Good afternoon,

I am trying to decorate a dry sink that I have in my entry. It is about 24" X 36". The "sink" part is about 5" deep and then it has a frame around the back and sides that holds the top drying shelf which is about 6" wide X 36" long. The shelf is about 10" up from the bottom of the "sink". As you can imagine this is a bit hard to display anything on. At this moment, I have a small lamp at each end of the shelf, but would really like to have one up on the shelf, and one down in the bottom and then a few other items displayed...maybe something else on the shelf and an item or two in the bottom. If you can understand my problem, I really need help. I don't have a camera, so I can't post pictures. Any ideas or pictures would be VERY much appreciated!!!

Jaybird, someone on one of the forums has posted a pic of a similar item that was decorated for Christmas. I'll have to see if I can find it for you.

I think it had greenery in the bottom, a bowl and pitcher, and then some other items.

Sounds like you have a very nice piece, hope we can help you decorate it really pretty. ;o)

I have the hardest time helping someone if I am not there (shows what a lousy long-distance decorator I would make). But, lets give it a try.
First, what is your style in your home, since you have a drysink, is it safe to say Country?

What other decorating items would you like to see displayed?
Good things to show would be a lovely dish (on a stand), a small bit of greenery, bell jar, with a little something in the theme displayed under the jar. A little lamp is perfect, I love incorportaing a light or lamp into a vignette. Do you have a nice bowl(to put keys in maybe), a couple of books, a favorite figureine?

Gosh, there are lots and lots of things you could put on this stand and it would be very pretty, you just have to narrow things down abit of what you would like. Oh yes, also, a small little "art" on a stand, mirror on wall over it, or Art on wall over it etc.

If this were in the dining room or living room it could be a charming "mini bar". Well, those are a few thoughts, you'll have to come back and tell us about some items you own that might fit in with a theme. Then everyone could try to help you out and make more suggestions.

A few more ideas: 1) consider flipping the kitchen and the dining room, this would enable you to better coordinate pantry, laundry, and utility spaces (what is that space next to the washer/dryer)? And would also help concentrate plumbing. In addition, it would give you a "clean" wall in your dining area, where I would put a bench (against the wall), w/ a rectangle farm table. This would give you enough seating for company, but leave you with plenty of space everyday. 2) I would also improve the layout of the master bath and closet, I think a better use of space is to have one well planned closet (versus 2), and, if possible, include a pass thru to the laundry area. 3) since space is tight, I would use pocket doors throughout the interior (except for bedroom entrances) 4) that back bedroom is really small ,,, I would consider having the front and back bedrooms the same size and (without knowing your ceiling height), I would include built in storage on top of the closets, which I'd keep at minimum depth. I'd also widen that section a bit and shoot for slightly bigger rooms. I'd re-work that hall area, seems like there is wasted space and I'd consider angled doorways (be sure it's not so tight that you can't move in furniture). 5) The second bath can be laid out more efficiently to give some space to the bedrooms. I'd just have a bath/shower combo, a stool, and vanity/sink. I would omit a linen closet and instead include built-in's ,,, both in the shower (for shampoo etc.) and around the room e.g. medicine cabinets and storage cubbies. In terms of layout, I'd have the door open up across from the sink/vanity, with the tub turned, and the stool on the outside wall (that's a classic bath layout, and it's classic for a reason). 6) With cement floors, I'd consider radiant floor heating. 7) I would have the left and right sides of the house 13.5 feet wide and then the middle section would be 18 ft. I'd also consider lining up the entrances to the bedroom areas on each side of the house across from one another. I'd also consider a built-in opposite the bar where one side is a book shelf (opening to the living area) and the other side is a buffet/server/china cabinet opening to the dining area. I like symmetry. 8) although I like the front door in the middle from an exterior perspective, it would not work for me from an interior perspective. Slide it down off-set to the french doors in the back of the house. I would then add two windows to the living room. Along with symmetry, I like windows. I strongly recommend that you finalize a detailed house plan, BEFORE you start building AND to include in your written contract with the builder. Good luck.

I assume given your choice in table, that your taste is more modern? I tend to skew traditional/farmhouse but I think a good, functioning entryway table should have a mirror above the table (or artwork, but I prefer mirror if it's a narrow hall, to bounce light around), a bowl or tray for keys and a vase with dried flowers, or fresh flowers that you rotate each week. Depending on if you need lighting there, you could also add a lamp. The rest is purely your taste. Pillar candles can look pretty too. Under my table, I have baskets for shoes, because with 3 children, I like them to take their shoes off before entering the house. I also add in seasonal decor based on the time of year.

Okay....finally I got back.....yesterday I printed the ideas, and played with it some last evening!!! I call my style boring...ummmmm I mean traditional, but due to the fact of my Dad building antique repros, it may slide a little toward country! Mostly I guess you could call it functional!! Sooooo, here is what I did.....
on the top shelfy layer, I have (R to L) a lamp with a fox figurine peeking around the base...center are a couple of rusty iron birds ala Nell Hills....far right a red plate with a golden pineapple on a black stand.
Down in the "sink" part R to L, I have a matching lamp on two small books (placed a bit to the outside left from the one on the top shelf)...a squirrel figurine sitting on a limb nose to nose with a snail. On the right side under a cloche, I have a beaver fiurine...he is sitting on a pile of logs he just chopped down!! All of the animals are in brown tones and just seemed to look "fallish".... Over the entire "scene", I have a needlework of an old barn...framed in black. I think it looks pretty good thanks to you!!! I have taken a couple of 35mm pictures and hope to get a disc made so that I can post the pictures.
Again my thanks....Judith, you never give yourself enough credit!!! Luvs, I would really be thankful to see the Christmas deco if you find the picture!!

Jaybird, wow, you did pretty good I think. I did a small drawing out of what you described, my drawing is crappy (LOL), but I think I get the idea of your description. I am looking forward to seeing the pics. Is the barn red in the art work, and you pulled in the red plate to carry through the color?. Your "Fall Nature" theme sounds like you put it together pretty well!

And yes, Luvs I would love to see that picture of the Christmas deco too!

Yes, the barn is red, but so is the rest of my HOUSE!!! I am a red freak!!!! The room that it is in has red curtains and lots of other red touches along with dark gold and several greens!!!
I am going to try to post pictures here in a couple of weeks when DS is around to help!!

Your dry sink sounds wonderful, and the rest of your decor for that matter. Would love to see.
I have a dry sink, but it's being "used" in my closet for storage right now. My DDIL gave it to me since she had no place to put it. Her Dad made it himself and he died 30 yrs ago. Someday I'll find a spot in this house for it, had a place in the old one.
