I don't understand a word of this!

I just recently signed up at MSN for Dial Up internet connection.

1. There are 3 different e-mail selections. MSN, Messenger and Hot Mail. I only want MSN.

2. The only e-mail I'm getting is when I sign up to join another forum, but I'm not receiving any personal e-mail.Most of what I send comes back as un-deliverable.

3. I have installed Nortons AntiVirus2007.Ran it several times, everyting o.k. Register Mechanic is o.k.

4. BUT then this Network Diagnostics showed up, here is it's report:

Sounds like you already have internet working but your mail settings are off a notch...

Perhaps look here..
Open Outlook Express
Click on the menu item Tools, then select Accounts
Click on the Mail tab if not already selected.
Highlight MSN which hopefully is marked default.
Click on Properties button.
Click on the tab for Connections
Now you should see a drop down box, change it to say dial up modem or something similar as apparetnly its trying to use a Network Connection which the norm if you have a high speed connection like dsl or cable.
Think you need that box to say use the dial up modem.

Hopefully thats the simple fix.

Hi Mikie...well, I had to type in OE, things started moving & I ended up at Windows site for OE installation. Followed instructions, ran the download, nothing seemed to be happening, so decided to call it a day.. When I shut down pc. had a message that msn was installing 1 update. This a.m. I actually had some e-mail, nothing to indicate that OE is responsible for this. Well, I don't know what's happening inside this machine, but unless you have other "fixes", I think I'll leave it alone for now. I do thank you so much for your instructions & especially your time.

I would first start with asking for recommendations from friends. Most people select their contractor solely on price, so you have to be careful. If you like the Trane and Carrier equipment, then go the web sites and search for factory authorized dealers in your area. There is no guarantee they will be good, but it helps improve the probability. Explain the situation you have and ask if they will do a thorough Manual J calculation in order to determine the size of the equipment. You also want the duct work to be inspected to make sure it is the proper size. The proposals should have a complete list of all model numbers of the equipment and details of what work will be done. The contractor should be able to discuss and propose different equipment options and their pricing. If a contractor is unwilling to do these things then keep looking. Get at least three proposals. I recommend staying with the same brand so it makes easier to make comparisons. There is nothing wrong with comparing two brands as long as you understand the details of the equipment.

The article kathy-ny linked above was interesting...but I found this tidbit incredible: The luxury home furnishings retailer is also upping its game on the merchandising front by expanding assortments in categories such as leather, raising the page count of the Source Book catalogs that it mails and adding catalogs in new categories such as rugs. What? In this day and age of paperless electronics, if you can't get your point across in 3,300 pages, 17 lbs. of catalogs, do you really think adding more pages is going to be helpful?!?! Even War and Peace is only 1,400 pages. And the size of the stores they're building is unbelievable. 70,000 sq ft? That's over 1 1/2 acres! Just imagine what they're going to have to do to prices to support that footprint! Yikes!

Pat, sounds like you dont have an icon for OE to click on?? Am I reading this correctly. If you dont, then double click on my computer, click on C, and click on program files. Look for the folder called Outlook express, double click it and open it up. You will see an icon that has an envelope on it. It is called msimn.exe. Right click on it and choose shortcut. Put the shortcut on your desktop. Now you should be able to open it from desktop and follow the instructions above by Mikie. Good Luck :-)Cat

CAT KY.. thanks for the suggestion and you are right! No icon, but I just printed out your instructions and will take care of this. Thanks so much, as you can tell I need all the help & suggestions available, I really get embarrassed by my ignorance of this machine. Just about the time I think I have IT, IT double-crosses me & I'm back to ground zero! If it weren't for people like you & Mikie & many others, I'd be forever up that well known creek without the paddle!lol

The only flaw I see about all this OE is that MSN email is not OE, right.

I am not sure about that Randy, since I have never used MSN. I do have a friend that uses MSN internet and has for years. He does have outlook express email. That is about all I can tell you about MSN internet services.

I haven't used MSN for about a month, so I'm a little fuzzy on this. I know you can either use MSN mail or Hotmail.
On the sign in at the top it says connections, you could look around in there.

Also click Start/ Settings/ Network Connections/ and right click Dial-up, and "Set as Default Connection"
Just from the looks of your original message, it looked like it was trying to connect to a network rather than dial-up.

MSN is an ISP... actually ISP's partner with MSN and do regular, non web based, isp email branded with MSN address's through standard email clients .. outlook/express, eduora, Kmail, etc.

I don't understand a word of this!
