Snow and More Halloween Decorations (photos)

I thought I'd start a new post rather than dig out the old one, as it was rather long already. It's been a busy couple of weeks around here, and our party is on Saturday. Hubby and I are off work this week to get things all finished up and ready...

Last weekend, we were hit with our first snowstorm of the year, and ended up with 2 feet by the time it was over with on Monday. Needless to say, with leaves still on most of the trees, branches came down all over the place. This is what our backyard looked like on Saturday:

And then our truck on Sunday, 24 hours later:

This is why I couldn't start decorating the front yard last weekend:

The snow was all gone by Thursday, and Saturday we spent the better part of the day cleaning up branches and hauling them to be chipped up into mulch by the city.

So we finally got to start decorating outside starting Saturday night.

Here's what the area those branches were in looks like now in the daytime:

I don't have a good night shot of that side yet, because all the lights aren't up (that's one of today's projects). I think it's coming along well so far though...

I also got the webbing and blacklight done in the Captain's Quarters yesterday:

And we finished the Crew's Quarters as well (not so many decorations, because it's our pool room, and people will be playing pool in there for the party):

Today, I need to finish the lighting outside, finish our treasure chest in the Captain's Quarters, finish the bar, and get ready to start on the upstairs bathroom and kitchen. More pictures later! :-)

Totally amazing--both all that snow and your fantastic decorations. Aren't you afraid your graveyard might end up under another blanket of snow? Sure hope not, cause I just know your guests are going to love it all. Your pirate captain really looks creepy with that lighting, and I love the skeleton crew in their hammocks! LOL

Thanks for sharing Jaime, you are sure doing a fantastic job.

JEAN....I had the same thing happen to me just now! I had replied to all of you and hit 'preview' and then it froze up then went blank. I couldn't retrieve what I wrote so I had to start all over. Frustrating. Anyhow, yes those are sunflowers in that barn scene. I thought they looked so pretty with the fall foliage. DEBRA....it was above freezing today and sunny so the snow is doing some melting. In the shady areas there is still about a foot but at least it's shrinking. All my plants are flattened out like pancakes from the heavy, wet snow. LINDA....I still have no clue what happened to Lily. When I found her outside sleeping under a rosebush she couldn't get up, like her hind feet were paralyzed. She walks fine now and is eating and acting normal other than she just wants to sleep a LOT. She doesn't even go to the door to be let out and she always hated to stay inside before. GINNY...you are probably right. I think Lily is getting near the end...she is really slowing up and has gotten so skinny. I feel comforted to know she has had a great life with us. We saved her as a flea-infested kitten that nobody wanted 13 yrs. ago. FLOWERGIRL...I went in to check on Lily who was sleeping on my mom's bed all day. When I looked around the room there she was up on the toy shelf between the stuffed lions. I had to take a picture because it was so cute! As sick as she was she made me smile. PAM...Thank you! AVEDON...The stones in that graveyard are from the late 1700's to mid-1800's so yes, they are very old. Some are so old you can barely make out the names and dates. KAY...Larissa still looks the same today as she did when I took the photo of her last week. You could never tell she went through a snowstorm or that it gets down into the teens and twenties at night. Leaves are still bright green and buds are slowly unfurling. This is a hard rose to find...I ordered mine from Palatine Roses in Canada. It's one of my toughest, prettiest and healthiest roses, and has the longest bloom cycle. Sharon....I was glad to hear from someone in the same situation as me, caring for Mom. She is 88. She has advanced Alzheimers, is legally blind and has had both hips replaced. I hope you visit this forum more often! Rita...I'm so glad you didn't get dumped on in the storm. There are still folks here in parts of NH that still don't have power. It is much too cold at night to be without power so I feel badly for them. I have heard that it will warm up here too so we are looking forward to that to melt what's left of the snow. Celeste

