TSP is really pretty amazing stuff. Yes, I know it's toxic to fish, but so are many other things we do. I dispose of mine by pouring it into the yard, rather than direct to wastewater. I use it as rarely as possible, but sometimes only it will do. Sizing, I've determined, is only dilute wallpaper paste, which TSP is very effective for. If the stuff you're finding is not water soluble, then it's maybe something that went over the sizing. I also use "tincture of time" a lot. Spray water, let sit, scrape or wipe; spray water, let sit, scrape or wipe. Finally, I have one odd solution for some things... I paint over them (usually with latex), and once the paint is dry but before it's fully cured, it's easy to scrape or cut a lumpy substrate away. I use this for old, very hard paint drips and edges, for example, which come away sometimes like butter once a new bit of paint is put over top. If this glue of yours is lumpy, it might work. It probably doesn't matter what you use really. I would use a green scrubbie pad and whatever tool you choose that gets the wall wet. I would just use a squirt bottle with hot water. This is a fairly normal experience when someone has used sizing on drywall actually. My theory is that the sizing combines with the residual paste that is left on the wall and creates this rubberized goo. This is why we don't use sizing on drywall, but I know for years it's what everyone working in the paint stores was telling us this is the proper thing to use. From now on, prime!

I just used Gardz last night to start the repair process in the bathroom I just painstakingly stripped wallpaper off unprepared dryway (what a nightmare - I am still cursing whoever did this!). I sanded it down pretty well, but there were still little chunks of glue that I could not get off. Anyway, the gardz cost $30 a gallon, and my local store did not carry it in quarts. I used very little as it is quite thin. It did an amazing job of "sealing" that drywall and I feel alot better about moving forward with this! Some of that pesky glue actually loosened while I was applying the gardz and I scrapped it off as I went. This morning, I have a fairly smooth (well, excepted where the drywall is torn and we have to skim coat) wall and it feels like a nice consistent surface sealed from any residual glue etc. The can says to sand, apply gardz, do the skim coat, sand and then reapply gardz. I was going to use a normal white tint primer for the second application - over the skimcoat as i think that is the advice I read on this forum. Do I need to apply the gardz over the skimcoat like the can says? thanks for the recommendations, this seems to be a great product!

Ok, so about 4 months ago i subbed a wall paper removal job to some painters i know. they washed the glue and sanded, as well as primed the walls with an oil based primer that the customer had chosen by recomendation from the paint store. Now, 4 months later i am getting calls about the glue bleeding through the paint, after running a humidifier in that room. the customer noted the stickyness of the glue and how it was all over the walls. i dont know what primer was used, but having personally done multiple wallpaper removal jobs with absolutly no problems, i am at a loss. so, i wounder why this happened, as well as what should i do now? do i need to remove the paint and start all the way from the beginning? or should i just prime it with 2 coats of the guardz primer and repaint? like i said i am at a loss and i want to make this right. any ideas?
