Friday's Tip of the Day STINKS!
Comments (21)Speaking of wax paper. Did you ever do this project with kids. Take a hand held pencil sharpener and grate some crayon onto card stock paper. Put a piece of wax paper over it and iron it. You can cut it out in a fancy design like a heart or star and glue it onto a folded card stock paper. You get a very interesting designed card that way that is homemade. I have always used wax paper in the microwave especially to cover soup or anything that splatters. Comments (39)My husband works for the county prison and when the towels that the inmates use start to get holey, the county purchases new ones and throws the one ones away. My husband collects them before they go to trash and brings them home. (Garbage bags full) We rip them up and use them for rags for things like washing the car, washing windows, dusting, cleaning the grill etc. By the way, he does bring these from work but he has approval to bring them home instead of having them thrown away. As for me, I work at a hospital. Whenever we get a new patient, they get a welcome pack that includes a large water cup with a lid and anti-embolism stockings. A large amount of the patients don't even open the bags that they come in so when they get discharged, if the bags are still sealed, I take those two items home for use. (I ask my nurse manager first!) I give away a lot of those items to friends and family. The stockings are terrific and cost 10 to 15 bucks at the store....See MoreUsing more cloth towels and minimizing paper towel use
Comments (43)Kitchen towels are only in white and therefore you don't have to worry about anything matching or needing to bleach anything or using the "wrong" towel for anything. They're all the same. I buy cheap 100% cotton terry Doctor Joe automobile polishing towels and use them in the kitchen and garage. Once they get a bit stained from kitchen use, they become garage towels. If you buy in bulk cheaply and have plenty on hand, you won't be searching for one when you need it. Group some by the sink, and others by the prep area and yet others in the laundry area. Yes, I use them for cleaning up cat puke. The yuck goes down the toilet and the towel goes in the laundry with bleach. About 2 dozen is a good starting number for the average household. If you have a large household, then maybe double that. I use an old bucket that cat litter came in as the "hamper" in the pantry. If I'm doing a project that requires a lot of them and they're too many to just drape over the side and air out behind closed doors, I usually put them on a baking sheet and place them in the oven as it's cooling down. Use that "lost heat" for something! Do you want to talk about bottled water? We switched to a filter pitcher several years ago and bought a case of bottled water annually and just refilled the bottles as we drank the original water. But they were difficult to sanitize properly and after a recent bout with a nasty GI bug that the other half blamed on a water bottle, I received a dozen plain stainless steel water bottles as a holiday present. So far, they've been a lot easier to clean and fill and I'm really glad we switched....See MorePropagation of Streptocarpus between paper towels in ziploc bags
Comments (97)An interesting read, Mark. I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but I do have some clarifying Qs ... (See Rosie, you're not the only one who needs to ask "dumb Qs" heh j/k) When you say " I guess they don't list isopropanol (= isopropyl alcohol) but I think concentrations of 50% or more probably work. That's a guess. " , do you mean straight 50% isopropyl as purchased in a store or taking some proof of iso. and diluting it with water making a 50/50 solution? If the latter, what proof do you think might be sufficient? Are the paper towels initially dry with the leaves between them before you add the bleach solution? So your rinse entails pouring the sterilized water into the bag and swishing it around to try and remove the bleach? Hmm, wouldn't have expected that to be effective -- especially if the towels had been dry. Having absorbed the bleach solution into the fibers, would have thought it would be difficult to displace it with the rinses. I am quite frankly amazed the cuttings don't rot under such water logged conditions in the ziplock. Also surprised by the fact they can get enough light through the towels to fuel growth....See Morejannie
