Please DO NOT ever throw your daughter's favorite blankie. My mother threw mine away and I always missed it. Once it reaches the state of being a rag,vacuum seal it and save it for her.
Just think how bad you'd feel if you tossed out Linus's blanket.

I'mm 55 years old, and I still have my old pink blankie I've had since I was 3. It's very rasgged and thin, but I'll keep it forever.

We once left my daughter's blankie at the babysitter's house. she howled (my daughter, not the sitter) until I drove back there and retrieved it!

part of the problem is that you're literally washing them to death - there is only so much abuse even modern fibers can take before they start to break down.

they're never going to be as 'fresh' as new blankets - but that is part of the comfort for kids - the aging process is something we adults take for granted, but it's as fascinating to kids as our wrinkles are.

it's an old rule of thumb that what vinegar won't break up, baking soda will - so you might try adding half a cup of vinegar to the load one time, and half a cup of baking soda (in the wash basin, not the detergent dispenser) the next time - neither will 'hurt' anything, and it may help.

I had a friend whose son had a blankie that eventually became a few cherished knotted gray fibers in a ziplock in his nightstand. When he was young he referred to me as one of the people who remembered when "blankie was whole." Aw. Another friend has her daughter's blankie framed in a shadow box frame with a small brass plaque.

My kids didn't have irreplaceable blankies, thank goodness. One had a thing for rabbit skins which aren't washable so when something yucky happened we made a trip to Tandy's and bought another. My daughter loved her pacifiers and usually had one in each pocket and one in her mouth.

Wash the blankies in mesh bags to reduce the fiber stress. And line dry.

My grandson, the autistic one had a huge attachment to his bankie. If you know anything about autistic kids you know how they resist change and want everything always same-o, same-o.
His Bankie was becoming a bunch of strings held together by the satin binding, but my daughter dutifuly washed it in one of those lingerie bags and dried it in the same and returned it to him.
One day when he was about 6, she found it in the waste basket in the laundry room. She didn't say anything....but didn't empty the wastebasket....after about 3 weeks she asked where his bankie was....and he said "Threw it away....all yukky!"
And that was that.
So....be patient and deal with the "less than fresh." You washed it...it's clean.

Actually, it seems fresher. I did the overnight soak and washed it, and it wasn't nearly as funky as it had been. I will continue to dilligently wash one a day, though!!! Thanks for the help, and I think I'll start to regularly add in the vinegar and baking soda. Also put it in a garment bag. When I introduced this blankie I had no idea the impact it would have on her life. It is her best friend :) Christy

My youngest was the same with her blankie, and MIL much like you. MIL washed it while the girls were visiting and daughter cried because "you washed all the love out of it." Sandy

AWWWW....I hope his gramma told him she would put the love back...not to worry.

you can try what i did with my kids and now my grandbaby.
When the bankies began to seem worn out i purchased some flannel material and some quilt backing then i sewed the bankies to teh flannel and gave them a whole new life. This process can be repeated again and again. Now my one daughter has a queen size one on her bed that she adores and cant part with. I did the same with my youngest daughter, only hers is double size and she also has a pillow made from parts of her second one and various pieces of her old fav clothing or peices of my old clothes they would like to cuddle with. when the would get musty or dirty (when the kids were small) i allways turned to the standard and cheapest, kindest cleanser baking soad and vinager.
