Help Snowman Nose

Hello, I'd like an idea or method to do a snowman nose.

There is a link to a 'snowman pail' which I am trying to duplicate but using small white plastic cups like the size you'd get when a pill is being dispensed. These will become candy cups for our Christmas party.

I will use wiggle eyes - cotton balls for earmuffs and a Sharpie for the mouth. My dilema is the orange 'carrot' nose.

I bought orange pipe cleaners but now I'm not sure how to attach them to the plastic cup. Would you poke a tiny hole and stick them partly in or, would you recommend a glue gun?

If I use a glue gun should I bend them a bit on one end or could I make a "V: in order to have a little surface to get stuck in the glue?

How about mixing up a batch of flour, salt and water clay?
Roll little carrots. Let dry. Spray orange. Use a glue gun to attach.

I'm just a lot inventive but a little bit crafty.

Can you please give me some kind of a recipe, it sounds like fun and the perfect 'nose'

Although this was posted in 2007 and it's 2016 I thought I would throw in my 2 cents regarding pricing. My wife's family have been making a different x-mas craft each thanksgiving after dinner for about 20 years. Like many others, we do not sell what we make but when people see what is made they want to buy one. Items mass produced will typically be lower cost because of the low cost labor used outside the U.S. If you factor in the cost of your material and the time it took to make each at a reasonable US hourly rate w/o benefits and then mark it up by a % you feel is appropriate, then that is what I would use. Otherwise you maybe giving them away and losing money. At the very least cover your cost if making x-mas items for sale give you personal joy. This year we are using the coil springs to make various Santa's and Snowmen. I personally went out and found an old coil spring mattress and used bolt cutters to remove about 50 of them. Granted, I got 50 springs but I also have about 2 hours of my own time in the process. I value my time and car expense more than what companies are paying workers in China, Thailand, Mexico, etc. We typically buy decorating items from Hobby Lobby to hold the cost down of each project but we have also sewn wool caps from scratch for decorating glass blocks into frosty the snowman that you will not find anywhere else. One year I went out to the woods and cut logs from several different diameters and drilled/doweled them together to make snowmen. Yes,. It was just done a week ago. It's not installed yet. The brand that the strainer used doesn't come in a Matt finish, so if we did sand it a tiny bit then put on a Matt polyurethane it would be a different brand. We heard read that if a different brand is applied that it can peel. I guess it's best to leave it alone.

Usually when designing something like this you have to plan it before you do something, not after so proper steps can be taken to accommodate tile installation and it's accessories. Now if you want to use a certain product and if they don't make something to go with it, it is very hard to find a match and make it look good in a specific situation. On the general note, if you found something that will work in your situation, maybe it's worth a few extra dollars to have this done right and looking nice considering this is your front steps, the front of the house and that is should be a statement of its own...That is something, everyone is going to see when they walk up to the front door. IMO about the extra money, you will spend you will forget about it probably the next day but you will be looking at your front steps for as long as you own the house... So it might be worth it. With that said posting a picture would help so people can get an idea what you have there and try to suggest something? Good luck

Durock irritating my nose and respiratory system, help.

In my home, that strong chemical smell was evident after they installed the Durock, it was visibly moist, as in just in from the manufacturer, and not dried out yet. Some weeks passed and it seemed to dry. Tile was installed over a Schluter system, all is intact, looks great, is flawless! NOW THE PROBLEM: The odor coming out of my new bathroom is upsetting. No, its not sewer gas, and the house is spotless. You CAN smell this odor when you enter the home to some degree, and it is worse in the bath and hallway leading to the bedrooms. I smell it in my bedroom and office next to the bathroom, not as strong. All of the surfaces are clean, new hardwood flooring throughout. Every inch of the upstairs, walls were washed three times during my remodel. The hardwood sat for months and offgassed before install. I thought it was backdraft from my bathroom exhaust vent that was not yet vented through the roof, but that was done and nothing changed. I purchased a rather expensive air purifier and... no luck! This is not mold, there is NO mold anywhere. The home has no leaks, I know every nook and cranny in the home, including the underside of the roof and the basement sill plates. I have a CO2 detector which shows zero, no gas range, and this isnt a gas smell. Im struggling with this. I even had all of the ducts and returns cleaned and looked in with the camera after completion, no chemicals used there either. The duct system has a mighty 2" filter. I inquired about having my furnace A coil cleaned and the HVAC person tried to talk me out of it. Says this is not needed; I read otherwise. Also, the smell is evident without the furnace running. I have the same furniture I had in my previous home. Could this smell be the Durock? Could it be the drywall I replaced? It is a sweet smell, the glue used during the flooring install? My first thought was a toothpick...paint them orange, clip w/nail clippers to the size you want...poke a hole in the cup & a dab of glue...a $1 bottle of orange acrylic craft paint.

Other thought was if you had access to any of those "Bright Light" plastic thingy's that the kids used many yrs ago...made pictures & such on a back-lit "Bright Light" board w/holes. Couldn't see the one you found for an example but a pill cup is pretty small. Jeanne S.

You could buy a couple of candy orange slices and cut little wedges out of them to make the noses and then just hot glue them in place. What I am referring to are the ones that are like a big gum drop, but shaped like an orange slice.
If you wanted more substance than a toothpick, you could use sandwich picks.
Those pill cups are so small that a little triangle of orange felt might work also.
The salt dough recipe is equal parts of salt and flour and then enough water to make it like a thick dough. Bake in a low oven about 275 for 15-20 minutes for something that small.
You could also use something like the Sculpy clay from a craft store.

My thought was to use a dowel with the circumference that suits your cup and paint it orange. Then saw off the thickness you need and glue it on. You could then dab orange paint on the front of it. That would probably look pretty close to your snowman pail. Incidentally, I think the snowman pail is really cute.

The "nose" they used is wooden plugs used on church pews or some cabinets.Purpose is to hide the screw for a more finished look. They come in packages at Home Depot or other hardware store, they actually have another "plug" that has little twist marks the length of them(1 1/2 in long & 3/8 in thick or thereabouts) & I think 1 of those cut in 2 in the center would work, my DH built a lot of stuff with wood so I have some in garage, can't remember what they are called. Even old Tinker Toys pieces cut off & make nose more pointy & paint orange. Could maybe get some at thrift shop. If you have 1 of those Am. flags that is worn out on the little dowel, that could be cut. Long wooden matches could be cut & filed to a point I use an inch wide nail file with foam center 1 side is course other finer,got it at beauty supply house. Don't like it for nails, too thick ! Great for crafts. Keep with paint brushes.Cheaper yet is go for walk & pick up little twig pieces. Those might look better natural if they have bark on them. Jan

Cute snowman pail. I think the glue gun might melt your cups. Lots of good ideas already given but I'll throw another your way.

Some of the orange craft foam from Michaels or a craft store should work. You could cut it the shape and size you'd like. Could use a marker or craft paint and make little lines if you want it to resemble a more real life carrot. You might be able to use double stick tape or the little squares used for scrapbooking to attach them to the cups.
