I thought I'd share with my sweet friends here the tea for two I set to honor my mom's birthday.

of your mother. It brought tears to my eyes.
I know for sure she would have loved being the
guest of honor at your lovely tea table! I'm sure she's smiling
down and is so proud you're her daughter...

Love your picture, Marianne. I gardened with perennials for years but often included a couple HTs. They never did well in my garden--BS magnets from my local garden center which did not carry any other type of rose, much less BS resistant roses. Years later when I decided I was going to grow lots and lots of roses, I can't even tell you where that idea came from--but not long after that I discovered old roses and Austin roses in one of the nursery catalogs and ordered a couple. Then I started receiving David Austin catalogs and of course went absolutely nuts over his roses. As my gardens transitioned from mostly perennials to about 2/3s roses, it was Austins and modern shrubs and floribundas that prevailed. Then I started adding a few minis and hybrid musks--but one day woke up and discovered that I missed those big big show blooms of the HTs. So I picked two spots in the gardens for HTs, but picked more wisely this time around (some BS resistance required!). So I circled around also. At this point in time, some 30+ years of gardening later, I have roughly 1/3 HTs and floribundas, 1/3 Austins and modern shrubs, and 1/3 older type roses (hybrid musks, Bourbons, polyanthas, etc.--it's a bit too cold here for some of the really wonderful Old Roses I wish I could grow). Oh yes, a number of minis also, so I guess my "thirds" doesn't quite work out, does it. LOL My point is that I have a fairly balanced number of roses from several different groups of roses. That is a lovely idea. I would start at your public library. i know mine has a book club during the morning. Our library hosts various clubs and talks and food is usually served. It's true that many women's clubs are geared around volunteering. I think that is why the Red Hat club started. It is a social group with no volunteering. I agree that many older women do not want to drive at night. I would also suggest a senior center, but not all seniors like them. Someone has to get the ball rolling. I can see a monthly tea being a successful event. You would have to be clear on stating the purpose.

Thanks all. My first system was to keep all my papers on a particular table in the living room. But every time I set up a pile of important papers, DH sees it as a place to put things for me to read. Mail creeps in and piles up. Magazines and catalogs. Then we have a cleaning moment and the whole pile goes into hiding somewhere. I do have a binder. I think I need a binder for current, and a box for old. I will talk to DH about it. Thanks for your help. I think I am going to have (at least) monthly periods of doubt throughout this experience. We will just set the goal at non-violent, and ride through it. I can't be that bad a customer - I don't harass or insult. And nobody goes into this without questions and revisions. We are still on paper. So now I have a written copy of the "Christmas" plan revisions, and we can go forward.

Sweet Tea or Iced Tea??

Susan, most restaurants in Virginia have both sweet and unsweetened iced tea, so I guess we are the dividing line on the East Coast. North of here is almost always unsweetened, and I know NC is almost a purely sweet-tea state. Personally, I prefer unsweetened with lemon. And I don't add sweetner of any kind, which means it has to be really fresh. As an aside, I have a friend who travelled to Ohio recently. She stopped at a fast food drive through and asked for a "sweet tea". They gave her "Hi-C". When my sister brought this mistake to the clerk's attention, she apologized, but said she had never heard it called "sweet tea" before.

Kathe, This table is such a touching way to remember your Dear Mother.

What a sweet remembrance of your mother Kathe. I know she would be pleased that you still set up a tea table for her. Love your tablecloth and your dishes. The teacups are beautiful and so is the vase with the flowers in it. Love the simple color of the teapot and sugar and creamer...perfect style.

Oh I loved your table. When I was young my mother would tell me she would come visit and we'd have tea when I was older and out of the house. She passed young as well. Tea with Mom would be great right now.

Kathe, words fail me...tho tears running down my cheeks don't.
Thank you for sharing your Mom with us. I loved the way you described her affection for soap opera stars and others. And I definitely identified about the fried chicken! My Mom made the most perfect golden fried chicken and I just can't get it like her's.

To lose your Mom when she was far too young is just heart-wrenching, and the sudden-ness of it must have been so devastating for all of you. But reading about her, and seeing this lovely table for her, I can tell she is very much with you all the time.
