need help with appliances ordering tomorow

Hi,

i am about to order all appliances for my kitchen reno. We are ordering KFGS306VSS kitchen aid cook top with 30 inch vent for our island. the granite fabricator just pointed out the out island cabinet is 22 inches ( may be 22.5) inches in depth. It has a 1 inch board in front and back to complete the look. Is this standard will we be able to fit the cooktop and pop up vent here? please help.

Math says no. You need a 20X29-inch hole cut for the cooktop alone. If you are thinking about putting in a pop-up downdraft behind the cooktop you will have to modify your island considerably. btw, the performance of pop-up downdrafts is not good. If you can put in an island style hood 36" wide you will get far more effective ventilation than you ever will with a downdraft.

I really suggest that you delay ordering anything until you have a complete grasp of what your maximum dimensions may be to fit the cabinetry and counters or have made suitable modifications to your specs if the cabinetry isn't in yet..

It won't work. In more ways than one. It won't physically fit into your cabinet, and even if you do a custom cabinet to fit in the downdraft, it won't really work to ventilate your cooking well.

Don't worry about the mix and match - check out the Finished Kitchens Blog - many of us mix finishes and handles and everything looks fine. A caution about the Dacor 30" DW. They took them off the market for a while because of problems - I guess they're back now - the issue is that if you need to replace it, there's nothing else that will fit.

I personally think of mixing appliances like I think of mixing jewelry. Given the right setting, it could work, but usually... usually... to get a cohesive look, you don't wear a gold necklace, one silver earring, one copper earring and a rainbow bracelet together. You find the things that match and can pull together a whole look. Usually.... usually.... mismatched appliances... to ME.... look like someone is in the middle of a reno, or like me... had to buy a new fridge and DW (stainless), but hasn't gotten around to or hasn't the money to purchase a new microwave or stove. In the big picture, kitchens don't have to be magazine perfect. But usually.... if someone does a reno, there is a plan for everything to flow together. If function is as important as looks, and for many, it is more important, then by all means, get what works or is affordable when you can get it. But most on this forum or most who redo a kitchen, it is based at least partially on getting a new look. And like jewelry or outfits or whatever, one usually... usually... tries to coordinate. And none of the above is a slam. Just an observation. As for "tacky", I do use that word a lot, and I am WAY past high school. I've seen tacky. It does exist. I haven't seen it on this forum, though. But if I do, I probably won't say anything ;)

I'm not sure which layout I like best yet, and it might not be any of them. Here's why. Are you really going to spending your entire time entertaining at your sink? Point being, I actually think an island sink is in the way of any entertaining (and any view) and really limits your prep space. If I'm entertaining, I wash dishes at the end of the party. I try to load dishes into my dishwasher as the event progresses, but I like the island clear of anything since that's where people tend to gather. Having a sink in the middle of the entertaining space gets in the way of all the action. Add dishes that are waiting to be washed will just add to the mess. Having a clear island gives you a TON of prep space. Your prep space in all 4 of those options above is really choppy. So, I'd put your micro drawer in your island. You could also try putting either 1 or both your ovens in your island. Put your dishwasher and sink in your perimeter.

Do you keep a lot of wine? We don't, so I prefer a beverage fridge that reaches lower temperatures and allows you to keep other stuff in it too. Since you like to cook, have you looked into the Miele CSO (convection steam oven)? I have the Miele CSO XXL, plumbed version, and it is my most used appliance. Will get another one in my next house. You can search the kitchen forum for lots of threads on that model. Majority here with CSOs are very happy with them.

thanks a lot for your reply, the funniest thing is the 3 contractors we took estimate from never pointed this out to us. We are in a time sensitive mode, the total including the vent and cooktop is 20 + 1/13/16 . we have another option, to go with Dacor http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/DCT305S.html which is 19+ 1/13/16 the counter top total is 38 inches wide can go upto 39 as we are replacing that as well.

You are talking about a pop-up (telescoping) downdraft vent, right? You realize that you have to have support all around the perimeter of the flange of the cooktop? The spec from kitchenaid is 24" deep. You can't simply add the hole sizes together. You also have a MUCH wider apparatus beneath the countertop to house the blower and telescoping mechanism if you are talking about a pop-up downdraft.

It's your money so order if you must, but I really foresee some pain in your future when you try to piece this all together. I seriously advise you to get the spec sheets out and review every dimension before you place your order. Don't just look at hole sizes, look at the front to back dimension of the flange surrounding the cooktop. You cannot cut a hole in that, that is what supports the weight of the cooktop and the heavy pots and pans you will be using on it. You need adequate support front, rear, and sides, and you cannot be cutting holes where that support must be in place.

I urge you to slow down a little and make sure you get this right.

You are absolutely right. We do have the telescoping downdraft there already, we have a jenn air cooktop there currently ( not working though). I re measure the inside of the cabinet it is almost 24 inches, so my question is does a 24 inch cabinet mean the external dimension of the cabinet total is 24 inches. then we do have that. I am thinking to have the appliance store come and measure they do charge an amount but they take it off if I have them install this, which I am intending to.
If there is anyone who installs this combination or have done it in past if they can give me the actual cut off dimension that would be great.
I really appreciate all your help.
