While many of your are suffering in very hot weather, I have the opposite complaint. It has been unseasonably cold here with so much rain everyday. I need some nice weather to go out and enjoy our little "cabana". I am posting a couple of pics of it from last year when I had set it up for a ladies luncheon when my aunt was visiting. If it ever warms up, I hope to do some new tablescapes out there.

What a beautiful place to lunch.

I will add my own weather complaints, LOL, since I won't be eating outside either. Was 108 today and will be 111 by Sunday. Ugh. I'd love to take your rain from you.

What a lovely setting. Love the way you used the fruit slices in the vases, and that lattice sure makes a pretty backdrop as does the lush green trees and plants in the background. Here's hoping you will get a little warmer soon--and that Karen's area will cool off a bit! Luvs

I appreciate your kind words and your desire to keep your trees healthy too!:-) With your enthusiasm, they should do great.:-) I really can't say the FE is the secret though, since I never officially did a test/experiment on whether the ones sprayed regularly fare better than those that I do not. What I can tell you is that insects DO attack the plants I neglect with FE I can tell you that when the FE spraying stops come October, they still stay just as green till I start again come the following spring. If I had to guess what helps them stay that way, I would say it is a combination of many factors. I try and stay in 'tune' with their needs as if they were my kids, or even my cat. lol I would say that trial and error along with everyone here helping me to understand them has gotten me to this point too, in which I will always be grateful. It's nice to understand when they rebel to drastic temp swings, lack of vinegar, my faucet water, pest invasion, poor soil, lack of good sun light, ect. I try to make sure that all their needs come together and unite to provide them with a peaceful and happy state. If I were to suggest one thing that I may do far different from many, I would say I am strict with providing vinegar which keeps the pH of my water solutions in check which in turn encourages their nutritional requirements/neesds are met on a regular basis. These two combinations seem to do wonders for my plants. I just counted 22 fruit in all various stages on my Ponderosa and have no idea what to do with it. Hi everyone, I've been thinking of updating on my plants and the neighborhood, but got caught up with so many things. These days, most of the weekends I will be out in the yard trying to decide where to put each of my plants (I've added so many more ). Many of the plants that went in the ground with pots have found their new place, along with the new ones. When I am out there (before the weather got this hot), some people passing by commented that they like my garden. There is one neighbor lady who shows interest in my plants. But, I think many of them may not agree with my practices - I don't water the lawn until it becomes utmost necessity. I got a shock when I got the water bill the first two months when I had the sprinklers on ( it was around $200 each month). It hasn't rained for almost 10 days now, and it was so hot that the grass has started to dry up. I haven't waterd it, it will come back up with the first rain it gets and I expect it to be any time. One of my neighbors had the sprinklers on for the last 3-4 days almost half of the day! (their sprinklers are on a well, I believe). And I know they might be thinking that if I can spent money on plants and water those, why can't I just have the lawn watered too. But I don't want to spend any resources on the grass that I am not intending to keep in the long run. Everything is in the startup stage, they are going to take time to grow up. If they expect me to be perfect all the time, I can't live up to that. I can't have a landscaping done with all those common plants and then rest for the rest of life (that is how it can be perfect, isn't it?). On the code vilation part, after the visit to the city, months passed by without any incident. So, I thought everyone has gone back to mind their own business. But, I had another visit from the city code enforcement - this time I was home (was about to leave for work), and the complaint is - "the grass is overgrown". I had mowed the lawn a week before (actually on memorial day while I was out planting). The officer started to explain me the code that city allows a height of 6" and