Gritty Mix: "Quikcrete" Gravel instead of crushed granite?
Comments (10)The size range is a bit wide so it might not really be feasible, but the pH is likely the big issue. I looked at it here in Chicago, and found it full of calcareous stone. Have you searched for "Seed and Feed" stores? Those places cater to folks raising chickens, show and racing pigeons, etc., and always carry granite based grit. I get it for around $8 per 50# bag. The stuff I get is Mount Airy granite, from North Carolina (Gran-I-Grit) definitely closer to Boston....See MoreHelp! Al's Gritty Mix: crushed granite alternative?
Comments (23)Here you go Ruby! The pictures I promised you of my gardenias in the gritty mix. Notice the coloring and buds. They love the gritty mix! This one was tiny since the start of using the gritty mix This one was a cutting I started just this summer. This one was also a cutting. I bought it as a 2inch high high plant in a 2 inch pot!lol. It grew a lot over the summer. It is a special one and a rare one. It opens Yellow flowers and is very sweet. I won't take a chance of loosing this one to a peaty mix. Gritty all the way. This is my frost proof one. I am determined not to loose this one too. This one was saved from MG! It almost died when I first heard of the gritty mix and I desperately transplanted it into the gritty mix with the kind help of Al and Josh and look at it now. Here is a group shot of many other plants in the gritty mix. ALL were bare rooted and many have very sensitive roots. They all did fine:-) You plants will do fine if you listen to the friends here. By the way,Josh has made some more very important points. I wish you success. Mike...See MoreCrushed granite or Crushed quartz?
Comments (6)I post this in no way to diminish Al's accomplishments in helping expose many here (and on other forums) to new ideas ... but I think Al has stated many times the gritty mix is not "his." If you search on it, bonsai growers (and others) have been using this mix (or a variant of it) for years. Because he posts about it, we tend to associate it with him and call it his mix. When I first started reading posts about it, I searched on Turface or Haydite or granite and was surprised to keep landing on site after site where the people had been talking about these items for a long time already. Al has done a great service in talking about it outside of bonsai circles, explaining why is works so well, helping people understand the science, and exploring its use for other plants. He, like many other members, diligently answers questions and is helpful in providing additional information whenever asked. Anyone in the world could start a business selling it. Someone probably will or maybe already has....See MoreBest Way to Use Crushed Granite to Create a Patio?
Comments (26)When you are installing decomposed granite (DG) with a stabilizer, the usual advice I have seen is to place down 2 inches of DG and then water it and then compress it, allowing at least a day to settle before you do the next layer. If you are not using a stabilizer, then does this apply? Can you just put down 2-inch layers, compress those, and then immediately put down the next 2-inch layer? Do you need to water down each 2-inch layer before compressing?...See Morejenswrens
