cass, I have never cut an X into the stem left from harvesting the head of cabbage. All I did was twist the head off and I have ranged anywhere from 1 to 6 smaller heads. Abot the time I harvest the smaller ones its at the end of the season to try and see if I can get more. Happy Gardening Mark

1. Save yourself alot of time and money by purchasing metal markers. I went thru trying to save myself money by using other items, believe me, you will toss more hostas or give them away when you can't id them. I like the paw paw type metal markers. 2. Try to buy your plants in the fall. You will see if the grower has nematodes or other diseases at that time. They may not be as pretty at that time, but they might be on sale too. 3. Make yourself a holding bed and put the new plants there if you can for a year or two. It will save yourself alot and time and effort if one or two plants turn up diseased. Other option is to keep them potted. 4. Plant more trees now so in several years you will have more places to plant. Make it a nice tree, not some maple or other fast grower with surface roots. Plant an oak for your grandchildren to enjoy.
