A few things to consider first: Are these sconces the only source of light in this bathroom? If so, you need to find sconces that use standard base bulbs and that have a glass shade instead of fabric. To spave money, find the least expensive sconce with a backplate that has some detail and paint it to match the rooms decor, if you are looking for pink. Make sure the glass is a frosted or white globe to obtain the maximum light. Th sconce should be rated for 100 Watts. If you place these with the globe facing up on either side of your mirror, no more than 32" apart you will have great light for grooming. If these are not the primary light, find an inexpensive sconce with a candleabra size socket and use a clip on shade in the color of your choice. The fixture can be painted or use a metal finish that matches your bath fixtures. Spend your money on the shade, which is what everyone will see. I have painted many fixtures in a silver leaf to use with chrome or brushed nickel. The silver leaf softens the overall effect but will still coordinate with your bathroom fixtures. Gold leaf works well with Brass fixtures. Often in a child's room, white paint is a good choice. I notice that one of the previous responses is from a person who is obviously affiliated with the site they recommend (Reliance) since that is the only response they ever make. Sorry that some think this only a place to advertise. If you are on a tight budget, try one of the solutions above and you will have a very custom look for little money. Jubilee makes lots of shades or check out stores in your local area for a shade. You can also dress up an inexpensive white shade with the addition of a ribbon and a bow or try gluing beads on the bottom and top. You can find these at your local craft store. On a hardback smooth shade, stenciling or hand painting works well also. Shop second hand stores or garage sales for a crystal sconce and paint it, add a lovely shade for a shabby chic look for a fraction of the price. I hope these suggestions help. We used Blue Pearl in our kids bath and we love it. The bath is small, only 5 x 7, and I wanted to go light in there. I fell in love the color and how alive it is; the man who helped us at the granite yard said it was a great choice as blue pearl will stand up to just about anything you can throw at it without having to seal it all the time. It's surviving my 3 kids and all their abuse. It is hard to photograph because of the size, but here's two pics; one of the white vanity with blue pearl top and one of the shower which has lighter tiles with blue pearl shower shelves and black marble accent tiles. I love that backsplash tile; it is gorgeous! Chrome fixtures look great with blue pearl; they seem to reflect off each other. Have you brought a piece into your space? Just wait till you see it in the light of your bathroom!

That shower curtain is pretty intense. Are you sure you want to keep it? It's just a little "precious" for older girls with that much pink, IMHO. The only color that I think could stand up to it with older girls would be a pretty bright orange, and try for a Morroccan casbah look with even more pattern and color and brass hanging lanterns and screens. Layer a cobalt blue curtain under the pink and use some metallic chains for the tieback for the pink curtain. Paint the ceiling turquoise. You can get some talavera or Turkish tiles on Ebay and frame them for an accent. If you have a drop in sink, you could replace it with a talavera one. They aren't that expensive and give lots of style. Cobalt blue bath accessories and rug with other hints of turquoise and pink here and there and it would be fab. As an alternqative, I could definately see doing a fun apple green and white bathroom, but not with that curtain. For green and white, use the chair rail/wainscoating approach and put the green below with white above. A fresh gingham check or ticking stripe for the shower curtain and add in more color with different shades of green towels. A dark green rug and various green accessories would complete the look.

The white tile I have is high gloss, but I think, it doesn't exactly appear so. You see, the tile is not completely flat. It has a very slight wave in it. I think this reduces the "shine." At the same time, this window is north facing, so there is no sun streaming in. It also is a frosted window, so that also diminishes the amount of light entering the room. (Therefore reducing the shine?) You also say: "Painted woodwork in a bathroom would probably need to be glossy to make it washable." My husband is quite the handyman. He says that we would be able to find a durable paint without high gloss. We are a family of four, but only one of us showers in there. So perhaps the paint would hold up well enough. Also: "Right, the grain shows through unless you smooth it out with filler. That's an option I hadn't thought of and would work with your door style to give you a look of "just bought" cabinets." I could use filler when painting the trim white and see how well it covers the grain. I think we could do that. Then when it comes to the vanity, the cupboard and drawers, we could consider gray paint (only if the trim worked out well). But I like the idea of staining the vanity, cupboard and drawers. That would be more work. Staining is always a bit tricky---it's difficult to get just the right colour. I am wondering whether a grey wash would work. That would be easier. Nosoccermom says: "I could see the vanity in a grey stain but would keep everything else in the color of the tiles and tub." So just doing the vanity in a grey stain/paint is something I would definitely consider. I think I would need to paint the trim in the room white and work from there.
