I think the traditional thing, if you're going for a classic look, is a white hex tile, maybe with accents, or a marble basketweave. Sometimes with a lovely border accent...

I have Vermont White quartzite in my daughter's bathroom, with Calacatta marble accent tiles. I had a hard time picking the flooring. I knew I didn't want to use real natural stone since this is a high-traffic bathroom. And my daughter absolutely vetoed the white hex tile (also our house isn't "vintage" enough to really support that look...) I also didn't want a uniform ceramic tile which would show every bit of dirt and hair. I was really worried about mixing a "faux" stone-look ceramic with the REAL stone on the counter and niches.

However, I am sooooo happy with the choice!! I used American Olean Costa Rei in "Petra Bianco" (limestone look) but it comes in other colors/patterns. It looks great.

I can't post a picture yet, but we used Daltile City View in Harbor Mist which is basically a light sand ivory color. It looks a lot like Staceyneil's picture but with even less movement.

we are in the middle of our master bath remodel but we're FAR from done. i thought i'd post anyway, just to give another idea. We are doing Slate floors and white Statuary (Carrara) marble.

I do not have pictures of the installed floor, but I used Daltile Navelli Carrera Star porcelain tile with a carrera marble countertop.

I also just installed Ostrich Gray Slate / Quartzite tile in a powder room and laundry room. (Sorry again, no pictures.) I am considering adding a carrera marble or super white quartzite countertop, which I think would look fantastic with the dark charcoal / silver / black tile.

I think mixing the stones, either natural or artificial, makes each area "pop" a little more on it's own. I love that contrast you have going on Fauve01.

I had a hard time convincing my wife that contrast was good, until we came upon a setup in a local tile shop that used almost exactly what my proposed renovatoin was, right down to the bath cabinets. We are now using some materials she wouldn't even look at when I tried to stop her and get her to look. Go figure.

We're still in the middle of it, obviously, but here is our Emser tile in style Moda, color Perla, w/our Athens Silver marble countertops from Ann Sacks.

There will be large marble tiles in the shower as well, to balance out the Emser gray that's already in there.

You can't see the marble well here, it's really quite distinctive; but here's the overall effect (there will be marble on that side wall inside the shower you see to the left there):

Our counter is a white granite not marble, but the colors and tones are quite similar. We used daltile fabrique in blanc linen. Our vanity is dark stained to provide contrast.

I am installing white cabinets with carrera marble counter..in one bath the floor is a 12 x 12 grey slate colour porcelain for durability and least maintenance..the other bath will be white hex tile...4 or 5 inch if I can find it :)
