Low Disk Space

All of a sudden the low disk space icon appears in the bottom right tool(task) bar.I have cleaned ever thing up that it asked for but yet it returns evey time I re start.How do I make it go away? Win xp pro Thanks

How much space do you have left? Open My computer put your mouse over the LOCAL DISC a window will pop up showing the total size of the hard drive and the amount of free space left post that information.

As far as turning that warning off the only way I know of is editing the Windows Registry:

* Open your registry editor by typing " REGEDIT " in the run prompt .
* Navigate as follows : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer.
* Now Right Click in the right pane , Click New -> Dword and name it as NoLowDiskSpaceChecks. .
* Double-click on NoLowDiskSpaceChecks, and enter the value as 1, and press OK.

If you are not comfortable doing this don't do it.

Making a mistake in the registry could cause real problems.

I can do what you said but will that negate the icon from returning when it might be needed? I cannot fathom ever running out of space,I have just about as much on here as I ever will but don't want to cause any problems down the road. I see you are also an early riser or late getting to sleep.Thanks for such a quick reply

Bee4Mee and Genes, thank you both so much for tryng to help, I'm beginning to wonder if this machine is ready for computer heaven! I'm pretty sure that with my pc illiteracy that I have screwed this poor thing up royally. For now I'll just shut it down and cool it for a while, then get back to some serious fixing, like taking it to a repairman! Thanks again.....Pat

Basically it's safe and the right thing to do, imo. If you don't run the disk check, you would risk writing new photos to a damaged area of the drive. As long the disk's file table is not damaged, probably the worst that would happen is a few bytes or sectors have some corruption, and if you're lucky, you only have one or two damaged or irretrievable photos. If you do lose access to the drive, there are recovery tools specifically for recovering photos, namely "PhotoRec" which works very well. After you get everything working again, you might think about some kind of backup system so you have more than one copy of the photos. This post was edited by kbarb on Wed, Nov 26, 14 at 16:43

I'm too lazy to check if I said this before, but when we moved to this small town we had a lot of friends and stayed that way until our children grew up. Most kids here go to college and move back to raise their family. One of mine did too. Except we have no extended family here while our old friends have all sorts of family. And that's who they now get together with for holidays & other gatherings. No outsiders included, period. To make matters worse, DS built a house close to us, his wife was and still is like a daughter to me, her parents and siblings became my family since I have no one on my side in the state. Best in-laws a person could ask for. Both families went to DS and wife's house every holiday. And then DS divorced her, and holidays aren't the same anymore. He has a fiancée now but I don't know her very well, so it's kind of lonely with no women to be with this time of the year. His fiancée is kind of standoffish so I have to give it time. I should have expected it would be this way when my kids were little and their friends had birthday parties with only family, which included lots of cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents. That was hard to explain to my kids, why they weren't invited. When the kids were around 11 I did get a new BFF who moved here from out of state. They moved away a few years later for the reasons listed above. lol There's nowhere to volunteer, nothing. Strangest place I've ever lived, but I hear it happens in other small rural towns. At least we're relatively close to a large city for entertainment.

Wow I don’t k know how I missed this thread until now. Lily I love how your garden is looking already, I love the set up you are implementing. I wanted to just second Kristine’s suggestion of the faun/fawn as a low growing rose. The apple blossom and all the other ideas here look wonderful also. here on the right bottom edge. I had just moved her this spring and it just kept on going and blooming. It blends in well while keeping her color in the sun. Another rose with a stronger color I can recommend is the new polyantha Kendyl Marie. It is a wonderful bloomer and seems to just drape down. It is taller than the Faun here but still staying low. The mini You are the one would also stay small and it blooms all the time.

If you've got 58 GB free, you shouldn't be getting a low disk message.

Have you tried checking the disk for errors? Run windows explorer (not internet explorer), right click on the C: drive icon and select Properties. In the tools menu, click the Check Now button near the top. You may need to reboot and let it check the drive on reboot.

I can't explain why you're getting the icon with that large percentage of space on your hard drive. Unless you plan to add huge files (like videos, or large amounts of music files) in the future, I doubt you'll have a problem. If you're nervous, check the free space on your hard drive every few months. I've got a computer with an 80GB hard drive, with about 10GB free, and I've never had any problems.

Copy and paste the following into Notepad, set File Name as lowdisk.reg, Save as type: set to All files and Encoding as ANSI, then save it to the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoLowDiskSpaceChecks"=dword:00000001

Double click on the file and confirm merging with Registry. Job done.
