Dryer Vent Question

I have a brand new house that we just moved into in March. It's a two-story house with the laundry room upstairs.

It doesn't have a direct dryer vent to the outside (I'm guessing it must be some place in the roof soffet, as there are various areas with holes in the vinyl siding).

The problem lies with the dripping of water onto our deck while running the dryer. It doesn't happen all of the time, but we've noticed it on a good 3 to 5 different occassions.

What would cause such a thing to occur? Thanks in advance!

You haven't really explained the situation.

-- Does the dryer connect to an exhaust tube and you just can't see the outlet?
-- Can you ask the builder where the dryer exhausts? Or can you go up in the attic to figure it out?
--Is the dripping coming from what you think is the dryer vent?
--Soffits should always have vents for the attic. Sometimes it's a long thin strip of mesh/screen along the full length. Sometimes it's lot's of holes (about 3" diameter) with screen/mesh over them. They're for attic ventilation--air comes in and then goes out the ridge vent.
--As for dripping, depending on the weather, it's probably condensation--the warm damp air from the dryer hits cool outside air and condenses, causing dripping. Be glad the dripping is outside, since the alternative is having it drip inside.

I'm zone 5b MA and have a dryer vent on a south wall. The area gets afternoon shade from the house. I've always thought that what I have growing in that spot is Purple-Eyed Grass, but I'm not sure. (Maybe someone could enlighten me?) It was there when we moved in. It does wonderfully there and I've never seen any weeds growing in it, so it has been very low maintenance. Even the yard grass doesn't try to spread into it. It takes quite a beating there, being right next to our cement well cover, a metal cellar door, and a corner downspout. It really got trounced on this summer when I threw a plastic tarp over it and started priming the house. The tarp was down for weeks on end and this stuff was still alive when I pulled the tarp up.

What specific brand/model is involved? Difficult to answer accurately without knowing the details. Typically the dryer must be disassembled (rear or front panel) for access to change the internal 4" straight exhaust duct to the rear for a duct turned 90-degrees to the side.

If you're planning a stacked washer/dryer it would make sense to place the vent line in the vicinity of the dryer vent port. If you don't know which washer dryer combination you'll be buying, then it might make sense to place the vent through the outside wall centered in the area of the laundry pair but slightly below the level of the bottom of the dryer. It's never a good idea to have vent ducting running vertically up, if it can be avoided. That being said, the shorter the vent line -- the better -- so if you can make your choice of appliances now, you can have the vent opening placed at an optimal location where it won't conflict with other connections for electrical, plumbing or gas lines -- but be as short as possible.

Once you get it cleaned out put a secondary dryer lint trap right next to the dryer. But something like this will save you alot of trouble with the duct through the ceiling getting clogged up and becoming a fire hazard.
