Garbage disposal - silly question
Comments (0)We are getting rid of our garbage disposal. I run it daily but don't really need to; the vegetable trimmings are all composted and meat scraps go in the trash not the disposal. I would rather have more room under the sink. What do I do with the wall switch? Should it be taken out? Can it be used to re-wire for under cabinet lighting? I guess I could just ask the electrician when he comes, but thought I would get some input as to possibilities first....See MoreGarbage disposal leaking- questions re: new GD and air switch
Comments (18)We had the Badger and just replaced it with another Badger today. I wanted the same one since it fit and the dishwasher drains into it and it would hook back up the same. We didn't even have to change the hook up in the sink. Mine has the switch in the wall behind the sink. I don't see why your switch couldn't move to there. The air gap is for your dishwasher, so dirty water won't back up and drain into your clean in case of a plumbing back up. The bigger ones are really about the same size, so I don't see why you couldn't put a different one in. Oh, and yes, mine rusted out and was leaking from the bottom....See MoreDishwasher & Garbage Disposal Wiring Question
Comments (3)Thanks for the reply Ron. The light switch controls my garbage disposal. So the wiring from the disposal goes in to the switch and then it used to go in to the old dishwasher (hard wired). I bought a 3 prong plug and now have it plugged in to the outlet behind the dishwasher (and it works) but the dishwasher doesn't fit any more because the plug sticks out too far. So I'm thinking I can possibly hard wire it in a again to the new dishwasher (is this even safe?) or I think I'll just buy a low profile 6" extension cord like this one http://www.sears.com/stellar-labs-6inch-extension-cord-with-flat-rotating/p-SPM11392602830?sid=IDx20110310x00001i&gclid=CLLL0JC109ACFQEOaQodpmMKXw&gclsrc=aw.ds Thoughts?...See MoreDisposal question
Comments (46)He always told us never put any peels down the disposer, except lemon or orange, or grease and to always use cold water and let it run for a few minutes after you turn the disposer off. Good enough advice to repeat. We put lemon or lime skins in about once a week. I only run it after the end of filling the dishwasher. If the lemon skins have not cleared completely in 2 days I'll put a couple pounds of ice cubes in. That always clears away the lemon skins. Nothing sharpens the blades because there aren't any blades. There are hammers that pulverize the food and press it into holes on the sides of the disposer. Pull out the black rubber stopper and peek in with your flashlight. The so called sharpeners do nothing but remove gunk from the hammers and the holes....See Moreasolo
