Low Disk Space

All of a sudden the low disk space icon appears in the bottom right tool(task) bar.I have cleaned ever thing up that it asked for but yet it returns evey time I re start.How do I make it go away? Win xp pro Thanks

How much space do you have left? Open My computer put your mouse over the LOCAL DISC a window will pop up showing the total size of the hard drive and the amount of free space left post that information.

As far as turning that warning off the only way I know of is editing the Windows Registry:

* Open your registry editor by typing " REGEDIT " in the run prompt .
* Navigate as follows : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer.
* Now Right Click in the right pane , Click New -> Dword and name it as NoLowDiskSpaceChecks. .
* Double-click on NoLowDiskSpaceChecks, and enter the value as 1, and press OK.

If you are not comfortable doing this don't do it.

Making a mistake in the registry could cause real problems.

I can do what you said but will that negate the icon from returning when it might be needed? I cannot fathom ever running out of space,I have just about as much on here as I ever will but don't want to cause any problems down the road. I see you are also an early riser or late getting to sleep.Thanks for such a quick reply

My goodness gracious, this really isn't that complicated. If you suspected a bad drive, what you should have done is determined the manufacturer of the drive and downloaded the manufacturers diagnostic utility. If it reported errors, replace the drive (perhaps under warranty) if not, look elsewhere for the source of trouble. As it appears you replaced the original drive, the new drive is blank and has no operating system hence the error message. You have four choices: Reinstall the original drive and run the appropriate diagnostic utility to see if the drive is actually failing. Leave the new drive in place and reinstall the operating system via the supplied recovery disc which will return the computer as it was when you first opened the box. Once that's up and running, get all the Windows updates and install any software you'd like to use. Of course, you'll loose any data on the old drive. You do not need to download any drivers first unless you've made big hardware changes to the computer. "Big" changes would most likely be video or sound cards. Use the original drive to make a clone (exact copy) of the drive contents on the new drive. Every drive manufacturer includes the necessary software and instructions in the package or makes it available as a free download from their website. While this method will preserve your son's data, if the problem wasn't the drive but rather, say, some corruption in Windows, those problems will continue. Leave the new drive in place and reinstall the old drive. Run the recovery disc, installing Windows to the new drive. As described above, get Windows updates and reinstall any software. Selectively copy data files from the old drive to the new drive. If the diagnostic software indicates impending failure, do this part quickly. Let us know how you want to proceed and if you need additional instructions.

Bee4Mee and Genes, thank you both so much for tryng to help, I'm beginning to wonder if this machine is ready for computer heaven! I'm pretty sure that with my pc illiteracy that I have screwed this poor thing up royally. For now I'll just shut it down and cool it for a while, then get back to some serious fixing, like taking it to a repairman! Thanks again.....Pat

fwiw Speaking of backups... recently playing around... Have 8gb ram so I used a freeware, RamDisk, a very small program, to make a RamDrive = 770mb for RediBoost & balance for Browser cache & windows low disk space avoidance. Anyhow while searching web for how people use ram disks trying to figure out what I was doing wrong .. initially my startup & shutdown times went up ... I came across a regedit setting on increasing hard disk cache.. for win 7 / vista anyhow.. maybe same for xp. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management LargeSystemCache default 0, changed to 1 = supposed to be hard drive cache. ......... after changes both graphics ratings went up .1 from 6.2 to 6.3 in Windows Experience Index Daily backup & image went from 17 minutes to 11 consistently . Just confirmed once now, it was the registry change that sped up the backups. Thats quite a time savings here ... I usually stop and twiddle my thumbs when backup runs. Thought some here may be interested in trying that registry tweak.

Posted by bpgreen (My Page) on Sat, Sep 6, 08 at 23:20 The fact that Avast scanned 100 of the 27 gig on the drive tells me there may be some invalid directory listings. Go into My Computer, right click the C: drive and select properties. Then go to the tools tab and click the Check Now button. Then check both the checkboxes on the next screen and click start now. It will give you a message that it has to be in exclusive mode (I forget the wording) and that it will run the next time you restart Windows. Reboot and let it run through the entire check process. This may not be the problem, but my dad once suddenly found himself almost out of disk space and this process fixed things for him. Thanks for the information. I tried the scan. (I usually do it by putting "chkdsk /f" in Start > Run, which only goes through 3 stages at reboot; but doing it your way took it through 5 stages, so was more thorough. Nevertheless,....) Nothing showed up as being in error. My aunt took the computer to a knowledgeable friend of hers who could not discover the actual source of the problem, but was able to recover some space, so she's now at 3 GB of free space instead of 217 MB. Unfortunately, it's still below the "15%" needed to do a defrag, but at least it's more "usuable" until it can be looked at more thoroughly.

If you've got 58 GB free, you shouldn't be getting a low disk message.

Have you tried checking the disk for errors? Run windows explorer (not internet explorer), right click on the C: drive icon and select Properties. In the tools menu, click the Check Now button near the top. You may need to reboot and let it check the drive on reboot.

I can't explain why you're getting the icon with that large percentage of space on your hard drive. Unless you plan to add huge files (like videos, or large amounts of music files) in the future, I doubt you'll have a problem. If you're nervous, check the free space on your hard drive every few months. I've got a computer with an 80GB hard drive, with about 10GB free, and I've never had any problems.

Copy and paste the following into Notepad, set File Name as lowdisk.reg, Save as type: set to All files and Encoding as ANSI, then save it to the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoLowDiskSpaceChecks"=dword:00000001

Double click on the file and confirm merging with Registry. Job done.
