Blue Star event in Santa Monica last night

A few weeks ago, simply by virtue of being on an email list at BlueStar, I received an invite to a cooking demo by Marcus Samuelsson in a home in Santa Monica, CA. It was fun. I don't eat animals so I only got to try a couple side dishes, but it was great to watch him and a somewhat large crew at work while he talked about the value of cooking on stove that performs like that. And I finally got to see one in action - pretty impressive flame. I've been heading towards a Capital, but after last night I'm swaying seriously.

In the foyer of the house sat an "Inspired by Marcus" version of one of the ranges, all in copper, and we left with gift bags containing a great new cookbook of his and a nice catalog. A very impressive demo by BlueStar.

I ate the seared ahi tuna,fried chicken, and super jumbo prawns.

I love to eat animlas whether they run,swim,or slither.

Strawberry/cranberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream was not bad either.

The red wine was drinkable.

Babka, you had me roaring with laughter painting that image! LOL. Regardless, you have beautiful surroundings, from every angle! LOL It was a treat to see some of your plants (white pots) and the way you had them displayed. It looked lovely....and I understand why you would remove the pics after a time. Thanks very much for the welcome! I am really excited and looking forward to being part of this little group in 2007. Maryanne/earthly, I am so pleased that you remember me and still have some of the items I sent you in 2005. I was involved heavily in the Round Robin Exchange that year, and at the end of the year, I was just burned out! I needed to take the year off. But now I'm back and raring to go! Actually, one reason why I joined is because, after the Christmas I just had, I needed a little pick-me-up. This was basically the year without a Christmas. I got sick with the flu the week before Christmas, but we still decided to go down to visit my DS in Pennsylvania. BUT on Christmas morning at about 5:30 a.m., the cell phone awakened us with the news that my MIL had been found by the neighbors the night before collapsed on her kitchen floor. She'd had a stroke and was in the hospital. My DH is British, and so of course, MIL lives in England. So......we had to spend Christmas day driving home from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts, so that DH could pick up his passport and book a flight home to England. Christmas dinner was a McDonald's chicken sandwich and fries at a rest stop on I-95. Anyway, DH is still there and I'm home alone. She's in her 80s, so the prognosis is for only a limited recovery. Well, that's my sad story, sorry it's such a downer. You all have so much fun on this exchange board, I thought joining would be just the pick-me-up I need! Alison

Monica, Paula, Deb-Godsgardener, Theresa---wow, beautiful gardens, thank you for sharing your pictures. Theresa, you know your pics could make great Christmas cards or have they already? Deb, I'm saving your site, wish I was there at least in time for some lucious grapes, love em, all those tomatoes and roses, pink clematis, beautiful. No pictures yet, sort of poor-woman's garden, bird bath made from 4 cement blocks put together, holding a bottom tray from a large flower pot, refilled daily, gathering place for many critters besides the birds, platform bird feeder reinforced with clothes hanger wire---witholds the coons, always can see birds and butterflies, occasional stray cat...and most of the flowers still in bloom, guess our rewards for bad summers. Love those pictures and must run- just saw mailman pull over, smile. Bea WISHING BRIGHTNESS (have lots of the words stashed)

Here I am again, for those of you who might still be interested: Yesterday morning, at 7:20AM, the service contractors came back to fix the problem I had with my simmer burner. It is one month since I first called Bluestar about the problem. They agreed to do the repair even though it was more than a year since I had purchased and installed my range. They called back promptly, answered all my questions and sent the service company out without delay. When the first team couldn't correct the problem another part was ordered and in a few weeks I was called to make an appointment. I was offered an earlier appointment but I wasn't going to be available for that time so another time/date was offered, which was yesterday morning at 8. I was called to confirm on Friday afternoon, and called yesterday at 7:15 to be warned that the men would be at my house in 5 minutes. The team included one guy who had come the first time around and another, who said he was the service supervisor. I didn't hover this time around, (it was before my first cup of coffee.) But I know they changed the ceramic igniter, opened and made some adjustment under the front panel, switched positions of the 2 rear burners (my request for which I agreed to pay $75), switched the gas nozzles (I know that is not the right term but its all I can think of calling those right now) so that the BTUs were correct for the switched burners, and adjusted all the flames. The stove is working like a charm. There's no more clicking, the simmer burner simmers and all the burners have a full flame range. They also tightened one of the knobs, that has recently begun to slip off. It is all good. I now have the pro-style range I have always wanted, and just in time for a houseful on Thanksgiving (20+ family and friends). There will be 2 turkeys, all the usual sides, more pies and cakes than we can possibly eat and some decent wine and beer to wash it all down. Hurrah! Thanks for listening. I am quite satisfied with the response I got from the people at Bluestar and the local service company.

If all you're going to cook is vegetables, save your money and buy any old budget stove.

I think it is nice to have high BTU's for stir fry, even when my stir fry is vegetarian!

Very high BTU for wok cooking and as importantly, very low and stable BTU for things like rice, sauces, etc. There are a few things that could be said about the somewhat elitist and quite defensive idea that a good stove is only useful for searing muscle fiber or stewing the marrow out of bones, but they wouldn't be very polite, nor would such an idea be taken seriously in restaurants that don't serve animal parts, of which there are many, even in the US.

Do they have Blue Stars on display anywhere in LA? I think I saw one briefly at Snyder Diamond in SM, but they weren't big fans and at the time (early on in my research), I did not like the black burners. Now that I see my friends' stainless burners that are all dirty and gross, I see the benefits of black!

I stopped by Snyder Diamond again today (they have a whole new display area with a bunch of wolfe and subzero stuff). They still have the same Blue Star range sitting there. It's a nice looking range, but wow, standing at it I feel like I really should be cooking in a restaurant or something. Not sure if those burners are for me. Though, I'm curious about the drop in cooktop... ever seen one of those in a store?
