Microwave & burnt popcorn--- :(

Yep.... I did that.

And now I can't get the smell out of it even after a good soap cleaning. I even cooked a couple other things hoping the fan might delute the odor. No luck.

Is there something I can do to remove the smell without damaging the microwave?

Place a bowl of water in the microwave, bring it up to a boil, and let it boil for a while. Then open and air it out...

Slice a lemon into a deep bowl, fill halfway with water and microwave for five minutes (or longer if the water doesn't boil within a couple of minutes).

I personally have banned popcorn from the microwave...I HATE that smell!

What kind of surface are the marks on? Inside the oven or on the top? Glass? Plastic? What kind of bleach? It could be that where ever the marks are is burned and you will never be ablt to remove the marks....just like you can never remove a burned spot from wood. Linda C

If it is the Miele "microwave"..it is not Miele made (or even made in Germany. The Microwave is actually a Creda, re-badged as a Miele. Miele Speed Oven, which is a convection and microwave is Made by Miele in Germany! So, be mad at Creda. Damn English!! LOL

I frequently microwave basic popcorn for watching tv movies. All I do is put about 1/4 cup popcorn kernels in a pyrex bowl, add a few drops of water & lightly mix so the kernels are just barely wet-coated, cover & run it in the microwave for five & 1/2 minutes. We have an electric air-popper, but since coming up with this simple system, it's gathering dust up in the cupboard. Melt butter on the stove, pour & mix.

This just recently happened to me as well. It happened over one month ago, and the smell is finally gone. Ugh! Here are the things I tried: 1) Wipe down the interior of the microwave with acetone based nail polish remover. This worked great to get the yellow stains from the popcorn explosion out of the white surface. 2)Scrub interior with baking soda, then with white vinegar. 3) Fill a large bowl with water then cut up a lemon put the slices in the bowl with some dish soap. Boil the mixture in the microwave for several minutes. 4) Every day when you're not using the microwave keep a bowl of baking soda in it, dispose of it and use fresh every few days. This is seriously one of the hardest problems to deal with. I think to truly rid yourself of the smell, you may have to take the microwave apart to wipe down the interior fan, etc. Since Im getting rid of my micro when I remodel and I'll have a new one it wasnt worth it for me, but you might want to try the other things first then use that as a last resort. Good luck, and Im so sorry you have to deal with this in your new kitchen. Yukk!

Thanks both of you for your suggestions. Joe I tried the water and it helped but didn't take it away. Then I tried baking powder in the hot water and let it "cook" for about 10 minutes. Again it helped. At least it doesn't smell all the time but when I cook anything I can still smell the odor. Evaperconti, I don't have any lemon but will try that tomorrow when I can get to a store. I know lemon helps with drains, hopefully it will work on this too. My microwave is only 8 months old. I'd hate to have to replace it because of this!!!!!

Don't get rid of your microwave, remember the old saying "time heals old wounds". Well, time heals smells in the microwave. Give it a good cleaning and have patience - a lot of it...the smell will go away...eventually.

Try putting some activated charcoal in a shallow dish & leaving it in the micro. You can find activated charcoal over in the pet section/ aquarium supplies.

Popcorn is bad. But if you really want a long lasting stink, try drying out a wet newpaper! I left it in a little too long and it caught fire. HOW STUPID WAS THAT!! Two months and it still smells!
