Questions About A Clawfoot Tub

John Liu

Hi, two questions on a clawfoot bathtub.

We have a, you guessed it, clawfoot bathtub. It has a shower head, lots of valves, I like it. However, to enable showering, it has a wrap around curtain hanging from an oval rod affixed to the ceiling. Very old fashioned, kind of charming, but a bit of a pain.

I was visualizing a clear glass or acrylic shower surround that would basically replace the curtain. Suspended from the ceiling, cones down to meet the tub's rim, part of hinged to open up for entry/exit and to let you reach your wineglass during long soaking sessions.

Has anyone seen such a thing? I've searched and can find no pictures of anything like this.

The other thing is, getting in and out requires a certain ability to balance and step over the tall rim. Older folks, like my mother in law when she visits, are unhappy about this. I was thinking about installing a handrail, that would bolt to the ceiling and extend down - sort of like the straphanger on a subway car, but rigid. Has anyone seen anything like that?
