Has anyone used Hydroshield Protective Glass Coating on glass?

We are having glass doors installed in our bathrooms. We have the option of putting a coating on the glass--hydroshield Protective Glass Coating--that protects the glass from getting cloudy/streaky over time.

Has anyone used this? Is it worth it? We don't have a whole house water filter, and I know our electric toothbrushes get pretty gucky. (not sure if that is the same cause or if the glass clouds from abrasive cleaners???)

I assume it is like the Armor product we used made by Cardinal. It is the best thing since sliced bread.:) Our GC has his guys do the initial treatment, and then my husband redid the shower walls before we used it for the first time. We have no shower door, but large glass walls separating the tub from the shower. We have each been using the shower twice a day for the past six months, and it still looks perfect. We just squeegee it off after every shower, and The Husband retreats it about once a month. We have really hard water here, but also have a water softener . If your product is anything like Armor you will love it.

No, its not something that you apply. It has to be applied in the shop where they make the glass. It is supposed to "fill" the natural microscopic holes of the glass to keep it cleaner.

I am a little wary of these things. I know after I got my coach scotch-gaurded, they discovered it was actually harder to clean and get the spots out. Now, stores like Crate and Barrel do not offer it.

Just has a similar ring in my ears. You have to pay extra for it and it is actually worse.

I'm interested in the same. A response from Bel Pre Glassworks (Rockville, Md): We have regular clear tempered glass or showerguard clear tempered glass. I used a product called Clean Shower and I don't squeegee, and I clean my shower maybe once a year. No mold, no mildew, no hard water deposits. It works for me. Spray and don't rinse. If you'd like you can Google it and read about how it works, and how the guy invented it. I've used it for about 10 years, with no hard water marks on my glass or ceramic tiles. Not for use on natural stone, but I can attest that it works for ceramic or porcelain). I realize that I sound like a commercial but I've been here on GW for a long time, and that is not my intent. This stuff works. There will be a film it leaves on the glass so it will not be crystal clear, but the water sheets off, and the shower dries quickly. Perhaps someone will give me a reason NOT to like it. It prevents the hard water from leaving deposits, and we have hard water. It is safe to use on treated surfaces. I made sure of that before our new shower was installed with Cardinal glass. It has Cardinal 10 protectant, (because that is what the designer spec'd) but it worked very well on our old 15 yr old un-protected framed glass. It also kept mildew from forming on the unsealed grout. I am married to a Marine (grunt) who doesn't squeegee or wipe after using the shower. This works for me. -Babka

Anyone use plate etched/backpainted glass for backsplash?

My countertop is soapstone. You CAN'T PRIME!!!! The glass is back painted, so the first layer is closest to the glass and what you end up seeing. If you prime first you will see primer and not paint! If I misunderstood what you meant I am sorry for the !!! but I just wanted to make that point. Anyway, I just used the latex wall color. My issue with sandblasted glass (I also have a sandblaster, although not one of the size needed to do this project, you'd need a booth and respirator) , is that the sandblasted surface picks up oils from your fingers and such that do not wipe off with windex, because they are in the micropitted surface of the glass. If you want something matte, you may want something else...I am not sure what.

Has anyone painted the inside of a glass vase?

My DD and I have painted the inside of glass ornaments as gifts. It is super easy, however I would be wary of using this method on a nice glass vase without a trial first. I can't recall where I found directions, but the steps were basic. We poured a small amount of 2-3 colors in alternating "stripes" into the ornaments, swirled around slowly for complete coverage, and then placed in a secure area (we used the ornament box) for 3 days. Each day we had to turn the ornament a 1/4 turn. It did take several days for the paint to dry completely so it would pool on the bottom, and that's why you do the daily 1/4 turn. We used regular acrylic craft paint that you can get in the little bottles at the craft store. The best ornaments - and they were stunning! - were those where we used closely related colors in a pearl finish, i.e. lavender, purple, and silver.

The way this product works is it fills the crevices in the glass surface. Magnified glass actually is full of non-visible cracks, and hills and valleys. The Hydrosheild fills in all those irregularities that you can't see and makes the surface smooth, which makes it easier to keep clean. Think of it this way: non-treated glass = cast iron skillet ... treated glass = Teflon coated skillet

Yes, we have all glass on our shower and we had it coated prior to the first use, it's been almost a year and our glass is like new. We use a squeegee Everytime we use it and clean it as suggested once a month. Love it.
