Patio door height for 9' ceiling master bedroom

My master bedroom addition has a nine foot ceiling with trimming. Not sure if I should use a 8' or 6'8" patio door. Will the standard 6'8" patio door look too small? I think 8' door looks great but there may not have enough space for window treatment.

Besides, the addition is 14 x 14 (excluding master bathroom), is a 10' four panel sliding patio door too big? My bed is facing the door (northeast). Please advice.

Definitely the 6'8 or a 7'. An 8' will leave you very little room between the moulding and ceiling. You have to factor trim around the doors into the equation as well. Is this a traditional or contemporary build? If you hang window treatments (i.e., drapes), they need to be hung just below the molding, or so the experts say :) This enlongates the windows and looks great. There are some differing rules if you are doing a valance and have higher than 9' ceilings, but with 9' you should hang below the molding for sure.

As far as the 10' patio door - hard to say without a plan. I love the idea of a wall of windows, but would have to see it in plan form to see what other space you have. I must say though we were at the Wynn in Vegas a few years ago and one of my favorite things was the wall of windows across from the bed (the curtains were on remote!). Beautiful view and if you have this it might work great!

I would do 6'8" or 7'. We have a 10' wide unit of french door in our master and it's also 14' wide. Our ceilings are 10' and our doors are 8'.

Second, try to get a king size mattress or a large chest of drawers through only one leaf of a double door set. I would not try. I would simply open the other half. ;-) We have had double doors in previous homes and they are not difficult to use, but they mostly stay open. We are building a new home and will have double entry doors into our bedroom. Our opening is 36", but I wish we could have made them wider. Good news is that we rarely close our bedroom door. Closets will have the same double door widths. They only get closed when company is coming. The entrance to our bathroom has a pocket door. That will only be used if one of us is sleeping (it's DH) and the other wants to go ahead and get ready for the day (me.) There is a full door leading into the powder room of our bathroom that gets closed often.

Isn't it great how we like different styles? How boring if we all wanted exactly the same thing! We have a tray ceiling in our Master Bedroom and love it. We have a 4-poster bed too (with tall posts), so I appreciate your concern. Our upstairs has 9 ft ceilings, so our architect's solution was to cut into the attic space for the tray. The tray can start its "rise" from as far away from the walls as need be. (Allows for crown moulding too.) As an aside, I wouldn't want to cut into trusses, regardless of the cost, without getting an engineering evaluation of the structural implications. Good luck! With even a little space above your ceiling, it seems like it should be very possible to create a tray.
