A Bit Off Topic, But Can I Show You Anyway????

I've just picked up a new garden statue we found at an art show earlier this month. He's standing in our living room for now, because it's snowing here today and I need DH's help to place him outside. He'll actually go right outside the patio door wall to our front portal. We're planning on putting him in the plant bed near our abobe banco (bench) area so that we can see him from our living and dining rooms, as well as from our front portal seating areas:

I love him, although I'm not sure if any of you will (hee hee!). He's a Contemporary vision of an Indian Shaman and stands six feet tall. Here he is in our living room where I'll keep him until DH & I can dig a hole and plant his base this weekend. I'm already LOL at what you must be thinking now!

I love his face. He's pretty much entirely copper, although his face has a clear protective glaze over it. BTW, have I ever mentioned that DH is part Native American? His great-grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee.

And this is a close-up of the cut outs on the body. We've been looking for a piece of sculpture for this area, but had to take into consideration the wind factor out front there. This guy should do well . . . we hope! If not, we'll move him someplace else on our property that gets less wind.

Sooooo, I'm thinking an evergreen garland around his neck for Christmas ;^D

Oh, Lynn, I like your new guy! Very striking. I seem to be kind of going through a copper phase right now, so that adds to his appeal for me.

Lynn, I think he's charming and perfect for your incredible outdoor spaces. I love the combination of traditional and contemporary, and the large scale.

It's snowing??? Is that usual there for this time of year? Are you at a very high elevation? I always think of NM as being warm and dry. - Gail

Sherry, If you're asking for advice, I'd go with a natural gas or propane heater for the GH, assuming you've done a enclosure seal check. I don't have a GH, but have talked with others who do in cold climes (although not Maine cold) and that's what they favour. And I know what you mean about the coming season - even though it's in the low 90s here the mountain ash berries are starting to turn and I heard the first Canadian geese flyover this a.m.. To every season, turn, turn, turn.

Isn't it funny how you can inherit a love for growing things? I was born with it....from digging up that first wild morning glory to spending my allowance on a pack of tomato seeds...even without a role model. I can't imagine what my green thumb would have looked like had I had a role model like your grandma! And you prove my point by posting the most incredible flower photos again and again and again. OMG am I jealous of some people! You are an incredibly lucky guy!

Thanks, Fori, for your suggestions. Sorry, took me so long to respond to your comment. I did check out the other forum as well. So far no specific plans for this particular shed. Still kicking different ideas around. At the same time don't want it too rustic for the house/neighborhood. Did find one recently on Houzz that we might be interested in duplicating as well with a few changes (attached photo for anyone's interest). We'll see. But thanks again for your input.

Oh Lynn...he's wonderful. I love all the details on him, and I agree, he'll be perfect for that spot in your garden.
As far as mixing traditional with contemporary..DH was an Art Director and always remarked how people are afraid to mix these two styles, yet how well they compliment each other. I myself, always liked the eclectic look.. I think it's more interesting. JMO

Anyway..I'm excited for you to put 'Him' in place, and to show him off when you do. Good Luck with him.

How fun! He looks like he will fit in perfectly and the cutouts in his body should reduce the wind resistance too. It will be so fun to be able to see him from inside as well as when you sit outside in your wonderful bench area. Great find! TFS Luvs

I've always loved Indian art, not because it looks exotic to the eyes of the European that I am but because the things they create have a relaxing and magical aspect; give an impression of wisdom. In addition, I love copper... So, love your guy a lot!

I came here from the garden junk forum, so of course I adore anything for the yard. He's great and so fitting for your beautiful outdoors space.

Thanks for all your nice thoughts . . . especially since my shaman is NOT the usual type of garden art you see anywhere but here in the Southwest. I was imagining people thinking, "OMG, what in the world was Lynn thinking?!? It looks like a bunch of nuts and bolts to me. How weird!" But, although I'm happy that you can see the art in him, I do know that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. My father, for example, I KNOW will not only think our statue is strange and weird, but will probably say it as well(LOL)! That's ok, I love him anyway ;^D

As for your questions about our snow yesterday and freezing weather, except for the far southern part of New Mexico, we are High Desert, not Low Desert like, for example, Phoenix is. We have four very distinct seasons here, but they're milder than in the Midwest or Back East. Our altitude here in our mountain valley between Santa Fe & Albuquerque is 6,000ft . . . and our skies are almost always blue, blue, blue.

That's a wonderfully creative piece of art! I love the shape and that it's copper! I'm sure he'll "oversee" your garden very well and look so good with the garland! :-)
