Local Home Depot closing

This is bad news for us. We priced all our countertops with the kitchen designer here and got a wonderul price on Wilsonart HD and our tops for the vanity in the master bath. Now they announced on Thursday that they are closing the doors. Called the store and he said nothing could be ordered and they were going to start liquidation today after being closed yesterday. Isn't that great.

I am going up to pick up his quote this morning and hopefully the manager at the store 45 minutes south of here will honor it and we can go on with things as planned.

We worked so long and hard with this fellow and I hate the thought of starting all over.

wow... that's a bummer! I never heard of a home depot closing before.. what part of the country is it, and it a very small town?

Oh.. I just did a search and found they announced 15 closing on May 1st!

Yeah, I know I don't care for Lowes here it is a smaller store and they don't carry alot of stuff. I have to drive 25 miles one way for the larger store. When Home Depot and Lowes moved in 3or 4 family owned home improvemnt/lumber yards closed here. The ones that survived found their niche, having things neither had. Plus I can go there and order parts for older Anderson windows, etc.. they had a shingle color neither had I needed 2 years ago. The other family owned hardware store chain of 9 stores survived due to their customer service and if you want one nail they will sell you one nail. Their return policy for defective stuff, is..Liz just go grab another one off the shelf. Both of these places found their niche when competiton arrived but, your right about competiton now if I want a toilet I will have a choice of one plumbing store or Lowes Any tile and bagged stone/mulch is going to be the biggie problem. that will be Lowes only for the tile, unless ordered. Bags of decroative stone/mulch will be Wally World or Lowes Wally World has been dropping alot of products I bought this past year, the employees see it and they hear the complaints and have been told the inventory is being trimmed to the highest selling items, they are afraid of the economy to have items sit in inventory

Bought 3 begonias this week. All rexes. The most colorful one that looks similar to 'Merry Christmas' was from Ace Hardware for $3.49 while the biggest silver one is from a local nursery and the highest cost ($10). The two smaller silver ones were purchased yesterday at Home Depot in a single pot for $5.93. When potting it up it divided easily (still young) so I put them into two pots. Two plants went into the larger pot and what I thought was one plant to go in a smaller pot was actually two plants as well. The two bigger plants are in 8 inch pots. Here are some pictures.

An update in the AJC: A Florida real estate development and acquisitions firm said Wednesday it has bought The Home Depot Inc.'s 11 Landscape Supply stores for $22 million. Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based Ram Realty Services said in a statement that it is evaluating the portfolio to determine which of the sites will be sold and which will be redeveloped. The sale includes five stores in the Atlanta area and six in the Dallas area. The sites range in size from 4.5 acres to 9 acres and contain a former Landscape Supply store building of about 12,000 square feet.

I've not liked Expo Design Center: They sent me a really poor lighting contractor and wouldn't send a different person when there was a problem (said they had to give the original guy a chance--jeez). And it was always hard finding a salesperson. It's just as hard finding a salesperson at the regular Home Depot stores. But in my neck of the woods, if I needed to go to one, there are at least 4 within 30 minutes. Maybe if they shut one of those and moved the workers to the other stores, I wouldn't have to wander around following a salesperson to be next in line for his/her help! Today, counting the Home Depot news, about 46,000 jobs were lost--GM, Pfeizer/Wyeth drugmaker merger, Caterpillar, Sprint/Nextel all announced that they are laying off. 46,000. The numbers are just getting worse every day. How much worse before we see the light at the end of the tunnel?

Bad news re your countertops but don't panic... it could be good news for you overall if you're able to pick up other things you need for your home at discount prices during their liquidation.

About 15 or 20 years ago when Handy Dan (I think that was what it was called) went out of business in our area we picked up all kinds of goodies at amazing prices that we used for remodeling our current home. Eg., 52-inch Hunter ceiling fans, brass light fixtures to go with the fans, Moen all brass plumbing fixtures; ceramic floor tile for the laundry room and bathrooms; Bruce hardwood flooring, a new kitchen sink, gallons and gallons of paint, new exterior doors, etc, all at prices that were about 25-50% of their normal price. Saved us a bundle.

Maybe you'll get lucky and the store 45 miles away will honor quote AND you'll be able to take advantage of the liquidation of your local store to save on other stuff you need. Could work out to be a blessing in disguise for you.

We just came from HD. They have 10-30 percent off today.
Picked up backer board for our tile floors, adhesive,
door hardware and stain for a good price. The place was a madhouse. Too bad some of those shoppers weren't there before they decided to close, maybe it wouldn't have happened. I am sure we will be back for more items in the next week or two.
By the way, this one is in Lima, Ohio.
