Wolf 30 with microwave venting

I know it is best to have a good vent when using a range with 9k to 15 k btus. If it is not possible to add a good vent is it safe and what would be the draw backs to using the present microwave vent. My present range puts out btus from 4k to 12.5 k and we have never had a problem. While I cook a lot I do not fry and stir fry a lot. We really want to buy the wolf 30 range but want to make sure it is safe. Any help would be great!

I have the same question/problem. I'm interested in the Wolf DF304 range and vent outdoors currently using over-the-range venting through my GE microwave oven. I don't do a lot of high temperature cooking and I've not ever had a problem with my current electric range. What are the safety issues if we don't have anything greater than 200 CFM through the hood? Thanks!

I don't think the salesman is trying to pull your leg. The BTU's that a Viking or Wolf generate requires a vent hood that can handle that amount of heat. You also need the vent to circulate air which helps the burners perform. It will be a gas range, correct? You also need a minimum of 24" clearance between the top of the range and the vent. I'd say for a 30" range, even a powerful one like Wolf, 600 is fine. In my opinion the only time you may need more than that is if you are doing a HUGE pro style range, and you'd definitely want more than that if you're going to be doing indoor grilling. Otherwise, greater CFM means greater costs, greater noise, greater makeup air, and no benefits.

All drawer MWs are made by Sharp and function the same. Really well. Unlike traditional microwaves that have the magnetron on the side,drawer MWs have them on the bottom. No need for rotating tray. It heats evenly. The differnce is the door skin. Some people are willing to pay a premium so the MW door skin matches oven/warming drawer door skin.

"From the Floor to the top of the cabinet I have 66 inches." "both my wife and I are 5'10"..." If you're 5'10", you're 70" tall. Why are the top of your cabinets below your head? The top of my cabinets is at 84". Did you mean the bottom of the cabinet? If so, and it sounds much more reasonable, then my thought would be to either remove the cabinet and replace with a chimney hood or replace the cabinet with a smaller (ie shorter) cabinet. For example, the cabinet over my range is 16" tall, but the one over the fridge is 12". I'd replace the 16" cabinet with a new 12" cabinet.

Don't take shortcuts and vent according to the recommendations of the range you buy. Electric and gas are not even close to the same thing....More heat, odor, grease, steam, and smoke.

You don't have a Wolf, or anything close.

If you don't cook high heat and stir fry etc, then you don't need a range with high powered BTU burners. Keep it simple (and cheap!) and buy something that will work with your existing ventilation.

I'm convinced - I need to move the over-the-range microwave and install a decent hood if I go with a gas range, even if it's not a Wolf. It makes sense to include this in the kitchen remodel. Thanks for the suggestions.
