Advice needed for Microwave/Convection Oven such as Advantium!

Hi folks! We are building a new house and the builder includes a GE Profile PT956SMSS double oven. We'd like to replace the top one with a Microwave/Convection oven so we don't need a separate Microwave. For an upgrade to Advantium, the builder quoted me $886 additional, and the bottom oven will also need to be replaced to match the Advantium. That's a pretty steep price considering the ones they replace costs $2500-2600 already.

I have also looked into the cheaper Panasonic NN-C994S and Sharp R930 models and found it hard to imagine how they are going to look on top of a GE Profile or similar oven. KitchenAid looks nice but is also pretty expensive at $1700.

I wonder if people could share their Microwave/Convection double oven info, hopefully with pictures, and let me know how much the combination costs. I don't mind putting different brands in as long as their looks match up. By the way, I will only use the top one as a backup oven, since I don't bake much at all. So a Microwave with convection feature would do. Many, many thanks!

A double oven is a single unit that operates off of one power connection. You can't separate the two, so you're not talking about "replacing" the top unit, you're talking about replacing a single unit with two separate units. Two units will require two separate power circuits. They can't share. And you'll need a different oven cabinet designed for that configuration instead of a double oven. So, that $886 is pretty reasonable if it includes a convection single oven and an Advantium and the associated power and cabinet changes.

Thanks! That does make a lot of sense. The bottom one is just a thermal oven, not convection though.
I wonder if people have other combinations that could work. I've read some bad reviews about GE Profile ovens.

Hi, Heat isn't an issue. Reading the display is difficult if mounted low. Ditto taking dishes in and out. Your idea of 8" taller cabinet is good. Mine is mounted at 41" above floor to top of unit. Still not greatest ergonomics for use. Casey

miele speed oven is very capable but some may find the control interface too complex especially if you use it just for microwaving most of the time gaggenau doesn't have a speed oven per se, their steam combo oven is a different animal altogether panasonic and sharp both make micro/convection or speed ovens and both are very good. These 2 also make just about everyone elses too. They are also a lot cheaper then the miele or re branded offerings. can't really talk about the advantium, i don't like em for several reasons, but some around here do.

I have the Advantium Pro 240V and I use it primarily as a microwave and extra oven. It works great for that. The real deal, however, is the speed features. It combines the convection heat, microwaves and halogen (radiant) heat for speed cooking. I don't use it as often as I expected to because the reason for speed sort of dried up, but it's pretty awesome. There is a steep learning curve if you want to create your own settings, but there are also some programmed settings which you can adapt, and a recipe book which you can also use for clues. It has a pretty large (i.e. oven sized) cavity, so it's not fast to preheat, but I do use it for things analogous to your chicken fingers (like frozen appetizers), mostly because it's convenient (correct side of kitchen) and also because I think the turn table is an asset to those small things. There are sensors for things like popcorn and frozen vegetables which work very well. Since microwaves degrade over time, it's an expensive option if you use a microwave a lot. I do use the microwave settings on mine several times per day, but rarely for more than a minute or two. As a convection oven, I can get three 2 qt. casseroles on the turntable to reheat, and there's a wire rack that goes across the middle which will hold my 17" Pyrex rectangular baking dish. I don't do a lot of actual cooking in the Advantium, but it does it fine. I just have two other ovens for that.

Hi Diane, We had one installed during our home build in 2014. Pros SUPER Fast cooking/grilling of foods such as chicken fries, biscuits, French fries when you use the speed cook option. It has preset times based on food type, recipe, etc. It also allows you to save your own preset temp/time combination. Comes with 3 different plates (grill plate and flat iron plate for speed cook option, and glass plate for when used as a microwave) There are a lot of features that I probably don't use to it's full capability, but we love it. Cons It take a bit to cool down after using the speed cook option. So if you have something you want to microwave, you need to give it a few minutes PLUS you must remove the iron pan and insert the glass plate. My children (15 & 22 boys) are older, so if you have small children, you may need to help them with plate removal and insertion so as to not get burned. Cleaning is somewhat difficult only because it is a deep oven, but it all depends on what you cook. The door opens like a regular oven door and because it is located right next to the fridge( don't understand builders thought process for that), it has now left 2 dents in the fridge as the boys didn't realize the proximity. Be mindful of that. Otherwise we love it. I hope this helps.

Other than Sharp and Panasonic, I've found these that are reasonably priced:
GE Profile PEB1590SMSS - Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave Oven $559 (http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=PEB1590SMSS) - reviews are mixed. One person claims the door gets extremely hot.

Dacor DCM24 - $749 but the trim kit is pretty expensive to me $360 (http://www.dacor.com/Our-Products/Microwaves/Convection-Microwave-24.aspx)

We have had our new kitchen for about a year. We replaced a standard double wall oven with the combination of an Advantium placed above a GE Profile "single-double". The single-double is a unit which fits in the same hole as a regular single oven, but it includes two separate ovens split about 1/3 - 2/3. The larger unit is large enough for a big turkey in our roasting pan.

We love the flexibility and have had absolutely no problems. I can't recall what we paid for them.