she looked at the grass and could not find it to be 6" (and it was raining all that week). So, we talked about the plants and she said "we have to keep our neighbors happy to live here, so just mow it in between the rains". I don't think on the spot, I didn't ask who the complainant is, and I was banging my head for not doing so after that. I don't have a fence yet, I started with the process, everybody told me that the fence contractors will know the perimeter where the fence is allowed. But I found out that is not the case. If it is a regular 4-sided lot everybody knows (even I know where the fence can be, in that case). Finally I called up the city, they said on a corner lot, on the side yard, it is 5' within the property line. But, mine is not a real corner lot, it is a 5 sided lot. I faxed in the survey for him to mark the allowed fence line, what I got back didn't seem like real - only very little of the sideyard could be fenced). The city doesn't allow fencing the front yard. I got the trimming of the trees/shrubs done and also got 2 carrotwoods removed. After the $$$ spent on that I thought I'll wait on the fence (anyway there isn't much I could fence (both my neighbors have fences up). Then I decided to remove another big carrotwood (initially I thought I might need a permit, but then I when I measured the trunk diameter, I found out that I could do it without a permit if I do it right now. So, I went ahead and got it removed. This time I got a few quotes and I realised that the first trimming guys did overcharge me (for removing this one they gave me a price of $525 whereas I got it done for $300). Now I am back thinking about the fence. Now I have a notice from the HOA asking me to "trim & thin shrubbery and replace dead vegetation" - Can it get more generic than that? When I got it, whatever I could find and categorize as shrubbery I just flattened it - there was a ficus hedge (which will be gone once I have a fence) in the back and then some surinam cherry bushes as foundation plants (will get replaced with some flowering plants as time progresses) on one side of the house. Then I called up the HOA asking for details on what they meant. He said he will come down and show it to me. I waited for him 3 days in the morning, he didn't show up and I have given up. Last week, I was so alarmed to see two of my plants destroyed by some lunatic (I don't know who it is/was). One day they made part of the damage and after 2 days they finished it - all branches on my white mussaenda was either broken or pulled apart (still attached barely to the main stem). It was planted parallel to the driveway. There was a jasmine in front of it closer to the sidewalk, that was left alone. And the firebush which is behind the mussaenda lost the biggest two branches. Both those were not big plants, I bought those 3 gal plants (mussaaenda may be little over a month back and firebush 2-3 months) and planted it and they were establishng quite nicely. Could be the work of a bored kid, but why those two plants and why did this person come back to finish it off. I just hate that person whover it is. On a pleasnat note, most of my plants are growing without any problems. Unlike last year, my plants are getting to see the sun and experince the rain and they are growing not affected by many pests/insects (though my vegetables -long beans and bittergourd- are getting more and more stink bugs on them). And I am getting to add many more plants that I wanted all the time. Nicki, you have a great garden. I want mine to be like that one day. Mickey, when you buy the house, check out for the city regulations too. I think old cities are much more relaxed and humane than the new ones. I heard Coconut Creek is going to remove one of the mobile home parks to put up townhouses and condos since that is visually more appropraite. How can a city be so rude? One day they might even decide to ask all those who don't seem visually appropriate for them to leave (there is the new law that allows them to take over the private properties!!) wanna_run_faster, thanks. Martha, I agree with you. These days I feel that I can't trust anyone, even those who acts nice to me when I talk to them. Being "socially impaired" - that is one of my attributes - I don't make friends fast, but most of the time the friends I find are real good freinds. I am hoping I'll find a real friend in the neighborhood. zeldapug, that was a good idea to talk to the city commisioner. But that never crossed my mind.

