Your owm Web site?

Do any of you have their own web site w/ domain name? I'm thinking of getting my own domain name and a 5 page web site. It's going to cost me $20 US a month. Is there anything I should know before I shell out any money? This will be my own Web address and not a web page on a site.

Steve, I have my own website. My isp gives me 100 mb of webspace. I made a webpage using some of my space for a friend who had an antique shop. For $8.95 a year I bought a domain name for her. Actually I guess it was more of a forwarding service. You could type in www.cackleberries-antiques.com and it would go to her site, but the address in the address bar was my address. Anyway, wasn't bad for such a cheap price. She went out of business so I gave up the domain name.
I have lots of pages now for myself and my son and still haven't come close to using the 100 mb of space!

Our GE microwave transformer/magnatron caught fire and filled our home with thick black noxious smoke. It was only about 2 years old! It was scary, were were lucky the breaker turned it off because it wouldn't turn off!!! If this happened to you call Contact Consumer Product Safety division, Consumer product Safety commission, in our area the phone number is 631 724-0154, also call Underwriters Labratories, and document it on "bringgoodthingstolife.org Make sure it says .org not .com. Because ge just sent us from department to department an "didn't notifiy the proper department" after a few days they will finely realize you are not going away if you keep calling, then they will send you to their Electric insurance, then you will get a call from their attorney asking you questions, beware tell him to you have to consult an attorney before you say anything. Then Samsung who actually made the microwave, their insurance Chubb will contact you, thats when it goes from bad to worse. Our fire was on Dec 24th, 2010, Chubb accepted restoration January 5th, 2011. I found out I should have just gone through my homeowners because GE just bounces you around and around and around. I should have called an attorney and Consumer Product Safety right away. Any one looking to buy a microwave should google GE Microwave class action, GE micowave law suit, GE micowave follow it by either defect, malfunction, transforer fire, magnatron fire.

It took a year for me to decide to make a website just for Gary. I first made a site of photos of my flowers and it grew. Then I made another using old family photos that my nephew had scanned, just to entertain family members. It was simply busy work to get through the first anniversary and to learn just how everything worked. Then I finally made the 'real' website. I deliberately chose not to use last names or a lot of personal information. The peculiar thing is, I didn't show any of it to DH until a month after it was finished. I've noticed that on my server, looking over the websites of others, that many people start a website and then either lose interest or forget how to go back. Be sure to write down any URL for the site and ALL passwords. A little prompt or two on what you're doing might be a good thing to write down, too. The good thing about the websites that have 'templates' is that you can easily delete and add at will if you change your mind. An easy way to start is to decide on a title for the page or pages, then write out a little text. Choose a couple of photos and get going!

Yep. We simply go out to dinner to a nicer restaurant than our usual places. No gifts. It is SO nice and relaxing. Of course, we have to do it three times, because my parents are divorced. But still, it's a lot nicer and there's no additional clutter in our houses.

Do a lot of comparison shopping there are some really good deals out there.

It is very nice having your own domain. You get the email addresses you like and I have quite a bit of fun with my website.

I use www.hostings.com they have several package deals and I've been very happy with them over the last 3 years.

I think you can find something for alot cheaper than $20 a month, there are some for $7.95 a mo.

Hi SteveC -- The reason most people get their own .com is to appear to the public as a legitimate business or organization. In the business world someone using a "free" site isn't looked at as very serious - don't want to ruffle any feathers but that's how business people view them. And $20 per month sound average. I pay more. If it's a true business, then that $20 is a business expense toward advertising, etc. And realize you get what you pay for still holds true in computer service - so check them out. HTH :0)
