New Uses for Old Socks

Come on, admit it. There's a place where you toss mismatched socks that come out of the dryer. Do you hold them (like me) in a drawer, and match them up about every six months? But there are some whose mates never show up. After a few years, don't just pitch them out. Use them in your cleaning. I was on a plane flight and watched two episodes of How Clean Is your House, that BBC show where two ladies clean messy houses. On one, they used odd socks over their hands as dusters. On another show, they wet them and used them to clean bathroom sinks, using mens shaving cream for soap.

I always throw old socks in a drawer to use for cleaning.

Wow I never thought of doing that....I put them in a sock box where they stay for what seems like forever and then I end up tossing them out or putting back in the box in hopes that one day that favorite missing sock will be spit out of the dryer. The idea of using them for cleaning never crossed my mind but it is a wonderful idea. thanks

I'm in PA. About 3 months ago (here at the new house) I too received a letter from our Revenue Dept. It wasn't threatening, it just stated that the appliances I purchased in 2009 (!!!) did not have PA state tax paid on them. They were purchased at the local appliance store, which just happened to be in Tax Free Delaware. Mind you, those were the appliances from my LAST reno! I contacted the store and they told me that the state of PA came in with a court order that they turn over all their records for the last 3 years. Well, that purchase was probably right at the 3 year mark. But, we did buy some more stuff from them for this house. Not too much, but the store we bought our dishdrawers, range top, etc from did not carry SZ. So we bought from the DE dealer, and they brought them up to us, even though the new house is 2 hours from their store. (I bought a clearance item, it was a good deal that no one local could match). Anyhow, I'm waiting for the bill to come for that one. One of my old neighbors who did a kitchen reno, and bought all of her appliances from the same DE store, got a tax bill too, hers was around $800. And they give you 15 days to pay it! We didn't go to that store to avoid the tax, it truly was the place nearby that carried the appliances we wanted...including the Capital range. The dealer told me that now if they are delivering to PA, they charge tax. If it is a pickup item (which our stuff was in 2009), then they just do the paperwork without a name.

My husband bought me three pair if smartwool brand cable knit socks for Christmas. I don't care for them. They are pretty and a nice weight - not too thick or too thin and fit well in my snow boots - but they have an odd texture. It seems I can feel the individual threads when I walk. Also, there are two short diagonal seams in the heel that somehow end up under my heel, so that I'm walking on them. It feels like I have something inside the sock. Ugh. Back to the drawing board on my own hunt for the perfect socks. By the way, I do like the wigwam wool socks at Costco and like to wear them around the house in my slippers, but they are too thick to wear in shoes or boots. Also, the colors aren't quite right for me, as I prefer dark or black. Each pack of three pair contains either light grey, purple (that washes to a very bright color) and light blue. You can't get a three-pack of just the dark colors.

Our downspouts are wearing white socks -- help us!

Do the downspouts reach the ground, as they're supposed to? I had the situation where the downspouts went down to ground level, but there was about 6" of that white plastic drainpipie sticking out of the ground. I just went around with a pair of metal snips and trimmed the plastic back to near the ground. The contractor is trying to get away with the cheapest fix, and one that is not acceptable. You have two options to fix this: 1. If the downspouts are long enough, you can just trim the plastic back to a little above ground level. 2. If the downspouts don't reach all the way down, trim the plastic back anyway and have the contractor install extensions on the downspouts. Take a stand and get what you deserve. That spray paint idea is just plain sloppy and unprofessional. Particularly after what you must have spent on copper gutters, that's definitely not ok.

OK, here is my 2 cents worth! Make your own rope toys for your dog(s). I learned this from a dog forum. They are especially safe if you have dogs' that have digestive problems after excessive chewing on raw hides. I have one of those dogs. Instructions: Straighten the sock, start at either end. Tie a knot, pull tight, as you pull from both ends at the same time, leave an inch or 2 of space, tie another tight knot and keep going until you get towards the top. Try to use socks that don't have too much elastic or loose threads at either end. You don't want lose threads that will catch in their teeth like carpet edges. Holes don't matter. Boys/Men socks were best. The tough kind they wear with sneakers. I made one for my dogs' 3 years ago, and it is still intact and safe. It even washes well with their dog blankets. Marie

I just used a pair to wrap over the ends of an extension ladder to prevent marring - secured them with a rubber band. Not too pretty, but what ladder is?

I make lavender dryer sachets from old socks (without any holes) for home use. Put a cup of lavender (dried blossoms - I grow several lavender plants) in the sock, tie a knot in the top. Toss it in with the wet laundry. It will infuse your sheets with the lovely natural scent. Just give it a squeeze between loads to refresh the scent. It works for 6 or 7 loads.

I've got a grocery bag of them hanging on basement stairway right off the kitchen. I prefer white and often turn them half way inside out. They're great for dusting, window washing, snipping a toe off of to apply Old English furniture polish, just about anything. Sandy

I use them as dust cloths, but love rosesr4me's idea to make ladder socks.

Here's another use for old socks that I recently tried.....fill an old sock with rice, tie or sew off the end, put it in the freezer for a couple of hours.....then use it on your neck or head to help you cool off on extremely hot days. I also get alot of headaches and it helps to put this cool wrap on my head when I'm hurting.

If you have cats just put some catnip in an old sock and tie it up tight. Mine love to chase and carry their socks around

Or you can always make sock puppets out of them for kids by sewing buttons on them for eyes, nose and mouth!

We were watching an old French movie recently. A young girl stuffed old socks in her bra.

Similar suggestion to dianetx's above. If you can get hole kernel agricultural feed corn, put it in a container such as an old sock and heat it in the microwave for a hot pack. It is remarkable how long the corn will retain the heat.

I have never posted here before but a recent problem with my washer revealed to me a secret that may be relevant in this situation the lost socks hiding place was inside the shell of my wahser it was eating the socks. the repair man said they slip between the drum and outer shell during washing and you never know unless you take that outer shell off the washer. I was amazed!
