I'm a newly converted admirer of plate racks. In the past they've seemed a wee too country for my taste; turns out my impression was based more on the decor of the rooms I saw them in than any fault of the rack itself. If you've had the same impression, maybe it's time to revisit the rack.
The red plates peeking out here pick up the accent color used throughout the rest of this modern kitchen.
Stacked dishes can lead to scrapes and chips—a tough break (excuse the pun) if you've got a dearly loved collection of plates. Racking them lowers the likelihood of a chip.
Here, a mix of china patterns and colors makes for a colorful and eclectic display.

The plate rack comes off as streamlined in this contemporary craftsman kitchen.
What's that by the sink? Let's zoom in and take a look:
This rack is across from the kitchen's dishwasher, making it conveniently close for storing heavier pieces.
Same thing goes for putting one above the sink. Plates get can be put away with ease.
Depending on the surroundings, a plate rack can come off surprisingly modern. Who knew?

I have long been a fan of traditional plate racks - even though (or perhaps because) none ever showed up in family kitchens, from either grandmother to Mom and four aunts. It's a great way to have plates right at hand without having to open a cabinet or drawer, but there's no horizontal surface to collect dust or cat hair.
