I had to go up to the house today to meet with the painter on the colors. I was up over the weekend, but they hadn't finished the primer by then. Now it's done, and I just love, love, love my house. :)

Here's my view, and the link is to more photos of how it all looks right now. It's kind of funny, it looks like a blank canvas now, just waiting to be created.

I just love, love, love your house too! It's turning out so beautiful! That is our dream to build in Hawaii some day. You are one lucky duck!

Faux finishes in general are not my favorite thing and the finishes that use red almost always end up looking cheap IMO. Professionally done finishes can be a different story but even then it depends on what and who is involved. Lots of times you'll read color info on websites and in books and whatnot and often you'll see a caption that goes something like "the top three biggest color mistakes designers and homeowners make". That's a color sound bite crafted to get your attention. The info that follows, for the most part, is a collection of more empty color sound bites with no substance or explanation behind them. i.e. The big mistakes they cite will be along the line of mixing warm and cool colors, or mixing clear and muted color, or missing and not using the color tip that directs people to use the background color from the main fabric, etc. Those aren't big color mistakes if not adhered to or followed. All of those are simply color design choices. No more, no less. And a top three or five or six or whatever list doesn't even (it can't) begin to explain with any substance what those design choices are or can mean or how maybe they can work in certain situations. Fundamentally, however, I do think there are real "mistakes" that can be made. And this post is a good example and I hope you don't mind, aok, if I elaborate on what I'm talking about. It comes down to trying to make color fit a room instead of fitting a room with color. Placing color design "rules", color schemes, or colorways from elements like fabrics and rugs at the forefront in place of considerations of the three dimensional space to be painted is the only true color mistake one can make. You have a very large, bright master bath. No surprise it can wear a color like deep cranberry. The water closet, however, is not very large and bright. It's a different three dimensional space with differenct characteristics. It needs to relate to the color scheme as it is a part of the master bath, but structurally it is its own space. A bigger or different light bulb would be more like a band-aid, not a real solution because the room has not gotten the fundamental consideration it needs. The other thing is tolerance. Others could paint the smaller water closet deep cranberry and love it. You've done that and it feels, to you, like you're inside a blood vessel. A deep cranberry in the smaller space of the water closet does not suit your color tolerance and preference. So between the needs of the space and your tolerance and despite the *color scheme*, you need different color options. The water closet doesn't have to "match" anything. It is a separate space. As long as it relates and creates an interesting sightline, you have more color options. Your first idea of a medium gray is a good one; it could be enough without ragging red over it. If a medium gray is a part of the adjoining space but doesn't thrill you, another option is to use that medium gray on which to base a short color chip search. Pull gray chips that are lighter to much lighter in value than the existing medium gray. The walls done in a gray would be much less light absorbing than red or any combo of red + gray. You could then add in cranberry and white accents to keep to your desire to have the color scheme repetitive and cohesive from the larger portion of the master bath to the water closet.

We probably have! He had a lot of family visiting from NY last year, so we had to do all the touristy things. I went to The dang Stockyards more last year than in the past 15 years combined! It is kind of fun seeing it all through other's eyes, though. :) Mmmmm, love that kitchen! And the rug. ;-)

Will white walls go with Cream Trim?

In the process of finishing my kitchen in an open concept. The trim is cream and we chose a lighter cabinet. I keep flip flopping back and forth between painting the trim the same colour as the cabinets I'll send pics when complete. I think because your floor has warmer tones that your moulding matches that and the white walls look

The radiators you have now seem pretty inoffensive and are nearly flush to the wall. The "covers" you've pictured are much more substantial and obtrusive. I think a greater concern would be that the air passages seem very small and restrictive. Those, together with a wooden top (stone is more typical, in Europe for example) can only limit the airflow and effectiveness of the radiators. I think you'll find this room will be colder, with the warm air trapped inside the "cover".

Coming along girl! I know you've said before but which island are you on? Absolutely beautiful.
FYI...I "LOVE" your porch. To me porches are a very necessary part of the home. They're so inviting! When we started our design DH had his "needs" and I had my "NEED", which was a porch the goes the full length of the back of our house.

kats, I'm on Kauai. And I agree, the porch (we call them lanais here) was VERY important. I did the floor plan and the layout for the deck, and gave all that to the architect. So he had to design the roof to fit the deck. :) It's 8 ft wide in front of the living room, 6 ft wide in front of my bedroom, and wraps around three sides of the house. It's ipe wood, and my GC is talking about just letting it go gray, but it's so gorgeous I'm thinking about trying to keep it up (per John Hiatt's instructions in the deck forum!).

I'd appreciate feedback on painting the deck railing and house. I've got one color and a trim color. The painter is recommending only the pillars get painted the trim color, and the rest of the railings be painted the same as the house. I don't like that idea, and think that at least the top of the handrail should be painted the trim color (which is an off white, the house will be a sagey green). I know the red dirt here is going to be a challenge, but I don't think it will look right if the entire railing is painted the same color as the body of the house.

What does anybody else think about that????

Wow! Your house is absolutely amazing. Truly an island paradise!
We're considering using ipe as well for our decking. It IS a beautiful wood. I definitely want to keep the coloring of it.

Do you think I can grow a mango tree in MT? :)

It's coming right along! I love the outside. It's nice to see a style of home being built - not one on the mainland - since they are so different. When do you expect to move?

So, the pics on your photobucket are showing that your house is not painted yet right? Cause actually it looks kind of cool like it is. But, doing a house sage and the trim white is also very earthy and should look nice, though you might be cussing that red dirt after awhile. As for doing the pillars white and the railings the sage color, I'm with you... tell the painter no.

Hi kats, yes, you're right, it's not painted yet. My neighborhood imposes constraints on the colors, I had to pick something that was "earth" toned (which seemed to me to be a fairly broad definition). Funny you mention it, but I don't think I've ever seen a board and batten house here that is NOT painted.

Allison, the board and batten style is the predominant building style of home here. The house across the street from me was on the market for $2.9 million, and it's board and batten. Considering the termite population we have here, it's curious that wood is the predominant building material. There actually are no places making bricks as you know them on the mainland. If I had wanted to go with brick (which I thought about, but the budget wouldn't take it), I would have had to use cinder blocks that were molded to look like brick on one side.

Our house was originally designed to be stained board and batten, but we didn't want to fight the carpenter bees. What I meant was the Hawaiian style home - not sure if there is another name - is different; from the covering underneath the porch, the roof slope, just the shape in general - if that makes sense.

It's what they call a "Dickey" roof, based on the Honolulu architect who popularized it. I'll put a link to a little article on it at the bottom of this. You find it on a lot of older houses, and when the Hyatt was built here in 1990 with one, all of the upper end houses started using them again. It's actually very practical given our weather.

What a beautiful house, but house is not the word that comes to mind when I first looked at it, motor lodge or hotel came to mind. If I'm not being too nosey, how big is that house? Of course I love those porches. Just beautiful. Can't wait to see the entire thing finished.