Judy -- Fillets up to 3/4" thick. If thicker, they can go up to 22 minutes. I pat them dry, oil a bit, salt, pepper onion powder, garlic powder. When I get fancy I smear with dijon mustard and breadcrumbs. Very thin tomato slices can go under the breadcrumbs if you want. Sometimes I mix a little horseradish into the mustard. Sometimes marinate the fillets in teriyaki. It's a dopey recipe, easy to change and always comes out great. Last time for company I bought salmon, sliced it in portions, pushed it back together and topped it off as one piece with a mixture of minced garlic cooked in some butter with breadcrumbs and minced parsley stirred in (s&P unless breacrumbs are preseasoned). It looked very elegant -- like nearly a side of fish but easy to serve. Autoroast rocks. For chicken, I do it at 400 on autoroast right on the rack with the pan slipped in underneath to catch the drippings. Don't forget to put in the spatter shield. First I pat the outside dry and rub it with oil and seasonings. It comes out crisp all around. I roast it whole or sometimes cut it down the back and roast it flat. 1 hour 10-15 minutes, till leg juices run clear. Chicken breasts can go on rack same way. With bones they should cook in about 20-25 minutes unless very large. I don't change the heat, just cook a bit longer when larger/heavier. First time I used the probe I was doing a rib roast, which I like med-rare. Set the doneness for 135. 20 minutes before it was done it beeped me! I didn't trust it would be done but it was perfect. So now I use probe, a no brainer. They told me to not open the oven at all during cooking so there's no heat loss. Only issue is how long the thing cooked -- that wasn't clear the first time because I was going for the done temperature. So I used a general calculation, as I would have done before and leave things out for a few hours so they are not so cold in center and they cook a bit faster. But with the 20 minutes warning, it felt like I had kitchen help. For large cuts of meat I love the probe. It needs to be fully inserted right in the center. Rotisserie is fabulous but I only use it for guests because it's messy and more than usual clean up. But incredibly delicious chicken. I'm going to try a lamb on a spit thing with it too. I bake bread with great results. Angel cakes. If I use a mix (sometimes when I'm lazy) it comes out right to the minute of the baking directions. It just has a learning curve. I still use my book that came with the oven to figure out which setting when I do something new. I'm getting very addicted to intensive.

I am having a wood deck replaced as I type this comment. I chose the AZEK Redland Rose color (looks like redwood). I was very happy with the product they are putting down, until 2 days ago (the end of the second day of construction). Apparently overnight, some birds decided to grace the decking floor, and left quite a bit of 'deposit' on the material. Well, de-goit deck cleaner, dawn dish soap and gentle scrubbing with a plastic scrub brush and 2 days later -- the stain from the bird poop did NOT come off and appears to have eaten thrugh the finish. I read on the "This Old House" board concerning the problem with stains and AZEK -- unfortunately, I read about this after my contract was signed and they were 2 days into putting down the deck floor. Calls to the supplier were fruitkess -- he had no idea how to clean it. I am (5 days later and not much more progress on the deck) still waiting to hear from the distributor (via my contractor). The only solution they have at this point is to replace the bird-poop stained boards! OK for now -- but my deck is open and what do I do when a bird decides to relieve itself over my deck again? My deck is HUGE and this is quite costly. Anyone else have this problem? I am going to test scrap pieces with fats from cooking, wine, etc -- and see if it really comes clean. If not, someone PLEASE contact me. I will gladly go in on a class action suit if need be! megga@verizon.net

What a nice setting!! Looks very pretty!

Our weather is terrible also. We went from 90 to rain every day and cool...only 62 here right now and we are FREEzing!

Karen, guess one type of weather is just as bad as the other as far as eating outside!
Luvs, the rain is good for something as it does make everything around here very green and when the sun decides to shine, it is just beautiful.

Thanks for your nice comments on our "cabana" and the tablesetting. Looks like we won't be eating out there for quite some time now and it won't be due to the weather. Our septic tank has been backing up for the last while off and on and now has reached a point where we have to dig up the whole backyard and make a new drainage field, etc. What's worse, is that it is going to cost $8000! I could buy A LOT of dishes with that money! It is literally "throwing money down the toilet!"

Oh gosh, DD, that is horrible. Don't you just hate having to spend money on something you already have? That's how I feel when I have to replace a refrigerator or microwave--I'd rather buy something I don't have than have to replace something I already have. That's a big expense for you, so glad you already have so many beautiful dishes and accessories to play with! ;o) Luvs

I feel your pain...we had to do that about 6 years ago...ugh!! The grass is still fouled up where the old lines ran.

