Where Were You???

I was expecting our bus to arrive here this past weekend, so that I could take you all to New Mexico's (very famous) Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, but you all must have gotten lost :~(

Sooooo, I went without you, and took a few pics so you'd be able to see what you'd missed. Maybe next year, Ladies.

This is a wonderful event, but you need to be up, dressed in layers for warmth and on the road by at least 5:15AM for this. The Dawn Patrol (usually 4 balloons) launch right before dawn so that they can get an accurate idea of the prevailing winds. While they do this, everybody hits one of the many food concessions for a delicious Breakfast Burrito (scrambled eggs, hash browns, green chiles, cheese and bacon or sausage, wrapped in a flour tortilla and sooooo yummy! Grab a coffee, OJ, hot cocoa and/or sweet roll to go with it. After all the balloons are up (550-800 of them), you can head back for many more food options if you like:

The hot air balloons go up in waves, and we're right down on the field with them as they inflate and launch. Everyone is excited and in a great mood, taking pics . . . and munching on our breakfast burritos.

I thought of you all when these "Special Shapes" balloons went up.

I had a great time with DH & DD . . . but did still miss you all.(DH's face partially blurred for privacy, sorry) He's still my cowboy:

Oakley: did you notice that I wore my University of Oklahoma jacket? What a great way to meet other former Sooners . . . fun!

After leaving the launch field, we always head to the big arts & crafts fair down the road, conveniently scheduled to coincide with the fiesta. Bought a great new rug for DH's study there and had more fun.

Wow that is beautiful!!! A couple of weeks ago they had a balloon festival at Baylor University. On Sunday morning, they had a target run that the target was right behind our church...in a shredded corn field. It was amazing to have them so close to us.....Sunday School was held in our parking lot!! Several of the "balloonists" came down and "parked" so that we could see the balloons...we gave them coffee and cookies :^)

OK. You've convinced me. I'll be there next year. Talk about breath-taking! Do they give people rides? I've always wanted to go up in one.

I never knew they had "Macy's Parade" hot air balloons. How funny!

I think a good addition to this discussion is how my parents got married. It was August 3,1935. The impact of the Depression was still felt and so couples delayed getting married for financial reasons. My parents' crowd of friends included 4 unmarried couples and one married couple. They were all in their 30s and even early 40s. My mother was a preacher's daughter, but her father could not perform the ceremony in those days as my father was (Chicago Irish)Catholic. So everyone wanted to elope. They put together a caravan and traipsed all over central Illinois that day to each other's weddings. Dad had a friend who was a priest in Toluca, Illinois, so that was where they were married. Then they all went off for their honeymoons.

I was in my classroom at school. My kids were in their morning special class - don't recall which one but I went back to my classroom after dropping the kids off and started doing my normal daily routine. No one came into my room during that 50 minute timeframe. I got my kids from their special class and no one mentioned anything, which leads me to believe that at that time, that teacher didn't know about what had happened. We spent the rest of the morning working and it wasn't until I took them to lunch at 11:30 that I heard anything about what had gone on. I was in shock - I felt Wow! My kids (kindergarten) and I had 2 1/2 hours more of innocence than alot of Americans. I don't recall if we were told to tell the kids or not - seems like we were told not to turn on the TV - which we never did have on anyway unless it was for an educational purpose. I do recall that a letter was sent home with the kids stating that some teachers had told the students and some had not. I think there was an area for us to check as to whether our specific class had been told. I do recall that some parents had come and picked their kids up from school but none of mine did. (I'm in Florida). As it turns out I did have one student who had just moved to our town from NY City during the summer. The Mom told me later that she was on the phone all day trying to find out about her brother who was a fireman in the city. She knew her son was safe and thought it was best for him to be in school rather than at home listening to her frantic phone calls. She did call the school after lunch and by that time the office knew that I had not told the kids. She always picked him up and that day she was at the door at dismissal time. She asked to use my office and took him back there and talked with him before he could hear anything on the sidewalk. At that time she didn't know what had happened to her brother. Turns out he died in the collapse of the second building.