Plastic bottle, unfortunately. Although glass would be harder to mail. I kind of have to divorice myself from my attempts to avoid plastic during Halloween, or I'd just go nuts with all the stuff we couldn't do. It is recyclable though... There's about 1 tablespoon of sand inside (with a few drops of water, shaken up to keep it from sticking to the bottle), with 5 tiny seashells, and a little plastic sword. Then you roll and tie the invitation with ribbon that's long enough to stick between the cork and the bottle. The cork is pushed in really, really tightly, and they just go right through the mail like that! I put stamps on them...they are under 2 oz each, so they cost $1.34 each to mail. Here's what the invitations read this year - printed on parchment paper, of course: *********************** Get Shipwrecked on Treasure Island at our 5th Annual Halloween Bash! Ahoy, Mateys! Put on your best (or worst) pirate garb, and sail over to our haunted island on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 7:00pm for food, fun, and buried treasure. Follow the enclosed map to find our island Â "X" marks the spot! Pirates only Â all others will be captured and forced to walk the plank! Ship assignments will begin at 8:00pm, the treasure hunt starts immediately after. LOL,"Witch causes catfight in aisle #__" I think the members of this forum are kindred spirits and we do like the same things!! Soooo, maybe we couldn't go shopping together, but it sure would be fun to decorate together!! We could spend a day at each others houses and laugh and talk, and put our decorations out and then move on to the next house. Wouldn't that be fun!!!! I don't care for the gory, gruesome, gross Halloween dÃÂ©cor, but I do enjoy the cute witches, spiders, ghosts, and Jack O'Lanterns. No dripping blood, skulls, skeletons, or tombstones for me (well, I did put some little skulls in one of my potion jars, but that was it!!!) Karen, I hope you found your energy! A hot garage, wow. It was only 65 here today and I played golf in a Girls Night Out event and it was downright chilly!! It didn't start until 5:00 and by then it was in the 50's. I was not dressed warmly enough since I was wearing an outfit I wore to work, so it was a long evening, plus most of the women are not really into golf and they stand around and discuss every shot and take forever. I was playing with some friends who are tennis players and only took up golf a few years ago, so they analyze every shot. I don't think I'll be doing that again. I'm looking forward to seeing your posts when you get your dÃÂ©cor up!! Punk, I have a couple of other teacup holders, but they weren't really what I wanted. This was it, so I'm thrilled. SD, thanks. I think that is why I enjoy thrift stores so much. The adrenalin rush when I find a great score!! One of my best finds was a Louis Vuitton purse in a GdWl outside a very ritzy part of town. It looked like it might have been used once and when I got home, I found the exact same purse on Ebay for $650!!! I paid $39.99!! Jane, the new witch will be joining another cute one I found last year. The only thing wrong with the new one was she was missing a couple of rhinestones on her shoes. Thanks ladies, Candy

Candy, how cool that you have the boots in hot pink! I really think the clear glass would have been better to use as it's bigger. I think the skull is a little too large for the crackled glass and I needed something on top of it to disguise the fact that the top is flat. Jane, that Jack is quite bright, isn't it! I think it's all the orange inside reflecting. Almost hurts to look at it. Nana, I think Lisette and Lucinda need to meet up! In fact, I need to meet Lucinda...is she posted here somewhere? Frou, the boots were a TS find a couple of weeks ago. I actually left them sitting in the store 2 different times. After leaving the second time, I turned right around and went back to get them. I only paid $2.99 for them and they really look like they've never been worn at all. Jeanne, considering some of the decorating I've seen here, my contributions are pathetic! Until coming here, I never really decorated for anything except Christmas. I'm slowly getting "stuff" to decorate for other seasons and holidays. You know, it's all these Enablers here...sometimes you just have to go with the flow. LOL Luvs, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem! It's just so glaring though as I have alot of pink and roses type of stuff. Then you see all the fall colors...sort of jarring to the senses. I've decided I'm going to do the same thing - just not worry about it. Punk, I agree! Candy's table was a pure pleasure to look at.

LOL..and I was posting pictures the other day of our 'Frost'...lolol !!! Wow, you got hit good. That happened here in the NE, in Oct, about 20 yrs ago. Same thing, with the leaves still on the trees, the snow, destroyed many tree limbs and brought down loads of power lines..and was just a plain mess. Glad you got a reprieve real quick though, to put out your decorations. I love how you set it all up. Between the inside and out, you are good to go..hope you enjoy it all.. I know your guests will. Great stuff.

and that snow is mind-boggling! Here I'm complaining about the endless summer, its still in the mid 90s this week. I guess I better remind myself I don't have to shovel sunshine.

Thanks, all! :-) We're getting more frantic here as the big day approaches...working like fiends to get everything done! We're going to have more people than anticipated, so I'm scurrying around trying to make extra gift bags, make sure we have enough glassware and paper plates out, etc...

It normally doesn't snow here so early - usually our first snow is right around Halloween itself. The weather forecast is mild through the weekend though (50's/60's), so we're good for the party, at least. Excellent, actually, since some of our treasure hunt clues can be outside with good weather.

pdg777 - Normally I love snow...but this one was just sort of "in our way", and then also brought a lot of work with it cleaning everything up, so it put us behind a couple days. I'll like it better if it happens in November, after all of our decorations are put away and we aren't trying to plan a big party! :-)

Karen, we have a pirate hanging over part of our "bar" that looks very similar to that one! :-)

We're pretty well finished in the basement, and I'm working on the dining room tonight. I'll post a few more pictures tomorrow morning...we've only got one more day to work on it before Saturday, so gotta keep plugging away (and I have to get my nails done tonight too!).

Snow... snow is for me the most frightening as well as chilling thing (your first pic is a great example)! Fortunately, seasons are turning wrong here so, we seldom have the advantage of having to deal with snow.