Karen, Luvs & Jaybird, thanks for your sympathy...it really does help to know others care or have been through it like you Jaybird. Luvs, you are SO RIGHT about replacing things...only I think worse than new appliances, etc is something like buying new tires but still that is not as bad as a new septic system when it comes to the cost!

At least, the worst is over now and they have put all the pumps, pipes, etc in. The backyard is a terrible mess so now, we have to fill one trench for the wiring, get some topsoil, plant grass and replace some cement pads where we had our Adirondack chairs, etc. (I'm glad we never had to move the little cabana) Knowing DH though, he will be right on it - he never rests that guy! I'm just glad he got the pro's in to do the drainage field instead of trying to do it himself!

Under the circumstances, DD, that is all good news. Your DH sounds great, and smart. LOL. Hang to that guy!
I'm so glad the cabana area was spared too.
I hope in light of what is happening to Iowa folks, something like this can be put in some perspective to make it easier to swallow the cost and hassle.

DD, I see you even have a chandy hanging in your cabana--very pretty/fancy. ;o) Did your cabana come with the glass panels? Is it secured to the wood deck so it can stay up all the time. I'm asking all these questions because my DS needs a shade structure in the back yard, but doesn't want to build a patio cover. This might work for them. Luvs

Luvs, here are a couple more pics of the cabana just after it was put up - didnt have chandeliere yet. DH built the wood platform which he put on some cement pads in the corners. He put landscape fabric under to keep grass from growing up into it. The rest of the structure is a ready-made "cabana" from Rona (not sure if you have in States) with wrought iron corners and leaded glass (which he secured to the wood) and the top is canvas. We just got it last summer and it survived last winter in which we had lots of snow and colder temps. He only took the canvas top off and left the rest up. The chandeliere is actually for candles although DH put power out there (with a cord along our clothesline) and we have little white lights at night. We were very happy with it and have had lots of gatherings there.

Prosperity - so nice to hear from you again and that you can commiserate with our bad weather! LOL!

That is beautiful.....I'm printing the pictures to take to DH...something like that would be so cool in our backyard. The little girls would LOVE it, so maybe Grandpa can be persuaded! :^)

Your cabana really is wonderful, I'm so glad it was spared when you had to tear up the yard. How are things going at getting back to normal? Know you want the mess gone asap, so hope you had a productive weekend. I think I'm staying indoors pretty much till Oct. LOL. This heat just does me in as I get older. 112 today, and of course its only going to go UP I'm sure in the next week or so. Ugh. I really hate not getting to be outside a lot tho. Trimmed one large bougainvillea and "melted" this morning. Too bad that's not in POUNDS, LOL. Years ago, at least it would cool off at night, but Phoenix so huge now its what they call a "Heat Island". All the concrete holds it in. Last night at 10:30, it was still 101. I keep telling myself to grin and bear it, especially as we have no floods or tornadoes or wildfires etc. So I've nothing to really complain about in that respect.

Karen, thank goodness we live in the age of air conditioning. Don't think I could have survived as a pioneer woman! It's "only" 93 here today, and too uncomfortable to suit me! I've just been in and out doing a few things outside today. During the summer, I try to do my yard early mornings or later in the evenings. In the middle of the day, I just flop on the couch with a book or movie and a cold drink! Not very productive I know. LOL

Luvs and Jaybird, I'm glad to be able to post pics which may be of some inspiration to others. I should have mentioned the wood platform is 10' x 10'.

Yes, Karen, DH got to work this wknd and removed a lot of the rocks and got a load of topsoil brought in and is slowly getting that spread around. Bit by bit, I'm sure the yard will get back to normal.

Our weather has smartened up a bit but is supposed to be short-lived with more rain predicted. I am glad we don't have your temperatures though...I don't like it that hot and we don't have air conditioning!
