Seal Honed Marble Tile Before or After Grouting?

Happy Friday to all...

I can't seem to find a good consensus on this question, so I thought I would poll the resident tile experts here. Should we seal our Honed Calacatta Oro tile before or after we grout?

On the one hand, if we seal before, it seems like we'll protect the marble from being discolored by the grout and make it easier to clean the grout off the tile.

On the other hand, if we seal after, we can seal the grout at the same time.

Mongo and Bill, do you have a view? Anyone who has used stone tile, what did you do? Thanks so much for all help.

If this is a DIY project, it'd be a good idea to seal prior to grouting, and then you can seal it again when you go to seal the grout , as well. If you have a pro doing it, let him do it his way. Voice your concerns, and if he still wishes to grout first, then let him. I know personally I prefer to grout unsealed, with very few exceptions.

I agree with Bill.

Sealing prior to grouting can be a pain, but sometimes it's less painful than the alternative.

Depends on how much game you got. ; )

Well, that's good (it doesn't make any difference) - I went ahead and sealed it first. The changes of plane I'll caulk in a a few days. I've got to paint the ceiling and non-tiled walls first of course. This has been a very drawn-out project, it's exciting to have it this close to completion.

Ditto. My contractor did what chispa’s did. Especially with marble tiles, you want to protect them, before grouting. Then, seal again, including the grout, afterwards. Marble is very porous. It stains and etches, and grouting is messy business.
