12 inch hood... 15 inch cabinet.... how do we do it?

Hi Everybody!

My husband and I are trying to figure out what hood to get. We just ordered a 36" BS cooktop. It seems as though all of the hoods I have found have a depth of 12". Problem is, we have a 15" cabinet over head. How do we make it work? My husband says just put a flat piece of SS between the hood and the wall. This seems so anti-aerodynamic. Is this okay? Also I know there is an ideal height for the hood, but not sure what it is. Can somebody advise me so I can steer my husband in the right direction? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same situation in my kitchen. Counters are 30" deep with upper cabinets above that are 15" deep. The Vent-a-Hood range hood was pulled out 3" from the back wall to align with the upper cabinets. A 3" filler was inserted between the back wall and the range hood. It's actually a sort of squared "U" shaped filler. The back flange on the filler is attached to the back wall with screws. The front flange on the filler is riveted to the back of the range hood to hold it securely in place. You can see the finished installation in the photo below (notice the two rivets at one end, to the left of the blower assembly). My range hood is 48" wide, mounted 27" above a 36" gas cooktop.

Thank you! Did you have the filler piece custom made for you? Or was it something I could buy pre-made?

This is a job for a table saw. If you have a woodworking store around your area (independent, Rockler, or Woodcraft), they can probably lead you to a craftsman, furniture repair shop, furniture maker, or cabinet shop who could do this for you. The major problem might be matching the finish from the original to freshly cut wood.

And just for the record....it can be added to as well (but in the middle of a run casey's idea is much better!!) I had a 15" deep cabinet with exposed sides turned into an 18" deep cabinet. It's nearly invisable (if I tell people where to look they see it, but normally no one can tell). But it was a bit pricy. Not as expensive as a new cab would have been (it was an antique and solid walnut) but it can be done by a professional. Again....no need in your case but I thought i'd share. FYI

We haven't installed the hood yet, but I have worked on the plan. I am thinking of a 22" deep hood built out from the wall by 7", for a total depth of 29". I did some geometry to arrive at a good combination of 1. non head banging 2. good smoke capture. The above would be a non-standard installation height however I think it would work best in our case. This is discussed in painful detail in my thread below. Something to be aware of is that the higher the hood is mounted, the louder it will sound. You could see how this works by lowering your head beside an operating hood. I would mark off the interior space on a flat surface (consider if your face frames to block part of the access). Put the stuff you want to store in the taped off area to give you a better idea of what might fit. You might only get one stack of bowls there, and maybe 3 columns of glasses. In my old kitchen, I had a corner cabinet with an angled door that was maybe 15". I used it for glasses. There was plenty of space in the cabinet, but the door really limited access and I hated it. If possible, consider a drawer for smaller spices or else they will be buried behind one another and difficult to locate and access.

The filler was fabricated locally by the same shop that fabricated the stainless backsplash behind the cooktop.