What a different world it was before 9/11. I was at work in downtown Minneapolis getting ready to help out with a United Way fundraiser event in our office. My co-worker in the cubical next to mine just stood up and said the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. As the saying goes, the commonest things happen most commonly, and I immediately thought of the World Trade building in St. Paul and the tiny downtown airport there and knew it must have been a terrible accident. Terrorism never even occurred to me. It wasn't until I went to the internet that I understood what was going on. I had a very close friend who was a flight attendant for United at the time and she called to let me know she was alright. She was in absolute shock, watching TV and telling me that a second airplane had hit the towers as we were on the phone. My husband was working in St. Paul at an office that faced southeast. He watched plane after plane head into landing formation towards the airport. The airplanes in the air were simply told to land at whatever airport was nearest and the huge Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport could take a lot of traffic. The rumors began that the Sears Tower was going to be hit next and the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis, so our company told us all to go home. Out in the suburbs, my brother-in-law and nephew immediately went to donate blood when all of the eastern hospitals were gearing up for the thousands and thousands of wounded patients they were expecting. As we know, that didn't happen. I used to walk to and from work, and when we went back to work the next day, it was incredibly strange to hear the silence. No airplanes were allowed in the sky for several days and it was soooo quiet. The Sunday following the attack, church ended and people began leaving and the choir began singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic ("Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord....") and everyone just stopped in their tracks and began singing. It makes me tear up just to type this. A member of my book club made a strange statement that still haunts me. It was 6-9 months after 9/11 and she said some of her co-workers were STILL wearing small flag pins on their lapels every day. She couldn't understand it and thought that it was appropriate right after 9/11 but that enough time had passed and that people should now put that kind of thing away. Thank God people won't ever forget 9/11.

I was scheduled to appear for jury duty that morning. As I got out of my car just before 9:00 I heard a brief news report mentioning an airplane had hit the World Trade Center in NYC, I pictured one of the small sight-seeing planes that used to fly around the city. I got out and walked to the courthouse. Inside I was selected as one of the people who might have to serve on the jury, after which the lawyers get to ask questions and each excuse 3 potential jurors. One of the questions they asked which seemed quite odd at the time was "Do any of you have something going on that would prevent you from paying attention during the trial?" Another, more relevant question was "Have any of you been injured in a car accident?" since the trial was a criminal trial dealing with a driver with a suspended license who hit another car injuring the occupant of that car. I responded that I had been injured in a car accident. Probably because of that answer I was excused from serving on the jury. I left the courthouse and walked the 3 blocks to my office, and found most of my co-workers gather around a computer streaming the news reports while a few were trying to rig up an antenna on a tv so it could be used.

Lynn...I have a former classmate friend on Facebook who posted pics, too...it always looks so GRAND & like so much fun! Good to "see" you again & DH, too (partially is ok)...TFS your pics & your day! Looks like so much fun! Jeanne S.

Lynn, so sorry we missed this day with you and yours! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Looks like a fun event to attend. Enjoyed seeing all the pictures. DGD would of loved seeing Sponge Bob and I love the Haunted House and Chicken.

We would have been there for sure--but did you forget that our driver, Jane, is still recuperating???? So glad you thought about us and took all those neat pictures to share. I've seen the balloons a couple of times, but never 800 of them! That would be gorgeous. TFS. Luvs

Ronin's due at the vet's this morning for a check-up . . . and he stinks! I need to give him a shower before heading off, but will be back this afternoon to check out all the new posts and pics.

Oh, Coop, you are such a flatterer . . . and I'll take it! Wish I *could* have gotten a pic of DD but, at 16 y/o (sigh!), she decided she wasn't photographable that day ;^D . . . teenagers!

I'm not a regular but wanted to post and tell you what great pictures you got! We WERE there! We went the evening the "shapes" were lit up. I wanted to go to the a.m event but it's just to early to go to with a 3 yearold that likes her sleep. LOL!

I SO want to go back to the Fiesta. Would you believe I went to the very first International Fiesta back in 1973? I was seven. It was amazing. We went the next year, too, but then dad got transferred again and I have never made it back to ABQ. I know if I ever went back I wouldn't want to leave.

I used to have my program books from those first two years. They would probably be worth something if I could find them, But I've moved so much since then they are probably long gone.
