windows 98 (which I loved) and things were passing me by. It doesn't bother me a bit to be laughed "at" in this case (I bought locally again and they remember me in there...the first store closed) :o) He says I have enough memory to last the rest of my life...we'll see that's what the first kid said....
