Now that said, people use products everyday for things other than their intended purpose and which they have not been tested for, or approved by some regulatory agency or quasi public interest group.

Doesn't mean the product(s) won't work for the purpose YOU intend to use it for, or that it isn't safe for that purpose. Doesn't mean it will be safe or work either. It's simply the Nanny State looking out for you.

Take guns for example. Warnings and legalease galore all over them and the boxes and stores and some you'll need licenses for. They are used every day to rob someone, which is not their INTENDED purpose or approved by the manufacturer or sanctioned by and group or agency. This in no way reflects the thing's performance for carrying out that task.

No one here is going to pat you on the back and give you the appliance gods' blessing for using the oven that way. They aren't going to stop you either. You use it how you want , but you are going to assume ALL risk which you may be entirely comfortable with.

If you need your hand held, it might not be a good idea to go this route. If you are more of a self reliant type, then you may want to go for it.

Thanks. I guess Im not looking to be stopped or to be patted on the back. im just looking for the real reason so I can make my own educated decision on it. It buggs me that JA cant give me a specific logical reason, so I thought I'd ask here as I assume there are industry professionals who might know for sure.

If its more likely to catch on fire in that position, maybe I wont do it. If someone has decided I might bump my forearms and get a bruise unless its 40 cm up, than I dont really have an issue using it in this configuration.

1. Containers full of liquid are often placed on countertops. If one is spilled directly above an operating speed oven, rivulets may course their way into the interior of the device, resulting in electrical damage and possible shocks to the operator.

2. Children, thinking the thing is a microwave, which it is, may open and reach inside the device when it is actually being used as a convection oven, which it also is. This might result in serious burns to a child too young to understand the dual nature of the device.

4. The controls on the device were designed for operation at or above waist level and were not tested for safety in an under-counter mount.

I am sure there might be other reasons, but that's a start.

I own this oven. There is a large panel at the top where you make your cooking selections - I certainly wouldn't want to have to bend down under my counter to do that, so I'm wondering if that's it? Just the design not lending itself to ease of use. Also, they did not light several of the buttons and it's hard enough to see them when they are right in front of your face when the lights are not all on. This is my one and only complaint of this oven.

I don't understand it either. GE Monogram 240 Advantium is also not approved for under counter.

But the Miele speed oven is approved. So that is what we got.

Why get something you know is not approved when there are is a good option that is approved?

Thanks for the comments. The reason to get something that's not approved is nothing else works design wise for me. Ill admit to being extremely picky and putting form over function to some extent. These appliances must go next to each other and must be undercounter. That's where 3 months of working with a designer has put us. I am insisting the handles line up with each other due to their high visibility. On the Miele's the control panels for these 2 pieces are different heights, meaning the top of the oven will be higher than that of the speed oven. Our designer was going to fill in this area above the speed oven with SS panels, but I decided I cant live with that, so I abandoned the Mieles. This leaves me with the JA's as the only brand that will line up side by side, but the only problem is the JA is not approved for UC use. If its as simple as the buttons not lighting optimally, I dont care about that.

As someone concerned about the appearance, something else to consider is that the two brands might use different color lights, or different looking knobs, or different lettering/fonts on the panels. They are just going to look different, which wouldn't matter that much if they were not right side-by-side.

From an appearance perspective you might consider getting a pair of identical Miele speed ovens side by side -- sounds crazy but that way you would always have one available as a MW, or you could use them both as ovens and have plenty of oven capacity but still have the MW there for when you need it. If this doesn't make sense, then consider putting two 24 inch ovens side by side and put the MW somewhere else.

From a looks perspective, IMHO having the JennAir right next to the Miele is not going to make you totally happy.

I think it's the heat. IIRC, the built-in 120v GE Advantiums can be installed under a countertop but not the 240v versions.

Hi. Thanks for the comments. Just to clairify- I never meant that I was considering a Jenn Air/ Miele combo. It would be both JA or both Miele. Im WAY too picky to ever consider a combo like that.

I again spoke with a JA rep. She told me the JA speedoven was not UL approved for use under a cooktop. That's fine with me since I never intended to put a cooktop over it. She wasnt really familiar with the fact that the piece should be installed 40" off the ground, so she looked it up, then went to talk to her manager. He didnt understand it either. Finally, we decided since the instructions say 40" off the ground RECOMMENDED, not required, that it was just that the speedoven is easier to use at the suggested height. She says if it was a safety concern, it would be given as a requirement, not a recommendation.
Lee676, I guess I dont understand why things that get hotter cant be used undercounter, as I dont understand the ventilation difference between undercounter and snug in a wall cabinet. Seems like if the piece needed a certain ventilation, they should just say that, not give you some height restriction without expalination. But, I guess if that's the case with the Avaniums, there must be something to it that i just dont get.
Anyway, as you may have guessed, Im getting my JA wall oven and speed oven. And they will line up perfectly, and I will sleep soundly at night! (assuming of course that im not wrong about this whole thing and wake up in a ball of flames thanks to my speedoven being installed undercounter).

ovens with vent restrictions are clearly stated in the install drawings and usually are for spacing far enough away from another heating appliance's exhaust vents. It's usually to keep intake air for cooling the electronics at a suitable temp.
