Does GE still use dual evaporators (such as climate keeper 2)?

Hi,

I am just doing a little research on which fridges have dual compressors or evaporators. We remodeled our kitchen in our last house (3 years ago) and our final choices were SubZero or GE Monogram. Both did not share air between the fridge and freezer. We ended up with a Subzero and there was a noticeable difference between it and any other fridge we owned as far as food freshness and frost.

Our current house has an older Amana side by side that has started making some loud noises. I spoke to a repairman about this and he said it might last a long time or be going. While I am not in a panic to replace it, I want to do some preliminary research and was trying to figure out which fridges used dual compressors or evaporators,

I cannot find any mention of it on the Monogram site or under Climate Keeper. They say they do not have any models. We cannot afford a Subzero and the only other brand I know of that has dual evaporators in the Samsung.

I would prefer a French Door, but don't mind a side by side if the compressors are better.

The good news is that you don't have to go up to a Monogram to get dual evaporators with GE. Their Profile line has them. And all of their newer French doors have them. They are coming on the market with the largest capacity in class of SxS and French door fridges with 29 cubic feet. New insulation technology allows them to keep the same outside dimensions and gain a lot of interior space--and they've put that extra space to good use by making the door bins even more functional. The 29 ft French doors should be available in pretty much all retailers, but the SxS will be a small dealer and HD exclusive for the first year, athough they will not share the same model numbers or exactly the same features. GE builds several models for HD that are "exclusive" much like Whirlpool does for Sears with Kenmore. The 29 ft French door is actually built by Samsung for GE (to their specs) in an arrangement giving Samsung access to the exclusive insulation that they hold the patent to. All of the rest of the GE French door fridges are built by GE themselves. No relationship with LG on refrigeration anymore.

I wouldn't touch GE if my life depended on it. Well actually, I DID have the GE Monogram and they were a health hazard, what with growing a HUGE mold colony in the evaporator tray right by the open vegetable/fruit bins and which GE considered within normal operating procedures.

The freezer had such an ice build up the door couldn't close properly thus causing hazardous fluctuations in temperature.

Replaced with Miele - MUCH, much happier

Dual evaporators prevent mixing the air from the freezer and refrigerators. This prevents transferring odors and even taste. This can't be done with a single evaporator. Dual compressors give you redundancy. It is highly unlikely both will break at the same time so you will have at least a refrigerator or freezer. Dual compressor systems have a performance and efficiency advantage over one single speed compressor refrigerators. A variable speed compressor has a small efficiency advantage over dual compressor refrigerators. It is debatable which if either has a performance advantage. A year ago all Monogram refrigerators had the ClimateKeeper2 system. Dual evaporators plus one single speed compressor. It seems they no longer give the specification on compressors and evaporators. Having said all that GE does not have a good reputation when it comes to refrigeration. They announced some major changes to their freestanding refrigerators including bringing back some manufacturing to the US. I have not heard of them making changes to their built-in line. If you are not getting a big discount, on the magnitude of 40% or more I would look elsewhere. This is a long term investment. If something major fails within 12 years most people replace a freestanding fridge. Most people will repair the built-in unit. And keep repairing if something else fails. So you are entering into an expensive long term relationship with your built-in fridge :)

We have the "Climate Keeper II" system on our GE Profile 26 C.F. SXS. I does a great job of keeping foods from drying out in the fresh food section. It has 2 evaporators one in the freezer and another for the fridge section. It also utilizes a variable speed compressor. We've had the Fridge for almost 2 years and it works great. Ken

Interesting! It just seems to me, a dual compressor setup would not only be way more expensive than the OP's budget, but would also be way more complex and expensive to operate than initial assumptions. The greatest greatest power sponge on these things IS the compressor. The greatest opportunity for efficiency IS how the manufacturer uses the compressor's ability to make the regrigerant hot. It's the evaporators that do the main job of making COLD by remove the HAT from the compressed refrigerant. By deploying an evaporator that removes more heat in the freezer section and an evaporator that remove less heat in the fresh food section, there's little need for complex valving and venting,... just the normal amount of it needed to adjust usual temp ranges in these sections. Typically, -14 to 8 degrees for the freezer section and 34 to 46 degrees in the fresh food section. The refrigerant just travels round-n-round in a closed system, and doesn't really care how many compressors are in the loop. It just wants to be squeezed so it can get hot! By isolating two smaller boxes wihtin one big box, then putting an appropriate size and/or designed evaporator in each of the inner boxes, you have a refrigerator that doesn't mix air between them. Sounds like that's what you're after,... and for good reason. This system is far superior to the conventional approach were one compressor and one evaporator cools the freezer first then circulates through vents and ducts the same air up or down to cool the fresh food section,... then back to the freezer for recooling and mixing with new air, then back up or down to the fresh food section,... and again, and again, and agian. All you're asking for is oder transfers, frost, ice crystals, and short storage times for anything not frozen! Maybe I could see the logic in dual compressors in some heavy commercial applications. And even then, if aesthetics are important, there are plenty matching freezer/frige duos on the market,... two boxes that match in every visible way but one is a freezer and the other is a refrig. Still I'm interested in hearing what you dig up in your search. Please keep us posted. Like I said before,... you learn something everyday. That's if you listen!

Tim: If I'm understanding this correctly, you can only get $1,500 max for your tax credit (even if you buy two units), and if I'm understanding these Carrier salesmen who are giving me estimates, the tax credit reduces your taxable income by $1,500. The true amount of cash savings that you realize at the bottom line of your tax return might be only half of that (it all depends on your tax rate). I would ask for a copy of the ARI (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute) certificate that shows that the entire unit, breaking down each piece that when installed together makes your system, qualifies for the tax credit before you put any money down. Only one of my four estimates came with a copy of a ARI certifcate showing that it qualified. The rest just didn't provide the evidence that the unit they were proposing met the tax credit requirements. You don't want any surprises next April, especially if you are really depending on that money.

Does anyone now of any other brands to research? I would appreciate it. I am not tied to GE or Samsung. I am just tied to getting the cheapest fridge I can that does not share air between the fridge and freezer compartments.

live wire oak- Thanks for the information- I am glad they still have it. I wonder why they don't say that anymore. That is the one feature I want.

loves2cook4six- Thanks for the information. I never had the GE Monogram Fridge, so I don't know about that, but am so sorry you had a problem. I have had a ton of GE dishwashers and convection/ trivection ovens (including Monograms of both in my last 2 houses that I loved).

My parents GE Fridge is 23 years old and still going strong. I am hoping you just got unlucky and it does not mean that all of their line is having problems.

Our old GE is also still going strong - moved into the basement. It's the new ones that seem to be rubbish and I don't think mine was unique based on research done once GE refused to correct the problem

My GE refrigerator is a refrigerator from hell. We got a GE Profile Climakeeper2 with dual evaporators and since then we have problems with excessive condensation. There is always water in the bottom of the fridge and after sometime you will just see a puddle of water in your kitchen floor. They tried to fix the problem numerous times with no success. The technician even consulted their engineering group and the problem still exists. I will never buy a GE ref again.

I've had my Samsung 26 cuft FD for 2 months. It is a joy! I'm really impressed with the refrigerator--if you can see it, you can't lose it. The freezer is huge! Love the look and use of it.
