vessel sink draining question

Hi,

We were all set to purchase a vessel sink, and then we saw one a friend just had installed. It drains EXTREMELY slowly. As in, it fills with less than a minute of use, and then takes several minutes to empty. It has just a screen, no pop-up or overflow. The plumber told her that this is characteristic of bathroom sinks without an overflow -- there is no venting, so they don't drain properly.

Is this correct? Is this a common issue? Is there a way to avoid it? (There is no problem with the room's toilet.)

We are using the same construction contractor, so our sink would be installed by the same (experienced) plumber. We would not consider such slow draining to be acceptable, and now we're afraid that we're setting ourselves up for a big problem! We have to make our sink and vanity decision very soon, we're not crazy about what's available with an overflow, and so we feel we may have to scrap the vessel. Thoughts?
