prof range owners- how hot do your oven doors get?

Going back and forth on the range/wall oven question which has been vetted through this forum alot. If we do a range we're currently thinking a 48 capitol, american, or bluestar. Can anyone speak to how hot the oven doors get? Thinking of little ones in our future... Obviously supervision/ setting kitchen rules are the real/best/only way to keep safe from accidental burns but just trying to make a comprehensive list of pros/cons and this one just occured to me. thanks!

i have a 48" american range, the oven doors get warm at best. it also has the blue lights reminding you the burners, oven are on.it's a great cooking machine!

juliatallmadge, you might want to ask how hot the curb cover gets in these ranges, as well as the oven door. I don't know about the brands you asked about, but I have a 6 year old DCS. The oven door doesn't get particularly hot, but the curb cover (which is directly in front of the oven burner) gets hot enough to blister - stupidly, I touched it the first time I used the oven to bake & found out the hard way. I love the stove, but I make sure I don't touch the curb cover if the oven is on.

I'll be interested in hearing what others have to say & if pro stoves have improved since I bought mine.

I just ordered the basic RCS 36' it's going to take 3-4 weeks before I receive it so I can't say for sure that the heated door issue has been fixed, but I was told by several salespeople as well as a BS expert that the heat issue on the door has been addressed in the newer models. The doors now have double insulation, and you can see that on the double lined vents in the door. I'm really hoping that this is the case as I have a small child a hot oven door--no matter what oven--is a problem. I will update this if it turns out that the issue hasn't been addressed, but I trust what I have been told verbally and don't think I'll need to update this post.

It's a pretty simple task. You just remove the old orifices, check whether it is the one you expected, and if necessary install the correct new ones. I think the orifices are labelled with their respective opening sizes. But I am not 100% sure about that. You could ask your dealer if he has an LP conversion kit in stock and can take a look at the markings on the orifices; or maybe he can send you a copy of the instructions. You can ask a service technician to come out and remove the orifice for inspection. That would tell you whether the range was correctly converted. It's a really easy job, but the technician will probably still charge you about 30min of labor. You can also do it yourself, if you feel comfortable with this type of work. But you'll need an appropriate socket set. It's a little hard to reach otherwise. A wrench will most definitely not work, as I found out the hard way. When replacing the orifice, you want to make sure it's tight, but you don't want to overtighten it. I think, all of the orifices have the same size thread. So, it is also theoretically possible that somebody messed up and didn't match the correct size orifice with the corresponding size burner head. Maybe, they accidentally swapped orifice sizes around. Again, something that is easy to verify. All of the technology is super simple; any service technician can do the work, even if they are not specifically trained on Bluestar. But this is the reason why Bluestar recommends one of their trained technicians verifies everything is done correctly, when the stove gets delivered. Mistakes can happen. I never had to do the actual conversion on the model that you have, so I forgot whether you also need to change the orifice for the oven burner and/or the broiler. Also, I don't know if the gas pressure regular needs to be adjusted. That's commonly needed for most gas appliances. But if you end up buying the LP conversion kit, it would come with appropriate instructions.

Do you have proof for this accusation? Trevor Lawson of Eurostoves has this on his website under "test data" comparing the CC and BS now but most thinking people would not consider "data" provided by a competitor to be unbiased especially if you have any knowledge about how scientific testing is done. This becomes more evident as you look at how the other "tests" are set up and presented. There have been complaints on this forum about the door being hot on the BS. There have been some things written saying that BS fixed the hot door but a poster here that had an older one and a new one thought the new one had a hotter door. BlueStar review On the Wolf, it may depend on if you are talking about the AG or the DF. I think there have been a couple of complaints about the AG, but others who had it seemed to think there was something wrong with it. Maybe an actual owner will comment about the AG. I have the Wolf DF and the doors and surrounds stay very cool. We have grandkids(toddlers) running around and while I believe in teaching them to stay away from "hot" and they are watched closely, it is wonderful to have the peace of mind that a cool door is one less hazard. Even after running a couple of hours the door is cool and the only part even warm at all is at the bottom. I couldn't find any place even hot, let alone uncomfortably hot.

For those of you considering Thermador and are concerned about present day Performance, Reliability and Service, here is a Thermador customer experience that was recently posted elsewhere by Carl T... The authorized Thermador repair person just left my house after the second major problem with my 36" dual fuel range with grill (Model PD364GL). Some background: Like many of you, I did a major remodel of my home (completed two and a half years ago) and, after doing due diligence, I settled on the Thermador because I liked the design and the features and the fact that it got pretty good consumer ratings. Upon using the oven for the very first time I discovered that if I used the oven and grill at the same time the air from the oven fan would blow on the grill ignitor, causing the grill to continuously ignite. I assumed that it was a design flaw and when I called Thermador their representative confirmed my suspicions - with no offer of a solution. One year and one month after installing the stove (or, more precisely, one month after the warranty expired) I had a power outage in my neighborhood. When power was restored the master circuit board on my range blew out. One service call (and $400) later I was back in business. Kind of. After the repair was completed I noticed that the temperature gauge would automatically go to the designated temperature as opposed to the actual temperature in the oven itself. When I asked the service technician about this he told me that this was a new feature. I spoke to the Thermador service representative on the phone and he told me the same thing. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I KNOW what temperature I set the oven to, I need to know what the actual temperature is. My current situation is that I made the fatal mistake of using the self-cleaning feature for the first time six months ago. Right after using the self cleaning oven I noticed that the oven was not heating up to its designated temperature and that the problem was getting worse. Finally the oven quit heating at all. Diagnosis: the baking and the broiler elements are both burned out. I have since been told by a good friend and by the service representative that one should never use the self cleaning feature. Live and learn. The bottom line is that I would never ever buy a Thermador product again and I would strongly caution anyone against doing the same. The product design, manufacture and customer support are all very sub-standard. This is especially galling in light of how much the Thermador products cost. that's kind of scary for those of us with kids running around.

i'm interested in hearing about this as well, especially from anyone who has recently bought a bluestar. one of the knocks against bluestar is that the door gets hot. i'm wondering if they've worked this out or if that's still the case.

BlueStar has the lowest door skin temperature of any of the all gas pro ranges. The door skin on the lower part of the oven just above the toe kick is the hottest section. All all gas ranges have higher temp door skins than electric ovens. Remember pro gas ranges have 30,000 btu oven burners. How hot does a gas self cleaning range get on the outside

I have a DCS self-cleaning gas range and the oven door does not get very hot. I think self-cleaning ovens have more insulation. As far as the toe kick on the bottom, the front of it doesn't get very hot but the top of it does if you stick your finger in between the toe kick and the oven door - I don't do that anymore :-).

You know, I was wondering about that. When in store, I noticed that Bluestar has the shortest gasket around the door of any. If you look, it stops half way down each side. I looked at other unit and all had a longer graskets. The Viking was the best I think, where it completed the two sides and went part of the way around the bottom. The electrics, have gaskets all around so they are completely insulated. I suspect the gap is there to provide air flow but the heat then gets out that way. I wonder how much that contributes to efficiency or lack thereof

weissman, that's exactly the same place where I got singed - right in front of the fresh air intake for the oven burner. I've always been curious about how this passed residential safety requirements (not that I keep up with the codes) but it's probably no different from any other gas stove, pro range or otherwise.
